Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Subaru Crosstrek - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2017 Subaru Crosstrek we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Custom Fit Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver offering the two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. Its part number is 76084. Here's what our hitch is going to look like installed on the vehicle. You can see you'll have a cross tube that comes over. It's almost symmetrical, this side is just a touch shorter. I don't think that's something you're going to notice looking at it from the rear of the vehicle but this one is just a little bit shorter. Our cross tube's going to come over, we've got our receiver tube in the middle here.

This is a class III hitch so it's got the two inch by two inch receiver tube opening, and it's going to make this a very, very versatile hitch. To secure all those items you do want to use class III hitch accessories. We're going to use the hole located closest to the front of the vehicle to secure all of those items, that's 5/8 inch in diameter, and you'll see there's a good amount of room around the hole for whatever type of hitch accessory you plan on using whether that's gonna be a hitch fin and clip, locking hitch fin, or anti-rattle device. There is a smaller hole located a little closer to the rear of the vehicle, that's only for use with the J-pin stabilization system which is just another form of anti-rattle device. We've got our plate style safety chain connection point here. As you can see there's a lot of room in there, it's plenty nice and wide open so whatever you decide to hook up you shouldn't have an issue there.

You do have a plate that's been welded on here, this is for the attachment of wiring. In typical wiring implications for your Subaru though, your wiring is going to be up in the rear hatch so if you want it to come out here so you can connect it you'll have to do a little bit of a custom install by going through one of the grommets in the floor to get it out here. When it comes to weight ratings for our hitch, it offers a 525 pound tongue weight rating, that's the maximum downward force we can put here at the receiver tube opening, and it gives us a 3,500 pound gross trailer weight rating. That would be the total weight of our trailer and anything that we're to load off on it. Another thing to keep in mind, the hitch is not rated for use with weight distribution so you don't want to use any type of spring bars or torsion bars on it. You do want to check the owners' manual of your Subaru to see what its tail weight ratings are and go off of whichever those numbers are the lowest. Now a few measurements that are helpful for selecting your ball mount, bike racks, or hitch cargo carriers will be from the ground of the inside to up at the receiver hitch opening we've got about 14 inches.

Then from the center of our hitch fin hole to the outer most edge of our bumper we've got about two. Now for the first step in our installation process we're going to lower down this exhaust a little bit. It's going to give us some room to work. We've got two hangers on this side, then straight over we'll have our third. It's going to be right here. Now we're also going to be pulling the one off located right here.

This gives us some extra room to work. This is going to be just forward and to the driver's side of the rear differential. Now if you do pull this forward hanger you're going to want to support your exhaust. We're just going to use a can buckle strap here. Now to get these off spray lubricant's usually pretty helpful. Just spray your top and your bottom and just separate whichever side of them you can. I think on this side the top might be the easiest. Large screwdriver or pry bar will help you out. All right, that should give us plenty of room. Next up, we're going to pull the plugs out of our frame rails here. Do that on the other side as well. We usually can just hang onto or give back to our customer, we're not going to be putting them back in. Now for getting our hardware in place, we want to take one of our coil bolt leaders or fish wires. Our hardware is going to go here and also here. So take our pull wire, we're going to go in the rear most hole first and we want it to come out our forward hole. Place one of our spacer blocks there, and also thread on one of our carriage bolts. Now we're going to feed our spacer block right up into the frame rail. Then we'll just pull on that bolt leader and bring our bolt right down through that rear hole. Now for the forward we'll do a reverse fish wire technique so for that you want start your block on your pull wire and then your bolt. Put the other bolt on. Let's put our bolt up and through, feed that up into the frame a little bit, put that spacer block in, and then just draw it back down through. Now we'll go to the passenger side where we'll do the same thing there. Now if you run into the situation where your spacer block just won't quite go through, you can see it almost go through there but it won't quite, just use a file and just kind of take a little bit of this edge off just to give it a little room to slide through. Now we're ready to get the hitch raised up into position. Now with the help of an extra set of hands we'll bring our pull wires right down through the holes that are in our hitch fringes. We're going to raise that right up into position. Now for our rear most attachment point we'll pull our pull wire off there. We want to attach a conical tooth washer, the teeth of that need to face up towards our hitch, and the nut. Now we just want to get this started for now, we do that on both sides. Now for our forward attachment point, we've got these round hole spacer blocks. These need to go between the hitch and the frame so we can just tilt down slightly on our hitch, place that on our bolt, and then let our hitch rock back into position. Now we've got one of those to put in on each side, and once those are in position, they're also going to get a conical tooth washer in there. Now we're ready to get our fastener snugged up, and then we can torque them to the appropriate specifications that are listed in our instructions. All right, with all those snugged down we're ready to put our exhaust back in position. A little more spray lubricant may help you out with that job. Now with our exhaust back in place our hitch will be ready for use. That will complete our installation of the Draw-Tite Custom Fit Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 76084 on our 2017 Subaru Crosstrek.

