Is There A Difference In Weight Capacity On Brake Mounting Flanges

Updated 05/22/2015 | Published 05/21/2015

Question:

I have a haulmark 44 ft 5th wheel custom built trailer ...half living quarters, half cargo area that carries alot of weight. It has 3 7000 lb axles with hydralic brakes. I was told when i needed replacement backing plates that 5200 and 7000 lb have no difference. I dont believe that so can u tell me the difference between the two and how to tell what i have on my trailer already please?

Thanks for providing the photo. That really helps when we are trying to provide information for customers.

It looks like you have a 5-bolt brake system. We offer one 5-bolt brake mounting flange, part # 4-44-1. It is designed for 3 inch axles that range from 3,500 to 7,200 lb axles. These brake flanges are welded in place, so if you are going to replace them you will want to have the work done by a certified professional. These need to be concentric and square or the brakes will not wear evenly.

If you can find numbers and the manufacturer of the brakes you currently have I may be able to tell you what size brakes you have installed, but since you said it is a custom built trailer I am unable to tell you what size brake assemblies you have.

I am unable to find any information that describes the difference between 5,200 and 7,000 lb brakes that would be easy to identify since they are so similar in size and features. If you can find the bearing and race and seal numbers in your hub, we can find the replacement parts for you. I have attached a photo that shows where the numbers can be found. If you are unable to find the numbers you can use a digital caliper and measure the spindle at the locations where the bearings and seal sit.
