Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2013 Hyundai Tucson

Rob: Hey everybody. Rob here at And today, we're going to be taking a look at the CURT class-three custom-fit trailer hitch receiver on our 2013 Hyundai Tucson. Now, here's where our hitch is going to look like once we have it installed. I think it has a really clean appearance. The crosstube's going to be hidden behind the bumper so the main thing we're going to see sticking out is that receiver tube. But it is tucked just inside of the bumper so we really shouldn't have to worry about hitting our leg on the back, unless we're already rubbing against our car and really underneath it.

We shouldn't have to worry about hitting it or interfering with anything. But our hitch is going to be a class-three, which means it gives us that two-inch by two-inch receiver tube opening, which really opens up the doors for accessories that we can mount up. A two-inch receiver tube opening is going to have the widest variety of options when it comes to accessories. Obviously, if you have a hitch, you can tow a trailer with it, put a ball mount in there, no problem. But at the same time, it's going to allow us to take some bikes with us with a hitch-mounted bike rack, or if we need to make some room on the inside of our Tucson for passengers, pets, we can move all the gear to the outside with a cargo carrier, just making a lot more options and accessories that we can mount up.But regardless of how we're going to be using our hitch, all the accessories are going to mount using the hitch pin hole here on the side. The hitch is going to accept a standard five-ace pin and clip.

Now, these are not going to be included with the kit, but you can find them here at, along with some locking devices to make sure you're accessories are secure and anti-rattle devices to cut down on that annoying rattling sound when we're driving down the road. Now, if you are going to be towing a trailer, obviously you need a spot to hook up your safety chains. And here, we're going to have a loop-style welded to the bottom of the receiver tube. And if you have normal size hooks, you'll have no problem getting those engaged or taking them off. But at the same time, you have those really oversized, larger hooks, you'll still have plenty of room. You can see when we get those on there, make any kind of adjustments to it that we need, and easily take them off without having to worry about interfering or potentially hitting the bottom of the bumper. Now, as far as the capacity for our hitch goes, it's going to have a 350-pound tongue weight.

That's going to be the maximum downward pressure at the end of the receiver tube. Now, to put that in perspective, 350 pounds will be able to carry a decent amount of bikes with us on our bike rack, or really be able to load up some of those smaller cargo carriers. Now, the hitch is also going to have a 3,500-pound gross trailer weight rating. That's how much the hitch can pull, but that does include the trailer and everything we have loaded on it. Now, with those numbers in mind, I still urge you to double-check your Tucson's owner's manual because those are the ratings for the hitch, and we don't want to exceed the manufacturer's rating for our car.I'd like to give you a few measurements and these are going to help you whenever you're looking for accessories for your new hitch.

From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is going to be right about four-and-a-half inches. Now, that measurement is going to help you when you're looking at folding accessories, to make sure you have enough room so you can put those accessories in the upright storage position, and they're not going to come in contact with the rear bumper. From the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening is right about 14-and-a-half inches. Now, at that height, I definitely recommend a bike rack or a cargo carrier with a raised shank. That way we can get a little bit more ground clearance out of it and not have to worry as much about bottoming out. But that measurement's also going to help you when you're looking at ball mounts so you can find the appropriate rise or drop to match up to your trailer. But now that we see what our hitch looks like and gone over some of the features, let's go through the installation process together. To begin our installation, we want to come to the back of our Tucson and we're going to move underneath the bumper on the edge and we're going to find the frame-rail. Now, on the frame-rail, we're going to have a few threaded holes on the bottom. We need to clean those weld nuts out because those are going to be our two attachment points on each side. And what I like to do is I'll take some spray lubricant and spray it inside the weld nut and I'll come back, grab a nylon tube brush. This is going to brush out all the dirt, debris, and rust that's inside. That way, we can make sure that our hardware is not going to cross thread and we can get it in easily. We'll have our M-10 bolt. We want to put a conical-tooth washer in place, and there's little teeth on that washer. You want to make sure those are facing up towards the hitch. Our hitch will be sitting against the frame. We'll go through the hitch and secure it with the hardware threading it into the frame. That's going to be the same combination for each four of the weld nuts on the frame. Now, at this point, I suggest getting an extra set of hands to help you lift the hitch up. It's not that heavy, but it's really hard to balance it and try to get it in place. We're going to start with the passenger side. We're going to go right over the exhaust pipe, feed it in between the exhaust and the bumper there. Then, we can get the driver's side in place. We'll line up the holes on the frame. You want to get at least one bolt started hand tight on each side. That way, the hitch will hold itself up and we can come back and put the rest of the hardware in place.Once all the hardware is in place, we're going to come back with a 17-millimeter socket and snug it all up. Then, I'm going to come back with a torque wrench. I'm going to torque all my hardware down to the specified amount in the instructions. Now, you don't need an extension, but it will make it a little bit easier to access those bolts so you can clear the muffler and actually get a good swing on the torque wrench. We're going to go back and repeat that for all of our remaining hardware. Once you have your last bolt torqued down, that'll finish up your installation and your look at the CURT class-three custom fit trailer hitch receiver on our 2013 Hyundai Tucson.