2018 Honda CR-V

I ordered a hitch on 4-4-18 for our 2018 Honda CR-V and received it on 4-9-18 as promised. I ordered a 1.25" receiver but received a 2". I believe the mix-up was due to incorrect packaging & not etrailer's fault. I notified etrailer of the problem & they immediately began to correct it. They sent me a return authorization for the one I received & started looking for the one I needed. I was notified on 4-10-18 that they had shipped a replacement. On 4-11-18 I sent the incorrect hitch back to etrailer and on 4-12-18 I received the replacement. This all transpired within 7 working days. I haven't installed the hitch yet but am confident it will fit. Great folks to work with; would definitely recommend them to anyone else. Thanks again Christie K. & George J. at etrailer. 495549

Excellent experience from start to finish. While ordering the hitch it was easy to determine additional parts needed to make it fully functional (wiring, mounting plate, etc...) and everything arrived very quickly. The packaging was very damaged in shipping but none of the parts had any issues at all. The only thing I can think of to make it a better experience would be a “kit” option that would automatically put all parts in the shopping cart. I would order again from etrailer without hesitation. 486076

Ordered on a Monday, delivered on Thursday, installed on Friday, and put to use on Saturday! The whole process went very smoothly. I watched the install video a couple times before hitch arrived and didn't have any real issues getting it installed. It took me about an hour but that's because I did it solo and without ramps. The video showed that you needed to expand one of the holes in the car frame, but I was able to get the install done without having to expand them. Overall, I'm very pleased. Transaction and install were pain free and the hitch did exactly what I wanted it for...to be able to use my hitch mounted bike rack on my Crosstrek instead of having to use the wife's Suburban every time I needed to use the bike rack. 541605

Customer service was awesome. George J noticed I ordered the wrong size ball thread for the items I ordered and contacted me before sending order. Much appreciated. I ordered the trailer hitch and wiring and could not believe how easy the installation was. I will order all my products and refer all my friends to etrailer.com and again thank you George. 488099

Came with large scratches. Packaging was very poor with no protection of the hitch during shipping. Heavy rust on metal after 1 year. Works great but the paint quality is poor. 526759

Comments

The manufacturer recommends using Krylon Gloss Rough Tuff enamel spray paint to touch up any scratches. Please make sure that you do remove all surface rust before applying any paint, so that you do not seal it in and make it worse. You can usually do some light sanding and remove any existing rust before touching up your hitch. I have also included a link to one our help articles that you may find useful.

PERFORMANCE: This hitch receiver doesn't stick out beyond the back bumper and even though I scrape the ground in some driveways with other vehicles, it doesn't cause my 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek to scrape anyway unless I've got a three-ball hitch in the receiver. I don't tow things often, so I usually don't have the hitch in the receiver. The whole construction feels incredibly solid, and I'm very glad I picked the 2" version instead of the smaller one. Reviews for the smaller one suggest that it sags over time. The XV Crosstrek has a cutout in the bumper for a hitch receiver, but even the OEM hitch receiver from Subaru of America doesn't use it. It's only used in Austria or some other country. There is another brand which is much more difficult to install (you gotta remove the bumper) and it's much more expensive, so I opted for this instead. I'm happy with my choice. INSTALLATION: I installed it on a 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek without jacking up the back end or anything. Opening up the holes in the spare tire compartment would have been easier with a step drill bit or a dremil but I didn't have either. That was the hardest part, but once I got those holes widened I was able to use a standard ramp under the mounting location of one side of the hitch to hold the hitch up while I put the nuts on the other side. Then I moved to the side I had propped up and put nuts on it. After that it was just a matter of tightening up the bolts evenly. Using the ramp made this a one-person job. SOURCING: I shopped around a lot before picking a source, and the prices seemed to be similar wherever I looked, but eTrailer seemed to be the strongest company to get it from. Usually I buy things from Amazon or eBay. I could have gotten a hitch from uHaul too but I loath the idea of advertising for them. 461354

Came earlier than expected, I thought that it will look big on my crosstrek 2013 but it didn't, the item seems very sturdy and it's heavy. Need two people to install it unless you are very creative how to install by yourself. The brackets fits fine. The hole towards the front is bigger than the one toward the bumper. Looks good , tried for my bike rack and fits without problem. Can't wait to use this product . 494576

