Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario. Technical Support

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Dodge Journey - Draw-Tite

Speaker 1: Today, on our 2006 Dodge Journey, we're gonna be installing Draw Tite's class three two inch trailer hitch receiver. Part number 76225. As you can see, the cross tube is completely hidden behind the bumper, so you're only gonna be able to see the receiver tube sticking out the back. It's a class three two inch by two inch receiver, so this is gonna ne great for all your needs, from towing trailers, to bike racks, this will do it all. It's got hoop style safety chain loops that are located on the bottom. It's got a nice wide opening. And there's spin enough that it'll accommodate all safety chains, from the very large, to the very small.

I use the five eighths inch hitch pin. One doesn't come included, but you can pick one up here at with part number PC3. It features a 525 ton weight, that's the force going down on top of the receiver. And a 3,500 pound gross towing capacity. And that's how much you can pull behind it.Now, you do want to verify with your vehicle's owner's manual to ensure that you're not going to exceed its towing capacities.

Now I've got some measurements for you to help you when deciding on accessories. From the ground to top inside edge of the receiving tube imagine it's about 16 1/2 inches. This is important when deciding if you need a drop rise or a raise shank on any of your accessories. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the rear bumper, it measures about 1 1/2 inches. This is important when determining if any of your folding accessories can be placed in the upright storage position without contacting the bumper. We'll begin our installation in the wheel well.

We're on our passenger's side. We're gonna drill out the three plastic rivets that hold our rear inaudible 00:01:25 on. We're gonna use a five 20 seconds drill to do this. So just drill out the center. Do that for each rivet. If they're still in there, you can use a screwdriver to pry them out.

Then, by our passenger's side taillight, there's two more rivets that we'll need to drill out as well. Once you've got all the rivets removed, you'll repeat that same process on your driver's side. Now pop out your inner fender minor. Just pull that aside and that'll expose a seven millimeter head bolt that we'll need to remove there with our seven millimeter socket. Now use a flat bladed screwdriver, or a trim pad remover tool. And we're gonna remove the four pins along the topside of our bumper back underneath our weather stripping. They'll pry out the center first, and then you can just pull the pin out. We can now remove our inaudible 00:02:45. We're gonna do this starting at the wheel well and just work the panel out all the way around towards our taillight. Continue working it out. And, once you get this side out, I like to just tuck this one side back up there to hold it in place, and I'll do the same thing on the other side.Once you've got your other side popped out, grab it from the bottom and just lift back gently. We can now set this aside where it won't get damaged and out of our way. We'll now have to lower down our exhaust. So, before we do that, we're gonna put a strap in place just to hold it up so it doesn't lower too far. We'll now remove our exhaust hangers. Spray those with a little bit of silicon lubricant. That'll make it easier to get them off. And then you can just pry them off.And we'll use our pry bar here. And we'll just pop that off. And then we'll pop off our other side. And there's one more hanger located just in front of your muffler, here, that we'll have to remove as well. And now you can loosen it up and lower it down. It's only gonna give you a little bit of clearance. Next we're gonna move our bumper beam. There'll be three 13 millimeter nuts no each side. We'll use our 13 millimeter socket. Go through the holes to remove those. And now we'll remove from the three from the other side in the same location. Before you lower your bumper down, you'll need to remove the wiring from the bumper here. Just use your trim pan removal tool and pry out one on the side there. And then there's another one located along the bottom. We can now slide our bumper beam off and set it aside. We'll now raise our hitch up and slide it into our frame. You can then use a bungee cord, or any other strap that you may have, to hook it to where your back hatch loop would go into place on the striker there. And your hitch. This'll help you hold it up, making it much easier to install the hardware if you're doing this alone. You'll need to remove some of the foam out of the way so we can get our hardware installed. I just use my pry bar just to knock that excess out of the way for us. Now thread one of your carriage bolts onto your fish wire. Slide one of the spacers on the other end. And then we'll use this end here and we're gonna feed it back down through the holes. I recommend starting with the forward most hole towards the front of the vehicle. And feed in your spacer followed by your bolt. You'll then just drop your bolt down through the whole in the frame. Now, you may have a difficult time getting this bolt through, so you may need a pry bar just to help persuade the metal a little bit to move it into position. Once you get that bolt dropped through we're gonna repeat that for this hole here, and then one on the side. Once you get all three bolts through, you'll repeat the same process on the other side. Now that you've got all six bolts inserted, remove the fish wire from each bolt and place on a conical tooth washer with the teeth facing away from the head of the bolt towards the hitch. Followed by a nut. Now, tighten and torque all of your hardware to the specifications in your instructions using a three quarter socket. Now you can zip tie the wiring that we removed from our bumper beams to your new hitch. And that'll secure it in place. If you don't have a zip tie long enough, you can always string multiple together. We'll now cut out a hole in our fascia to allow the hitch to poke through. There's a small marking that's been outlined here that'll show how we're gonna cut it. Refer to your instructions for further details on the exact measurements. Now you can see how we've cut it out to allow our hitch to poke through. We'll then take our fascia and we'll put it back in place. Kind of get each side lined up underneath the headlight, and that'll hold it in place. I like to keep my leg kind of up against it while I snap one side in just to hold it on. Now you can reinsert the pins that we're located along the bottom side here. Also just push into place and the centers will push right back in.We'll now insert our seven millimeter head bolt. And we'll reinstall that using our seven millimeter socket. And now we'll replace our plastic rivets with the ones that come in the kit. There'll be three in each fender liner on each side. This requires a special tool. So you have to get your own plastic rivet gun from wherever you can find it locally sourced. Any parts store will likely have one available. If you don't have a plastic rivet gun, you can use a wrench to hold the center piece, and then a pair of vice grips to pull the center pin. You'll also have to do the ones located here at the back. Once you've got the plastic rivets reinstalled on both sides, you can put your exhaust back in place. Use a little spray lubricant to make them easier to install, lift it back up and get the two hangers on the furthest rear and the one just in front of the muffler. And then you can remove your strap that you we're using to hold your exhaust up. And you're now ready to hook up your trailer and hit the road. And that completes our installation of Draw Tite's class three two inch trailer hitch receiver on our 2016 Dodge Journey.

