I went to our warehouse and pulled a Yakima FrontLoader Wheel Mount Bike Carrier, part # Y02103 to get the measurement you asked about.

I have attached a photo of the front mount that has the width noted. It is 7 inches wide outside edge to outside edge. This will attach to most round, square or factory crossbars. When using this carrier the front wheel does not have to be removed. This carrier will hold one bike with wheels from 20 to 29 inches. it will not work with recumbent or tandem bikes, and your crossbar spread must be between 16 and 48 inches.