Everything went off without a hitch!!! The hitch for my daughter's 2017 arrived and we got it installed just in time for her move from Colorado to Portland. I was a little concerned when I saw the packaging damaged however the hitch wasn't scratched. Installation was straight forward just a little scary drilling the 1" hole on both sides of the spare tire compartment to fish the hardware. A great success to allow her to take her bike with her. 321244

Most jobs like this turn into a cluster for me. This was the easiest thing I think I have ever done. It did not even require dropping the exhaust on my 2014 Crosstrek. It took only about a half an hour. The fish wires worked excellent on the first try and I held the hitch up with a floor jack connected everything. 423982

Before I write the review of the installation, I can't stress enough watching the video of the installation on the Subaru Crosstrek. I used to install hitches for trailer rental company so wasn't worried about the actual install but by reviewing the videos before my hitch even arrived allowed me to quick and easily install it. Those are a great resource that etrailer.com provides. Since I didn't have a lift, I used a set of car ramps to get the rear of the car high enough. It was just a little too high to lay down and work but not quite high enough to sit up and work... However, I strongly recommend finding a way to safely lift up the rear to do this install. The hitch itself, what can I really say, bolted on easily, I like the tab for holding the wiring. I ran the wiring first and ran it through one of the drain plugs in the bottom of the spare tire area so that it's always ready to use. This should give us years of great use and light duty towing. NOTE: The hitch is rated much higher than the car is for weight, we went with it because of accessories we already own being 2". 364079

Great hitch receiver that went in with relatively little pain. Wheel ramps made it easier and I would recommend spending the money if you're going to install this in your driveway. The only real hassle was the rearward, passenger-side nut that requires a deep socket to clear the bolt at it comes though. All in all, the total installation was about 30 minutes, but I was a bit lazy and didn't lower the muffler (didn't need to). I would strongly recommend this receiver over the others as this is spec'd to handle bike racks (it's main purpose for me) without a strap. As an additional step, I also sprayed the bolts and nuts with Plasti-Dip to rust-proof them while allowing the ability to peel it off in case of service (not that I see that happening). Great hitch receiver! 420379

Watch the installation video and installing is a snap even if you don't have a car lift! My 62 year old wife and I installed the trailer hitch in under 30 mins! This is the second trailer hitch I have bought from Etrailer and I'm sure not the last. Thank you guys! Now my wife can go bike riding without me! 422829

Well built hitch, nice powder coating. Clear instructions with great hardware. On our 2016 Subaru Crosstrek we did NOT have to drop the exhaust, it fit around it with plenty of clearance so do a trial fit on your vehicle first and you may save a bunch of time. You will need a Universal joint or crowsfoot for your torque wrench on the right rear bolt due to the offset of the mounting point. 399858

Great hitch, fits my car like a glove. I haven't towed with it yet but I have no reason to think there are going to be any issues. One thing I have to say though - the installation video on the site makes it look hillariously easy to install this hitch. Two experienced guys with a shop lift isn't the same as a couple everyday garage nerds with a couple ramps. While there is no wizardry involved, the hitch is incredibly heavy and very awkward to hold up in place. However, the instructions are clear and concise... all I'm saying is that make sure you have help and realize it may take a bit longer than stated. I did not drop the exhaust as they did in the video. It might have made the passenger side a little easier, but I didn't see any great advantage to doing this. One other thing - I was shorted some hardware for the hitch, but etrailer.com was very quick in responding and contacting the manufacturer to have a new hardware kit drop shipped. Took a few extra days, but things happen. It was certainly nice to have the extra fish wires. :) 507987

Product is just as described and works as advertised. I installed it in about 30 minutes without lifting the car or lowering the exhaust at all. It will go in with a little finesse and wiggling. A buddy is preferable as they can hold one side in position while you start the nuts on the other. Be careful not to push the bolts back up in frame while trying to start the nuts. 651919

2017 Subaru Crosstrek

Moderately easy to install for someone who has never done it but has some mechanical aptitude. I did not drop the exhaust as instructed and it would have made it easier to torque the nuts but if you have the right tools, you can skip dropping it. Fishing the bolts was interesting but went easier than I thought. I had a hard time reading the directions on that part but I found a YouTube video that made it all make sense. It helps to have a magnetized tool retriever thing if you happen to lose a bolt in the frame. I did not have a second set of hands to help me hold up the hitch for the bolt up but it wasn’t too hard to do with a 1’ X 3’ piece of plywood to balance the hitch on and a jack to raise it in place. Took me about 45 minutes to install and the video that etrailer provided helped a lot! 640229

