Question:

I dont get the same info from anyone that has given me an estimate to install my base plate and wiring. I would feel better doing it myself with your assistance. Here is what I have: 2014 Ford Edge 3.5 no eco, no adaptive cruise Brake Buddy classic digital Brake buddy alert system Blue ox towbar bx7445 Portable magnetic lights 4 prong outlet on M/H 6 pin to 7 pin cable 5ft Heres what think I need or think I need: Roadmaster base plate blue ox tabs are 26.5high a new brake buddy breakaway switch Roadmaster base plate adapters to Blue ox tow bar Battery maintainer? Light diode kit? 6 pin and 7 pin connections on Edge and M/H 12 volts from front of motor home to rear of M/H Will I need to install a battery maintainer on my Edge? I will be using a brake buddy classic and I am concerned about the dead battery issues that I have been reading about. Some installer was telling me about check engine lights can go on and create computer issues recommended a fuse bypass. No need to pull fuse according to owners manual No one seems to agree on installation and that make me concerned. I would rather install myself and know what I have. I considered just using portable magnetic brake lights plugged into rv 4 prong connector on the Edge while towing. Would this create or eliminate any battery issues or is it the AUx mode while towing that kills the battery? I am pretty good with electrical wiring as long as I have a decent schematic. Mechanical knowledge is fairly good too. Thank your for your help

According to my contact at Hopkins Manufacturing, the # HM20010 break away switch you referenced would be a good choice to replace your damaged breakaway switch.

For a Roadmaster base plate kit you would need the part # 4408-1 which has been confirmed as a fit for your 2014 Ford Edge. I attached an install video for you to check out as well. For an adapter you would want the part # BX88178 to adapt the base plate to your Blue Ox tow bar.

For a diode kit you would want the part # RM-152. You will also want the # BX88206 to connect this lighting solution to your tow vehicle. This comes with a round 6-way connector that you will install on the front of your towed vehicle and enough coiled wire to go from there to the RV.

To convert the 4-way connector at the rear of your Motorhome to a 7-way will require the # ETBC7. This comes with wire to run the 12 volt power wire, but most likely you will need longer 10 gauge wire like part # 10-1-1 which is sold by the foot.

I checked with Roadmaster and they state that your vehicle is not known to drain the vehicle battery when being flat towed so you wouldn't need to have a maintenance charge on the battery.

We do not carry the brake buddy system so we aren't aware of the battery drain issue you described, but it would not be alleviated by using magnetic tow lights as the diode kit does not get powered by the vehicle battery. Instead it's the motorhome battery.
