Question:

What is needed to mount a Thule Hullavator 898 Pro onto a 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser with a factory roof rack? I read somewhere that it can be mounted to factory crossbars, but the do not extend beyond the side rails on the FJ cruiser.

I will be happy to help you out. The Thule Hullavator kayak carrier, # TH898, needs to be mounted on crossbars that extend beyond the side rails or foot pack. It will not fit any other way. So to add compatible crossbars to your 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser that has factory crossbars you can use the Thule rack using parts # TH712400 and # TH710401.

These bars mount to the side rails and also include locks to deter theft. Enough of the bars will be sticking out each end to use the Hullavator.

Another option is instead of using the Hullavator with a new roof rack you could use the Malone DownLoader # MPG114MD with the Telos load assist # MPG351XL. This combination will also provide a load assist feature for loading/unloading the kayak. It is rated for 75 pounds.