Great product and somewhat easy to install. It would be easier if you have another set of hands to help you. I had to use a jack to help hold it up, but managed it in the end. You won’t be disappointed. Have used it multiple times to carry a cargo rack. Makes it a lot better at getting bags of mulch at the home improvement store, rather than getting the inside of my car dirty. 606653

Got my Draw-Tite hitch in a couple of days and got it mounted easily. I like that this model doesn't require the support strap. It took maybe 30 minutes total. It is heavy so an extra set of hands helped. But I could have done it solo if I took the time to securely support it. Figure I easily saved $200+ by ordering it and then installing myself. Have already used it on a bike trip and it worked great. 578497

Deciding to do my own install on my 2017 Subaru Crosstrek, I ordered a Draw-Tite hitch and a T-1 wiring harness from eTrailer. The provided videos showing each install were extremely helpful and instrumental to my DIY mindset. Today at 1:30 pm I received my package from UPS. The install actually began this morning by taking time prior to the scheduled delivery by backing my car onto the ramps and dropping the exhaust pipe and muffler. That took about 30 minutes. At 2:00 pm I unpacked. The install had no surprises, other than the weight of the unit and figuring out the easiest way to start the nuts, not a particularly easy feat for a 64 year old man, flat on his back underneath a car. I was finished and cleaned up in time for dinner, 5:00 pm. THANKS, eTRAILER.com!!! 566152

I ordered the hitch on Saturday night and received it by Thursday morning. It fits perfectly on the Subaru Crosstrek, the only additional step we had to do was increase the holes for the screws with our own tools. It was used to transport 4 bikes from LA to SF and worked just fine. 513695

This is a review on simply the shipping and customer service that I received on this product. When I received this package it was in a poor state. The hitch was sticking out of the box in several place and the staples on the box had ripped out, leaving the shipping company to tape it together. I get that Etrailer doesn't have control of what happens to the package after it leaves the facility but they do have the ability to package the item better before handing it off. Letting a heavy hitch rattle around in a cardboard box isn't sufficient packaging. Feel free to add bubble wrap to the sharp corners or Styrofoam to limit the products mobility in the box. At this point I called into customer service and explained my situation to the representative. She said that there wasn't anything that she could do except let her shipping department know. Her response felt almost scripted, leading me to believe that she has dealt with this many times before. Meaning the shipping department just doesn't care to make it better. I do regret leaving a negative review but maybe by doing this future customer orders will be handled better. Heres hoping. 509860

This was my second time doing business with etrailer, I guess that means the first time was good. Yes it was. I ordered a hitch receiver and not only did it arrive in the time-frame that was described, the UPS driver actually put it in my garage. Nice. My son and I put it on the car after watching the detailed video, and it all worked just great. I think that etrailer can show others how a business model should work. Thanks 506200

The trailer has performed excellently. I gave it four stars instead of five because it has started to rust somewhat. Otherwise purchasing the hitch from etrailer was an awesome experience. i recommend etrailer to all my friends. 488371

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • What is the Stabilizing Strap that Curt Requires for Some of Their Trailer Hitches
  • Out of the Curt trailer hitch part # C11286 and part # C13135 for your 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek I recommend going with the part # C13135 as it has 2 inch receiver opening so it will be compatible with a wider range of accessories. Installation videos have been attached for both options. As you read, per the Curt warranty a stabilization strap must be used for all non-trailer loads. The reason being that they are not supported by their own set of wheels like a trailer would be. A stabilization...

  • Comparing Curt & Draw-Tite Class III Trailer Hitches for 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek
  • The hitch I recommend for your 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek is the 2-inch Class III Draw-Tite # 76084. Unlike the Curt # C13135, the Draw-Tite does not require you to use a support strap # 18050 with non-trailer loads like bike and cargo carriers. Both will install under your rear bumper fascia as shown in the linked video. The hitch comes with all required installation hardware. Both brands produce a quality hitch and both share the same weight capacities but the USA-made Curt's powder...

