Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Ford Taurus - Curt

Speaker 1: Today on our 2017 Ford Taurus, we're gonna be taking a look at showing how to install the Curt Class 2 custom-fit trailer hitch receiver, part number C12296. So here's what our hitch looks like when we have it installed. It is gonna sit just right below the bumper, and that cross tube is gonna be hidden nicely behind the bumper so all we're gonna see is that receiver tube sticking out. It is a Class 2 hitch, which means it's gonna give us that inch and a quarter by inch and a quarter receiver tube opening, and as you can see it has a nice reinforced collar giving it added strength and just an overall finished look. Now since it is a Class 2 hitch, we're gonna be mounting all of our accessories here and they do include a standard half inch pin and clip, which is always a bonus. As far as the safety chain connection points go, it's gonna be a loop style and they're gonna be inaudible 00:00:50 to the bottom of our receiver tube. And as you can see, we're not gonna have too much trouble getting most size hooks on or off, so I want to keep in mind that they are directly in line with that pin hole so if you are using a locking device, just want to make sure that it's not gonna interfere with the hooks. As far as weight capacity is concerned, our hitch is gonna feature a 300 pound tongue weight, along with a 3,500 pound gross trailer weight rating.

Now per the manufacturer, they do recommend that you use a stabilization strap any time you have any non-trailer loads or any loads that are not supported by tires such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier. Like to give you a few measurements that'll help you in deciding for accessories for your new hitch such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier.Let's give you a few measurements that will help you in deciding for accessories for your new hitches, such as a bike rack or even a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper, it's gonna be right about six and a half inches and from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, that's gonna be right about 12 and a half inches. Now that we've seen what our hitch looks like and gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed. To begin our installation, we are gonna have to lower our exhaust down so I'm gonna take a strap and I'm gonna come back to where our exhaust Y is, then I'm gonna put my strap on a secure spot so that when we lower it down, it won't go down too far and we'll have some support. Now on the inside of our tailpipe just right by our muffler, we're gonna have one hanger on each side and take a little bit of spray lubricant and that's gonna make it a little bit easier to get the hanger off of the rubber isolator.

So we can go ahead and spray both sides down and then also right by where we put our strap where it Ys together, we're gonna have another hanger as well.I'm just gonna take a pry bar and it doesn't matter if you pry it off of the muffler or the hanger, but you're gonna want to get that rubber isolator off of one of the posts so that we can lower our exhaust down. And we'll do that for the other muffler as well. And that last one we'll go ahead and pry that rubber isolator off as well. Now we got plenty of room to work with underneath our frame. The rubber that we have on each one of our mufflers regardless if you took it off of the muffler or the hanger, we're gonna want to pull it off so that it's completely separate from the vehicle and we're gonna set it aside because we will be reinstalling it, we're just not gonna be using the configuration that's on the car right now.So we're gonna pull the other one off as well. And right above our muffler on the passenger side, we're gonna have two bolts that are holding in that hanger and we're using an 18 millimeter socket to remove it.

I'm going to go ahead and pull it down. Now here on the driver's side, we're gonna have that same hanger, but the bolts are gonna be a 10 millimeter so we're gonna use a 10 millimeter socket to pull them out. Here on the passenger side, I want to go over the mounting locations that we're gonna be using in our frame. At the very back of our frame, we're gonna have an oblong hole and that's gonna be one mounting location. If we move forward, we're also gonna be using the forward hole that was mounting our exhaust hanger.

We're gonna have a hex bolt and we're gonna follow that up with a conical tube washer and that's what's gonna be threading into that existing hole right here. Now the driver's side, it is gonna be a little bit different. We're still gonna be using that oblong hole at the end of the frame, but then if we move forward, we're gonna be using the oblong hole that was behind our muffler hanger mounts. And I'll show you how we're gonna get our hardware into these hole. First we're gonna start with our pull wire, and we're gonna start at that oblong hole towards the front and we're gonna feed our wire towards the back of our frame until we can come out the oblong hole at the end here. That may take a little bit of patience and finesse. We're just gonna want to keep working until we get it through. Then we can take our square spacer blocks and we're gonna go over the threaded end and then we're gonna take our carriage bolts and we're gonna thread it onto the coiled end. And once you have the bolt threaded on individually, we're gonna put our spacer block into the frame and feed it in and then you're going to feed our carriage bolt in. Then we're going to pull on our pull wire so we can get out hardware to drop through. Now you're going to want to carefully remove the pull wire because they do only provide us with two and we have two more pieces of hardware we're going to have to get in place. Then we just unthread it from the bolt. Then we get ready to put our hardware into this oblong hole at the end of the frame. This is going to be a little bit different method. Since we're going through our access hole, we're going to take our square spacer block, we're going to slide it over, thread it in, and then take another one of those carriage bolts and thread it in place. We're going to take our carriage built, push it into the frame, followed by our spacer block, and then we're going to pull everything back down through. Now on this pice of hardware, we can leave our fish wire attached, making it a little bit easier when we go to put our hitch in place. We're going to repeat the same process on the passengers side on the end of the frame. We can go ahead and grab our hitch. And a quick tip is you can actually put your hitch on the exhaust because if you remember, we had that strap support it, so it's not going to be putting too much support on it. That way if you don't have an extra set of hands, we can get this in place by ourselves. So with the hitch sitting on our exhaust, starting on the passenger side, we're going to take our pull wire and we're going to feed it through the top of our hitch going down and we're going to lift up the passenger side so our built goes through. And then we can remove our pull wire. And we're going to be using a half inch flange nut to secure the hitch to the frame. You're just going to want to get a couple threads on hand tight, support this side of the hitch. Then we can move over the driver's side. We're going to do the same thing: take our pull wire, we're going to feed it down to the top of the hitch, help us line our bolts. Just want to be very careful over here on the driver side because you don't want your bolts to get pushed back into the frame. Because remember that one doesn't have a pull wire attached to it anymore. So I get a couple threads in place so that it can support it. And then we need to work on getting the rest of our hardware in. For that forward hole in the passenger side, we're going to take that bolt with that conical tube washer, the teeth facing up towards the hitch and threaded into place. Come back with a 19 millimeter and I'm going to snug up all my hardware. I'm going to come back with a 19 millimeter socket and torque wrench and I'm going to torque all my hardware down. We're going to find that specification in our instructions. We're going to repeat that for all of hardware. With our hitch secure, we're going to take our rubber isolators from our exhaust hangers. I'm going to spray just a little bit more lubricant inside of there. There's going to be a bar on our hitch just towards the inside of where our mounting bolts are and that's where we're going to be sliding our exhaust hanger on. And that lubricants just to make it a little bit easier to get on. And that's going to replace that bracket that we took off. We'll do that for the other side as well. With our hangers in place, we can lift our exhaust back up and slide it back into place. Suggest starting earlier on the driver's side because it is going to be tilted and a lot easier to get this one in place first. We move over the passenger side, lifting up on the muffler and sliding the rubber isolator back on the hanger. And finally we can kind of pry that rubber isolator away just a bit. And slide it back on the hanger at the Y and remove the strap. And that'll finish up your look at the Curt Class 2 custom fit trailer hitch receiver, part number C12296 on our 2017 Ford Taurus.

