Recommended Tire Size for Utility Trailer Carrying Golf Cart Behind Motorhome

Question:

What is the best tire size on a utility trailer with a golf cart that is to be towed by a Class A motorhome with 22inch tires at highway speeds of 65-70mph? Can a trailer with 10inch tires be converted to 15 or 16inch tires?

On the trailer, you should have a sticker or plate that lists the GVWR and the tire size recommended by the trailer manufacturer. Using that size would be your best bet.

You want to see about 4 to 4-1/2 inches of clearance between the top of the tire and underside of the fender when the trailer is unloaded. Going with a larger tire size might mean you'll have to relocate or even replace the trailer fenders.

Fender clearance aside, going from a 10 inch wheel to a 15 inch wheel isn't necessarily a horrible idea, but if your current wheels have a 4 lug on 4 inch bolt circle, we don't offer a 14 inch wheel with that bolt pattern. A 13 inch wheel would be the largest available with that bolt pattern.

If your current wheels use a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern, there are 15 inch wheel/tire combos available.

You'll want to choose tires whose combined weight capacity are equal to or greater than the trailer's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (maximum weight of trailer + contents.)

Most trailer tires have a maximum speed rating of 65 mph. Exceeding that speed causes the tires to heat up. Excessive heat causes premature tire wear.
