Can I mount the horizontal track on the side walls instead? If so, with what type of hardware should I use, self tapping screws?

The Erickson E-Track is very versatile so they isn't a specific size or model for your 5 x 8 Haulmark Transport Deluxe Cargo Trailer, just install as much or as little as you want, on the deck or on the wall. I have included a link to all of the E-Track tracks, as well as the accessories, for you.

If this were my trailer, in order to accommodate a variety of different loads, I would install 2 of the 5 ft Long Horizontal E-Track, # E19148, on the deck of the trailer and 4 of the 4 ft Vertical E-Track, # E19146, on the walls(2 on each side). All and all it really is going to depend on what you plan to carry in the trailer.

Yes, the horizontal track can be mounted on the side walls of your cargo trailer. I have attached a photo that was submitted by one of our customers which has done just that. I do recommend securing the E-track to as many frame supports as possible for the most support/stability. You will just want to use hardware that is appropriate for whatever type of material that you are attaching the E-Track to. This can be purchased at any local hardware store.

I went out to the warehouse and did some measuring to assist. The mounts will be 39-3/4 inches from outside to outside, so the 52 inch fairing #TH22WV will work for your application. I've attached a photo and video to further assist.
