Does Using a Reducer Sleeve that Overhangs a 2-1/2 Inch Trailer Hitch Reduce the Towing Capacity

Updated 03/31/2015 | Published 03/29/2015

Question:

Is it ok for the reducer sleeve to protrude past the length of the hitch receiver by about 1 inch when towing a 7000 lb travel trailer? Does a sleeve reduce towing capacity if there is overhang?

Expert Reply:

It is normal to see some overhang when using a reducer sleeve such as # C45405. The # 45054 has a lip that prevents it from going all the way into the receiver, making it easy to remove. A reducer sleeve should not reduce the tongue weight or towing capacity of the hitch. However, if your trailer hitch is a factory hitch check the owner's manual of the vehicle to determine if there are any special provisions mentioning a reducer sleeve.
