Trailer Hitch to Allow Class A Motor Home to Pull 2008 Toyota Sienna on Tow Dolly

Published 11/27/2015

Question:

Hi! We are new to RVing and towing. We have a Class A motorhome that is rated to tow enough weight, but the trailer hitch says its rated for 3500lbs with a tongue weight of 350lbs. I believe it has a 2x2inch opening. We have a 2008 Toyota Sienna and a 600lb tow dolly. All together that puts the tow weight at around 4600#. Our tow dolly has surge brakes. If we used a weight distribution system, would we be able to tow what we need to with our current hitch?

It is not possible to use a weight distribution (WD) system along with a tow dolly such as the Roadmaster # RM-2050-1. In cases like yours where the various components in a towing system (the Class A motor home and the hitch installed on it) have different weight capacities, then the lower-rated item determines the overall limit. Even though your MH can handle the towed weight of the Sienna and the tow dolly, the 3500-lb-rated hitch simply cannot. A weight distribution system will not help in your application.

We do offer some RV hitches that are rated to 5000-lbs towing weight. These three 2-inch hitches can be seen using the link provided. They differ in the RV frame widths with which they are compatible. Curt # C13701 fits widths from 18- to 51-inches and carries 500-lb tongue weight and 5000-lbs gross towing weight capacities and can be bolted on using the included hardware.
