Question:
I would like to install a backup camera for a 2007 GMC Sierra HD 3500 dually. I use the truck to tow my fifth wheel trailer. There is a TPMS Tire Pressure Monitoring System on both my truck and trailer. I would like to keep the number of new holes drilled to a minimum. My questions are: 1 What are the advantages and disadvantages of a wireless versus a wired system? 2 Would the radio frequency for the wireless backup camera interfere with my TPMS? 3 Would the camera position be better on the left side of a tail gate handle as usually installed OEM or on the license plate? 4 I don’t need the backup camera when hitching the truck to the fifth wheel. Can I turn off the monitor and beeping noise if so equipped? 5 What brands would you recommend? Thanks

Wireless backup camera systems like the Swift Hitch # 04928 can offer easier installation than wired systems such as the Hopkins Smart Hitch # HM50002. But any wireless device can potentially interfere with other similar items such as a tire pressure monitor. The various manufacturers do not test their products with those from the others so there is no way to absolutely guarantee that they will work simultaneously without interaction.
The wired Hopkins system # HM50002 uses a license plate mount and so requires no drilling. Wiring is simply a matter of plugging in the included T-connector harness at the back of your truck's 7-way and routing the included wire up to the in-cab monitor. A 25-foot extension # HM3100504061 is available.
You can certainly unplug the monitor when you are not in need of the system to reduce distractions.
