Can this heater be hooked up to run off of propane fuel cylinders available in most retail hardware stores?

Yes, if the propane tank and its regulator are rated for low-pressure operations (many gas appliances are) then it will work with the Camco propane heater # CAM57331.
If you have a propane tank but no low pressure regulator you could use regulator # CAM57703.
