When replacing gas shock on your vehicle or RV, you will want to make sure you are buying a replacement with the exact same extended length, compressed length, and pounds of force. This information is usually printed on the shock. Lengths are measured from the center of the ball joint used for mounting. If you are planning on installing gas shocks on something for the first time, identifying the shock you need requires fairly complex initial calculations, so be sure to do your research to avoid purchasing a shock that will not fit your application.

Video Transcript for Gas Shock: The Breakdown

Jeff: Hello everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today. We're taking a look at this JR Products, 20 inch long gas shock. Now this is a quick and easy replacement for any worn or broken gas shock you may have. This will replace a gas shock on multiple applications like your RV or trailer doors, storage compartment doors, truck, bed covers, or fold down camper beds.It is designed with the nice high quality black nitride shaft includes the plastic ends with the locking clips to secure it to the mounting ball and the connection type one.

This is a 10 millimeter ball socket. It does easily install in minutes. There's no special tools required. Basically what I want to do is zoom in a little bit here, just so we can show you detail. Here's the ends of it.

And basically what you end up doing to get your old one off, you'll just slide a small flat tip screwdriver under the clip, pry that clip up and it'll release the pressure and you can pull it off the ball. And then when you go to install this one, just go ahead and pry that clip up. You don't have to pop the clip off, just pry it up enough to release the pressure in there, and then put that onto the ball, push your clip down and it'll attach just like that. And you'll do the same on the other end, just like that. Very simple installation. Now, when you do install this, they do want the inner rod facing down and then they also recommend to replace these gas shocks in pairs.

Now the extended length on this, it's extended like it is now from the center of the small socket to the center of this one is going to be right at 20 inches. That compressed length, if you would compress it, it would be 11.41 inches. And the output force on this gas shock is 10 pounds. But that should do it for the review on this Jr Products, 20 inch long gas shock.

  • Recommended RV Entry Door Gas Strut For A Thor Class C Motorhome
A typical RV entry door gas strut ranges from 10-20lbs in pressure. We carry both a 10lbs # 372-5300-10 and 20lbs # 372-5300-20 that you can use. Really it just comes down to preference and the climate. If you're in a windy climate going heavier will help prevent the door from flying open/closed in the wind.

  • How to Choose Replacement Gas Shock for Entry Door on RV
Hey Shyanne, thanks for reaching out again! The best way to replace the gas spring on your entry door is to look for any identifying markers on your current gas spring and try to match it with what you have. For example, the Gas Shock # 372-5300-10 is rated for 10 lb of Force and measures 20" Extended and 11.41" Compressed. These measurements are taken from the center of one ball socket to the center of the other ball socket so you can compare that to what you have. Let me know what...

  • Recommended Gas Strut for a 2013 Columbus 320RS 5th Wheel
I don't know for sure, Mark, but if you're needing a 20" extended strut and it uses a 10mm ball socket, the Gas Shock # 372-5300-10 will work.

  • Recommended Replacement Struts for Storage Compartments
Unless the force is specifically listed on your current strut, it is unlikely that you will be able to find the exact pressure. There is no standard for the numbers printed on them. For storage compartments, I would recommend a strut with 10-20 lbs of force like the Gas Shock - 10 lb Force - 20" Extended, 11.41" Compressed - Black Nitride # 372-5300-10 or Gas Shock - 20 lb Force # 372-5300-20. You will want to measure the length in order to find the right size. I have attached two different...

  • Parts Needed to Add Gas Strut to RV Entry Door
For an RV door you'd need a strut like the part # 372-5300-10 which has a 10 lb strength and then to mount it you'd need the mounting bracket kit part # 372BR-1020 for a flat bracket or the part # 372BR-1015 for a set with angled mounts. We don't have an install video for this for you to check out at this time.
