Question:
Can i use a battery and connect it to the trailer wiring to check the lights without connecting the truck to the trailer or use a battery charger to do the same.

Yes you can use a 12V battery to test the lights. Connect the negative terminal on the battery to the trailer frame to complete the ground portion of the circuit. Then use a wire jumper to or circuit tester, like part # PTW2993, to bridge from the individual contacts on the trailer connector to the positive terminal of the battery.
