Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2014 Ford Explorer
Published 09/17/2015 >
Question:
I want to install a hitch in a Ford Explorer 2014 basically to install a Thule bike rack I will also need the extra ball kit. I see that your products are installed at a lower height than the Ford OEM alternative. Which height is better? Why the difference? Thanks!

I can't speak as to why the factory Ford hitch is installed where it is but as far as aftermarket trailer hitches the manufactures determine the best places to attach a hitch and that is why they install where they do on your 2014 Ford Explorer.
I wouldn't say that one height is better than another on a vehicle that is already fairly high off the ground. Its a bigger concern on vehicles low to the ground like mini vans.
If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.
If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, use the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.
And to add a 4-Way trailer connector you can use # 118540. I have linked videos showing how the hitch and wiring install for you.
