Question:

We have a 2013 Dodge Durango 6200 lb tow capacity and are in the middle of buying a TT that has a dry weight of 4300 lbs. We anticipate having an additional 500-600 lbs of weight with fresh water and supplies, but just arent sure what size weight distribution system to purchase for our application? Should we be looking at a system rated for somewhere around 6000 lbs trailer weight capacity and 500-600lbs of TW?

Expert Reply:

To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

For a trailer weighing around 4,900 pounds when loaded and ready to tow the tongue weight should be around 490 to 735 pounds (10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight). Based on this a system that is rated for 500 to 1000 pounds, # RP66559, would be the way to go.

The included shank has a max rise of 8-3/4 inches and max drop of 4 inches. Other shanks are available separately if more rise or drop is needed. For a 2-5/16 inch ball use # 19286. I have included some helpful links on weight distribution and determining tongue weight for you.