Great Product - Easy installation - Watch the Video and you want have any problems. I used two jack stands and floor jack to ease with product. I am an old 66 year old man who has been in remission with leukemia for 15 years and installed it myself. I used the floor jack to lift up one side at a time and I forget I used a 5 gallon bucket to hold up the other end until I got the bolts in. The job took about an hour and 1/2 for me due to resting at times. 653135

The trailer hitch receiver looked good and seemed to be well manufactured. I do have two concerns. 1. The way the product was shipped. The box was twice as large as it needed to be and one of the wings of the hitch was sticking out of the box. 2. When I was installing the receiver hitch, I could not get the fourth bolt to go in. I had started the nuts on the bolts that dropped through the frame, but when I tried to start the fourth bolt where the mufflerhanger had been it would go in. 574182

I purchased this hitch for a 2011 Taurus. The price was very resonable. I'm 73 years old and I installed this by myself in less than 3 hours. The attached directions were very good and it was easy to install. I didn't have to drill any holes. The hitch included everything I needed to install the hitch. I also purchased the electrical kit. It also installed easy with great directions. I was very pleased with my purchase and would recommend this hitch to anyone needing one. I use it to pull a 6 x 8 foot trailer and have used it numerous times. It works great. 482797

Installation of the hitch and light harness could not have been easier. Just like it is shown in the video. The pln that holds the receiver in the hitch did not work for me. The pin hit the hitch when spinning to align the hole for the cotter pin. The hole was always at an angle that prevented me form inserting the pin. The pin with the groove for the cotter pin worked for me. Still very happy with the product. 441349

After getting estimates on having a Trailer Hitch installed on our Taurus we choose to do our own installation of a Hitch and a Wiring Harness. Using your Videos as a guide we ordered the Hitch and Harness along with the proper Receiver. Using the Video's while we were installing these items proved to be the correct way to install them. Most Helpful and most gratifying afterward. If we could do it, you can also. Were in our late 70's with a brand new Wave Runner we intend to use . 429525

The hitch and wiring were very easy to install. My only issue was finding a good place to run the power wire up to the battery from the trunk. 424391

First off, shipping was fast. Only problem I had was I had to wait a couple of days for the weather to clear before I could do the install. I watched the videos before installing the tow bar and wiring harness and it was an easy install. Looks great on the car and now the wife and I can start using our small trailer to haul our camping / glamping gear. Great product, great customer service and great instructional videos. I would have to say that Etrailer will be getting more of my business real soon. 341170

I ordered the Curt Class 2 hitch for my 2012 Taurus to pull a motorcycle trailer and/or mount a bike rack. All the parts came in right on time and I had no problems with the installation, though If you can get a helper do so (pretty heavy). The installation video was very helpful. All the parts look like good quality and am very pleased that the hitch is barely visible. I also ordered the Curt wiring kit and that went in without a hitch. Har Har 232636

Bought the hitch to use solely to carry a bike rack. When I saw I would have to fish three of the bolts and spacers through the frame I was a little intimidated. However after studying the instructions on using the fishing wire, it was really a snap. I completed the installation without even having to jack up the car! It took more time to clean out the one threaded weld than to fish the other three. This is my second Curt hitch. This one is on a 2010 Ford Taurus. The other on a 2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring. Both for bike racks. Both perfect fits. Shipping was free and quick. Highly recommend etrailer and this hitch. 131262

Hitch was shipped in a timely manner. Upon arrival, I installed on a 2013 Ford Taurus. Pretty straight forward. The pictures that can be found on eTrailers website accurately depicted the installation procedure. The hardest part was getting the fishing cable to the hole so I could fish the bolts to the correct holes. I like the way the hitch looks on the car. It is hidden and not really noticeable. I won't be able to give towing feedback as this hitch will only be used to carry bicycles. Good product and good company to do business. Would recommend eTrailer!! 96156
