Today we're going to be taking a look at a brake mounting flange for a 3" round axle. The brake mounting flange gets welded to the spindle at the end of the axle to provide secure mounting plates for brake assemblies. This flange works with a 12" diameter brake assembly. It's going to come with the bolts already pressed in you can see that it's a five-bolt mount. The bolt pattern is 5 on 3-7/8", so that means that we have five bolts, and then from the center of this one to the center of this one, as well as this one to this one, it's going to measure 3-7/8". Center on center between these two is going to be 3". This is designed to fit 3" diameter axles. The bolt diameter is 3/8", so this will work with 4.400 lb, 6,000 lb regular duty, 6,000 lb heavy duty, 7,000 lb and 7,200 lb axles.
The diameter of the pilot hole, so the hole right here at the center, that's going to measure 2-3/4" in diameter. The flange itself is made from a durable steel construction, it's going to measure 1/4" thick. Taking a look at the overall measurements. Going side to side, it's going to measure about 4-1/2". Going this direction, that's going to give us a measurement of about 4-3/16". That's going to do it for today's look at the brake mounting flange for a 3" round axle.

Careful if you get this product. I specified for a 3" tube. What I got was ID 2.754". Thankfully I have a lathe and was able to bore it out to size.
Would be nice if the parts room checked the sizes before they send instead of grabbing what was on the shelf.
This is an exelent flange if you want to convert an axel that is not allredy a breaking axel it worked great for me
I had to machine the parts so they fit my application of older mobile home axles.
High quality and well made. Made to fit the spindle of a 3" Axle. It fit, but the brakes would have been so far out on the axle that the hub would not even bolt on. Glad I checked before welding. Further investigation found that I have a shorter than average spindle length.
THESE MOUNTING FLANGES WOULD NOT WORK FOR ME AND WERE RETURNED!
Mobile home axles usually come in two "basic" sizes. The "smaller" size spindle, with the 1.9" grease seal and or 1-3/8" inner bearing (the larger spindle "usually" has a 2.25" grease seal and 1-3/4" inner bearing)
If you have the Larger axle, with the 1-3/4" inner bearing and larger grease seal then this mounting flange should work.
I had the 1.9" Grease Seal and therefore a shorter spindle length, so I had to weld the brake backing plate directly to the 3" axle tube.
THESE MOUNTING FLANGES WOULD NOT WORK FOR ME AND WERE RETURNED!
I put the brake assembly on the axle, reinstalled hub and bearings then tightened down. Next, put the brake assembly in the hub and adjust brakes tight to the drum while keeping both concentric. When both are tight together make sure brake adjusting holes are at bottom towards the ground and weld brake backing plate to the axle.
I've been restoring a 1979 Hudson trailer on which the brake backing plates were welded right to the axles. That makes rebuilding the brake system impossible unless you cut off the exiting material and install these flanges. This is pretty much the only way to do it.
These flanges are stout -- 3/16" plate, laser cut for precision. If you install them properly you won't have to worry about the flanges failing.
These brake flanges have to be absolutely square and concentric on the axle, and the0y need to be at the proper depth relative to the spindle. I think the best way to get it right is to dry-fit everything and then jig the flanges and the brake backing plates in position with magnets or a similar means. When everything is in alignment, tack weld the flanges to the axles, then take all the other parts off and finish your welds.
It is a flange for a 3” round axle. It is to be welded onto the axle. Unfortunately, the inside diameter is ONLY 2.75 “. It will not fit directly onto the axle unless you do some serious grinding. It is possible that I do not know how it should be attached but....

Thank you for your review. The brake flange is designed to fit onto the spindle just behind the seals not on the 3 axle.
I am putting on electric brakes on Mobile home axles and needed a way to mount the new backing plates. This seems to be the way to get it done. I had great help from Greg S on how to go about it.
Bolts like up perfectly. The center hole needs to be bored out to be used on mobile home axles.
They can also be a challenge to weld square to the tube.
Upon inspection if receiving my recent order I noticed that the packaging was sub par at best. The box didn't seem to be visually damaged externally, however the inside told a different story I ordered 2 sets of electronic brakes. Some hardware and a tub of packing grease. If you see the pictures attached, everything was thrown into a massive box without proper packing material and some of the items show signs of shipping damage. Some brakes were out of alignment and the grease canister was smashed almost to the point or rupture. For such a big company I would expect a little more care to be given to the several hundred dollars worth of parts in my order.

The part you received is correct. The flange is for use on 3 inch axles, but it does not mount to the axle. The spindles on 3 inch axles measure 2.75 on the shoulder where the flange should be welded. It should be mounted to the shoulder of the spindle right next to where the spindle is welded to the axle.