  • 2013 Subaru Impreza Premium Hatchback 2 Reciever Trailer Hitch Recommendation
  • For your 2013 Subaru Impreza Hatchback, we do have one 2 inch receiver available. It is the EcoHitch Invisi Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 306-X7211. This trailer hitch receiver will only fit models with center knock-out panel in the lower rear fascia, and does not fit WRX or WRX STi models. A Class I trailer hitch receiver will work fine to carry 2 bikes on your Impeza if you use a Class I compatible bike rack. Some racks will have more than 2 bikes, but the...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendations for a 2017 Subaru Impreza
  • Trailer hitch # 76084 is designed for the Subaru Crosstrek and does not fit any years of the Impreza. All of the trailer hitches for the 2017 Subaru Impreza are Class I hitches with 1-1/4 inch receivers. If you have a 5-door wagon model with single exhaust you can use trailer hitch # DT24959. For the sedan you can use # 24960. If you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier then you have to make sure the accessory is rated for use with a Class I trailer...

  • Hitch Recommendation for 2017 Subaru Crosstrek that Doesn't Require Stabilizer Strap
  • With platform bike racks the stabilizer strap like part # 18050 does require a bit more creativity but we have come up with a solution. What you need to do is run the strap through the bike frame and then around the center post of the bike rack and then back to the trunk lid. Check out the picture I attached for more info. Or the easier alternative for your 2017 Subaru Crosstrek is get a hitch like the Draw Tite part # 76084 which does not require the strap at all. This would give you...

  • Dirt Bike Carrier and Ramp Recommendation for 2014 Subaru Crosstrek
  • There are a couple of ways to carry your 295 lb dirt bike with your 2014 Subaru Crosstrek. A hitch carrier like the Ultra-Fab Motorcycle Carrier, part # UF48-979033 will physically fit in a trailer hitch for your vehicle. However, I took a look at the owner's manual for your Crosstrek and found that the tongue weight capacity of your vehicle is 200 lbs, so I cannot recommend going this route as this would exceed your vehicle's limitations. The tongue weight is the weight that is pushing...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek
  • The Draw-Tite 1-1/4 inch Trailer Hitch Receiver # 36523 that you referenced is not a confirmed fit for your 2017 Subaru Crosstrek. For your Crosstrek I recommend going with the Draw-Tite # 76084. This is a Class III trailer hitch receiver with a 2 inch opening that will allow you to use more accessories than the 1-1/4 inch version. If you still would like a 1-1/4 inch I recommend using the Draw-Tite # DT24959. I have attached a video of these hitches being installed on similar Crosstreks...

  • Best Trailer Hitch for Carrying the Yakima Dr. Tray with a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek
  • Both the Curt # C13135 and the Draw-Tite # 76084 trailer hitches are excellent options to use for carrying a bike rack with your 2017 Subaru Crosstrek. Personally I like the Draw-Tite a little better because a safety strap is not required, but some people don't mind using the strap # 18050 so it really comes down to preference. Both hitches will allow you to use the Dr. Tray, part # Y02473 for 2 bike or part # Y02473-02475 for 3 bike, to carry your bikes around. I have attached...

  • Comparing Draw Tite and Curt Hitches for 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek
  • There are a few differences between the Draw Tite hitch part # 76084 and the Curt part # C13135 which are confirmed as a fit for your 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek. I recommend the Draw Tite though because if you were to ever carry a bike rack you wouldn't have to use a stabilizer strap like the Curt requires with non-supported loads like bike racks. Aside from that the Draw Tite has a round cross tube and the Curt has a square. Some argue that the round is less visible.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek for Towing Small Trailer
  • You did the right thing by first checking your owners manual to determine it's towing capacity. That figure is going to be the overall capacity of your vehicle regardless of the capacity of the hitch you go to install so you should keep it in mind with what you'd plan to tow. You'd probably have to find a lighter trailer in order to make this endeavor worthwile. The Draw Tite hitch part # 76084 is not a new brand or hitch. It's been around quite some time and is typically what we recommend...

  • Does Draw Tite Hitch # 76084 Fit 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek
  • For your 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek the Draw Tite hitch part # 76084 that you referenced is a confirmed fit and would work well. But if you have vehicle towing capacity that is 1,500 lbs that would be the overall towing capacity since is limited by the lowest rated component. So you'd have to consider the weight of the trailer you plan to tow and the weight of any cargo you'd load in it to determine if this would be a safe choice.

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendation for 2016 Subaru Crosstrek
  • The tongue weight figure for a trailer hitch like the part # 76084 that you referenced accounts for the movement and additional force that would be put on the hitch while traveling on the road. So the capacity is a static figure but it's also under rated so that the things mentioned do not overload it. This hitch can be used to tow a trailer with dirt bikes as well pretty easily too. For trailer wiring you'd want the part # 118467. Since you wanted to do some towing you might be interested...
