Does the Rear Bumper Need to be Modified on a 2004 Jeep Liberty Sport to Install the # 13044 Hitch

Updated 07/09/2010 | Published 07/08/2010

Question:

is the hitch exposed under the factory standard rear bumper of a jeep liberty sport 2004, or would i have to replace it with a bumper that would allow access to the hitch?

We have an installation video showing the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch, item # 13044, being installed on a 2006 Jeep Liberty for you to review. About 1/2 way through the video you will see the hitch raised into place and exactly how it fits below the rear fascia on the Liberty. You will not need to remove or replace the rear fascia or bumper to install this hitch.

This hitch installs into existing weld nuts and does not require modification of the vehicle. One installation tip I can give you is to make sure and clean the weld nuts thoroughly before attempting to install the new hitch mounting bolts, see video. We use the round end of a Battery Post and Terminal Cleaner - Wire Brush, item # DW00254, and a spray lubricant like the LubriMagic Green Series Biobased Spray Lubricant and Penetrant.