Fast shipping. Lots of chips off the paint when arrived and paint generally flaked off in large pieces if hit against frame etc. Used spray paint to cover. Excellent build quality. All parts were there and of excellent quality. Should mention that you just pull the wire out once bolt is in place and that they are one use only. (Obvious now but spent time trying to re-use at first) Found some rust under the bumper so took advantage of it being off and sanded / painted. Bolt holes did not align so some encouraging required with a crowbar while being mindful of the welds. Should mention that torquing bottom bolts lowers side mount holes into position. I spent a fair bit of time trying to loose fit the side bolts in with no luck. Went in fine once lower bolts were tight. Overall very happy. The look is excellent. Install took all day but would be only a few hours if I had to do it again. Thanks etrailer for good service and a great product. 505010

Excellent by all accounts.

Dodge Journey

The look of the finished install is outstanding. The actual install process was tough in my case. I picked this hitch because of how much higher it sits. I am very pleased with the look now that its done. I feel that for the Dodge Journey this is the best looking hitch available. It's estimated that the install should take two hours, and I would agree with that. I had the bumper cover and the bumper reinforcment off in 30 min. I ran into a problem with two of the six bolt holes being off by half the diameter of the hole. To overcome this problem it took me 1-1.5 hours. If your going to tackle this hitch you need to puchase a plastic rivit installer. The hitch comes with replament rivits for the ones drilled out during bumper cover removal. I also cant say enough how much easier it is with a panel removal kit and a clip remover. You really only need the rivit tool and they are cheap enough. Overall i'm very happy with the hitch and the clean look it provides. If the holes had all lined up it woul have been a solid five stars. 472283

Good solid product! Installation was easy! You do not have to drop the exhaust if you have a 3/4 inch crowfoot! I found it easier to get the fish wire into the rear hole by back feeding a wire from outside, then hooking the fish wire with the bolt attached to it and pull it back through. 586269

Delivered quickly, not installed yet, but looks to be a quality product, with a comprehensive install guide and supporting fasteners, even the ones to put the bumper back on. 480312

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • How to Tell if 2018 Dodge Journey Has LED or Incandescent Tail Lights
  • The easiest way to determine if you have LED or incandescent lights on your Dodge Journey is to simply watch them illuminate and turn off. If they come on immediately and turn off immediately then they are most likely LEDs. LEDs will also be quite a bit brighter and almost painful to look at directly. If instead you can see a bit of a transition both when coming on and turning off and the light is a bit duller, you have incandescent bulbs. If you are still unsure I recommend simply...

  • Options for Storing 4-Pole Trailer Wiring Connector
  • Draw-Tite hitch # 76225 is an excellent choice for a clean installed appearance on your 2018 Dodge Journey. As for the 4-pole connector mount you have two ways to go. Some towers prefer to keep the 4-pole wiring tucked inside the vehicle except when they are actually pulling their trailer. The wisdom to this is that the 4-pole is then protected from corrosion from moisture and salt, and also from a potential hit from road debris. If you are towing all the time then stowing the 4-pole...

  • Recommended Parts to Tow a Trailer with a 2015 Dodge Journey
  • Certainly. I recommend the Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver, part # 76225. I like that once it's installed you only see the open receiver tube and not the crossbeam. It is a more difficult install and requires you to cut some fascia on your 2015 Dodge Journey. I've linked the video from when we installed it along with the install details for you. If you prefer an eaier install then look at the Curt # C13201. To install the Curt you need to temporarily remove the spare tire and lower...

  • Trailer Hitch That Fits 2017 Dodge Journey SXT AWD
  • We have a trailer hitch that will fit your 2017 Dodge Journey SXT AWD, but the etrailer trailer hitch # e98845 will NOT fit your '17 Journey SXT models with AWD. The tech note you referenced states, "Hitch does not fit SXT models with AWD." For a trailer hitch that does fit a 2017 Dodge Journey SXT with AWD the only confirmed fit is the Draw-Tite # 76225 which is a Class III hitch with a 2" receiver. This hitch is a complete bolt-on installation so no drilling in your Journey's frame...

  • What is the Diameter of the Crosstube on the Draw-Tite Hitch for a 2018 Dodge Journey
  • The inner diameter of the crosstube on the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 76225 is 1-1/2". Therefore, a trailer hitch cover designed for a 2" receiver tube opening like the Rubber Hitch Cover part # 22282 will not work for this application. With that being said I am certain you could find something to work for this application with just a bit of modifications. I have attached a sample install video for you as well.

  • For your 2018 Dodge Journey I recommend the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Receiver Hitch # 76225. • Comparing Draw Tite Trailer Hitches for 2018 Dodge Journey
  • For your 2018 Dodge Journey the best hitch I recommend is the Draw Tite part # 76225 because it has the best towing capacities, a 2 inch hitch opening which more accessories are made for and has a concealed crosstube which means it's less visible. The install is pretty involved so for an easier to install hitch the Draw Tite hitch part # 75648 is another option to consider. It still has great towing capacities but the crosstube is visible.
