Recommended 5-Way Connectors For Vehicle And Trailer

Updated 03/31/2015 | Published 03/29/2015

Question:

I own a 17foot Montauk on a Lil Rider trailer. The trailer has LED tail lights. I understand that my 2004 Honda Element is 5 wire. My current setup presents a flat 4 wire from 5 wire connection. I am not satisfied with the flat connector as it is exposed to the weather, occasionally drags and now from dragging it is in need of replacement. I would like to convert to a housed connection unit in which I can just plug in my trailer. I want to eliminate the flat connector that comes out of my vehicle. Can you recommend parts and schematic to make this happen? thank you

The vehicle side connector I recommend is the Pollak 5-Pole, Round Pin Trailer Wiring Socket, part # PK11502. Check out the product review video I have attached. You may want to take a look at the mounting bracket for the connector, part # RM-910030-5.

For the trailer side I recommend part # PK11501. You can take a look at the attached product review video for this connector.

I have also attached a helpful article that explains trailer wiring and has some diagrams and photos of how the wires should be run for both the vehicle and the trailer side. I recommend using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to test the wires when attaching them to connectors.
