The problem is that the ball holes of ball mounts for a 1-1/4 inch hitch are all 3/4 inch in diameter and thd 2-5/16 inch balls are all for 1 inch diameters and up. The reason for this is that trailers that call for that big of a ball are going to be too heavy for a 1-1/4 inch hitch.
The only solution I would have for you would be to upgrade to a 2 inch hitch like the part # 75132 so that you can go with a ball mount that will accommodate a 2-5/16 inch ball on your 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. This hitch will fit underneath your factory hitch.
The recommended ball mount is the part # AMSC2. For a 2-5/16 inch ball you would want the part # C40007.
If the ball mount kit does not include a ball mount with the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, check out the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.
