Video Transcript for Redline Trailer Brakes 4-44-1 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at a brake mounting flange for a 3" round axle. The brake mounting flange gets welded to the spindle at the end of the axle to provide secure mounting plates for brake assemblies. This flange works with a 12" diameter brake assembly. It's going to come with the bolts already pressed in you can see that it's a five-bolt mount. The bolt pattern is 5 on 3-7/8", so that means that we have five bolts, and then from the center of this one to the center of this one, as well as this one to this one, it's going to measure 3-7/8". Center on center between these two is going to be 3". This is designed to fit 3" diameter axles. The bolt diameter is 3/8", so this will work with 4.400 lb, 6,000 lb regular duty, 6,000 lb heavy duty, 7,000 lb and 7,200 lb axles.

The diameter of the pilot hole, so the hole right here at the center, that's going to measure 2-3/4" in diameter. The flange itself is made from a durable steel construction, it's going to measure 1/4" thick. Taking a look at the overall measurements. Going side to side, it's going to measure about 4-1/2". Going this direction, that's going to give us a measurement of about 4-3/16". That's going to do it for today's look at the brake mounting flange for a 3" round axle.

It is a flange for a 3” round axle. It is to be welded onto the axle. Unfortunately, the inside diameter is ONLY 2.75 “. It will not fit directly onto the axle unless you do some serious grinding. It is possible that I do not know how it should be attached but.... 897440

Thank you for your review. The brake flange is designed to fit onto the spindle just behind the seals not on the 3 axle.

I am putting on electric brakes on Mobile home axles and needed a way to mount the new backing plates. This seems to be the way to get it done. I had great help from Greg S on how to go about it. 824828

Bolts like up perfectly. The center hole needs to be bored out to be used on mobile home axles. They can also be a challenge to weld square to the tube. 777418

I've been restoring a 1979 Hudson trailer on which the brake backing plates were welded right to the axles. That makes rebuilding the brake system impossible unless you cut off the exiting material and install these flanges. This is pretty much the only way to do it. These flanges are stout -- 3/16" plate, laser cut for precision. If you install them properly you won't have to worry about the flanges failing. These brake flanges have to be absolutely square and concentric on the axle, and the0y need to be at the proper depth relative to the spindle. I think the best way to get it right is to dry-fit everything and then jig the flanges and the brake backing plates in position with magnets or a similar means. When everything is in alignment, tack weld the flanges to the axles, then take all the other parts off and finish your welds. 633997

High quality and well made. Made to fit the spindle of a 3" Axle. It fit, but the brakes would have been so far out on the axle that the hub would not even bolt on. Glad I checked before welding. Further investigation found that I have a shorter than average spindle length. THESE MOUNTING FLANGES WOULD NOT WORK FOR ME AND WERE RETURNED! Mobile home axles usually come in two "basic" sizes. The "smaller" size spindle, with the 1.9" grease seal and or 1-3/8" inner bearing (the larger spindle "usually" has a 2.25" grease seal and 1-3/4" inner bearing) If you have the Larger axle, with the 1-3/4" inner bearing and larger grease seal then this mounting flange should work. I had the 1.9" Grease Seal and therefore a shorter spindle length, so I had to weld the brake backing plate directly to the 3" axle tube. THESE MOUNTING FLANGES WOULD NOT WORK FOR ME AND WERE RETURNED! I put the brake assembly on the axle, reinstalled hub and bearings then tightened down. Next, put the brake assembly in the hub and adjust brakes tight to the drum while keeping both concentric. When both are tight together make sure brake adjusting holes are at bottom towards the ground and weld brake backing plate to the axle. 394518

Careful if you get this product. I specified for a 3" tube. What I got was ID 2.754". Thankfully I have a lathe and was able to bore it out to size. Would be nice if the parts room checked the sizes before they send instead of grabbing what was on the shelf. 51742

The part you received is correct. The flange is for use on 3 inch axles, but it does not mount to the axle. The spindles on 3 inch axles measure 2.75 on the shoulder where the flange should be welded. It should be mounted to the shoulder of the spindle right next to where the spindle is welded to the axle.

Ask the Experts about this Redline Accessories and Parts

  • Where to Mount the Brake Mounting Flange 4-44-1
I can see how that would throw you off. The Brake Mounting Flange for 3" Round Axle part # 4-44-1 is designed to mount onto the spindle just behind the seals it doesn't sit all the way inboard so it's not around the entire axle. I've included a picture to show you what I mean.

  • How To Choose The Correct Brake Mounting Flange For Your Trailer Axle
Absolutely, in order to install a 5 bolt brake mounting flange, you will need the Brake Mounting Flange for 3" Round Axle part # 4-44-1. This brake flange bracket is designed to work with an axle diameter of 3". If your axle is smaller than this, or you want a 4 hole mounting flange. You will need the Brake Mounting Flange part # 4-35 for a 2-3/8" axle and the Trailer Brake Mounting Flange part # 4-50 for 3-1/2" axle diameters. I recommend having a professional welder perform this...

  • Recommended Brake Mounting Flange To Welded On Brake Assemblies
Thanks for the picture. Those assemblies look pretty rough and definitely need to be completely replaced, but are unlike anything I've seen. It looks like it was a custom job. I recommend removing them completely and having a professional welder add the Brake Mounting Flange for 3" Round Axle # 4-44-1 to your axle. This will need to be welded in place but will give you up to date braking assembly options that can be adjusted, and parts replaced as needed. I recommend the Electric Trailer...

  • Bolt Pattern of 5 Bolt Brake Mounting Flange for Trailer Brakes
The bolt pattern for a 5 bolt brake mounting flange, like # 4-44-1 is 5 on 3-7/8 inches. What that means is it measures 3-7/8 inches from one corner to its diagonal counterpart. From hole to hole across the bottom is 3 inches and between the others is about 2-1/8 inches. I've made a diagram that may help.

  • Parts to Convert From Electric Brakes to Electric Over Hydraulic Disc Brakes on 6,000 lb Axle
Thank you for all that detailed information, it is exactly what we need to get you set up with brakes so you can keep your family safe like you mentioned! You initially said you wanted to switch over from drum to disc brakes, but in your question you referenced an electric over hydraulic actuator and brake controller, so it sounds like you want to switch to electric over hydraulic (EoH) disc brakes for the best braking possible. The brake flange that you referenced, # 4-44-1, can be welded on 3 inch axles. The brake flange will allow brake assemblies with a bolt pattern of 5 on 3-7/8 of an inch to be mounted. The brake flange will work with 7,000 and 7,200 lbs axles. If you are looking for brake assemblies to mount to the flanges, then I recommend the trailer brake assembly # AKEBRK-7L-SA left side and # AKEBRK-7R-SA right side. Our 5 bolt mounting flange, # 4-44-1, will fit 3" round axles and fits with 12" brake assemblies like # 23-105 for the left side and # 23-106 for the right side. We recommend having brake mounting flanges installed by trailer building professionals, that have a jig to hold the brake mounting flange square and concentric to the spindle, for proper braking performance.

  • Is a Gap Between a Trailer Brake Backing Plate and Drum Normal
The slight gap you see is normal. The drum is not supposed to make contact with the brake mounting plate. There are some instances when mixing brands of brakes, hubs, and axles, that won't line up properly but in this case it is normal. I did also run it by another set of eyes just to make sure and we both came to the same conclusion.

  • How to Determine the Capacity of 2 Inch Square Axle
Square axles can be tough to determine capacity since the same spindle can typically fit a range of axle capacities. With this being said the absolute best way to determine the capacity of your axle is to locate a plate/sticker on the axle itself or on the trailer. If this is not available we can take a few steps to try and narrow it down for you. 1) A 2 inch square axle using a 5 on 3-7/8 inch brake mounting flange is typical of 5,200, 6,000, and 7,000 lb axles. On the Redline Brake Mounting Flange, part # 4-44-1, the five bolts are press fit into the flange. To be removed they would have to be pressed out with a hydraulic press. Once they are pressed out the bolts are not to be used again. So you would not want to remove the bolts from the flange. The flange needs to be welded on concentric and square. It sounds to me like your trailer uses a brake mounting flange like part # 4-44-1. This has a bolt pattern of 5 on 3-7/8 inch and is used with 3 inch axles.