2010 Hyundai Tucson

I looked everywhere for wire brushes to clean the hole underneath my Tucson. I could only find plastic. I spent hours cleaning 10 years of dirt out of the holes until I could get a bolt into the holes. I had to use a floor Jack to hold up the hitch so I could get the bolts started. It took me a few hours to finish the job.

Hyundai Tucson

It was easy to install and has been super solid. It’s pulled my camper all over the west. And I think it makes our Tucson look more serious and capable.

Thank you Carol! I appreciate the amazing communication and your pleasant demeanor. You're so thoughtful and kind. Thanks for keeping me posted about my order and following up with me after I received it. The hitch fit perfectly! Best wishes to you all.

Thank you so much!

It was perfect for adding the bike rack to the car.

2011 Kia Sportage

This was a fantastic buy! It took me twenty minutes to install by myself. Had to acquire a torque wrench to finish it off, but that was only a $10 purchase. I have used the hitch twice now since my installation, and would recommend e-trailer to everybody, and anybody looking for a tow hitch. Forgot to mention it was 1/4 the price of the dealer, and you can barely tell it is on the vehicle.

It was an easy install. The direction is concise for my vehicle. The wiring took me 3hrs to get hooked up. what I like about it I did not have to cut into my car wiring harness, made the job easy and clean. once the electrical connection was done the hitch only took 30 minutes to mount. You do not need special tools to install the hitch. I was shopping around and etrailer was the only one to have the trailer wiring harness for my vehicle. very fast service and they keep you up to date on your order, Thanks.

2012 Kia Sportage

Just recently bought a 2012 Kia Sportage that needed a hitch . Dealer ship wanted an extreme price to put a hitch on .
So I just did it my self . Very easy install it's just 4 bolts . If yours is an vehicle from the north a wire brush is a must to clean bolt holes .The videos are a big help if you are less mechanically inclined

Ford Transit Connect

Happy overall with the product, but it wasn't packaged very well. It was simply put into the box without any restraint or padding around it - meaning that it was able to move around in the box in transit. It's a hitch, so I expect it to get dinged up over time, as it will sit under my car, but its a little disaapointing that it starts out this way even before I receive it.

Thank you for your feedback. I will have our customer service team reach out to you. You are correct that over time the hitch will experience dings from road debris and for that reason I would recommend touching up the hitch with a rust resistant paint.

Received my order so fast! It fits like a glove, installed and ready to mount my bike rack about 15 minutes after the UPS man left.. wish everything installed so easy - absolutely no swearing involved.

Very nice hitch. Took me about 20 min after unboxing and gathering the required tools to get it installed.
I bought this primarily to secure a bike rack to my Kia Sportage and it works perfectly for this purpose.

Still working great for hauling my mountain bike around!

2014 Kia Sportage

Hitch arrived relatively undamaged. The hitch was well made and looked great. The sticker for the weight rating was almost completely destroyed. Not a big deal but just wonder if a replacement sticker could be acquired. Install of the hitch was a breeze. Fit exactly. Good tips about cleaning weld nuts & test bolts before actual install. Had one that was a little more stubborn than the rest. Would have been more difficult if I tried to clean & hold hitch at the same time. Install took very little time. Get the passenger side sting on the tailpipe & star pattern the bolts.
When my order was placed the rep was steering me to a different Curt hitch. Not much more $ but the only difference was the other hitch was rated for weight distribution. My little Kia isn’t even close to being able to pull that much. Seems like the rep should know that and have a more appropriate suggestion or at least ask what it was I would be towing/hauling.
A note to let the recipient know the bolts/washers are inside a bag taped in the receiver tube would save a phone call.
I could have saved a few dollars by going with another vendor but etrailer’s reputation for taking care of the customer won me over.
Would order again and recommend.

Sorry that the sticker was damaged, Tom.Ive spoken with the folks at Curt, who will ship out a new label for you.

The trailer hitch and bike rack were exactly as described. It fit perfectly and was just what I needed. The instructions for the hitch said that the installation time was 15 minutes and I expected the worst and figured it would take over an hour. I spent more time unwrapping the the paper than the actual installation.20 minutes later it was clean up time.
Thank you for the great product!

A year later it’s good as new

2013 Hyundai Tucson

I'm a bit creaky and I move slowly. I don't have a lift, and I didn't use jack stands. I had to make two trips back inside from the driveway (once for spray lube, once for a socket adapter), and I still finished installation in under 30 minutes.

At least 10 minutes of that was cleaning out the driver side weldnuts, which were a bit rustier than the passenger side. I highly recommend threading a bolt all the way through each hole before doing anything else.

The hitch hides well under the rear bumper, and look factory. I highly recommend it.

2012 Kia Sportage

Fit like a glove. Said it would take 15 minutes to install but was done in 8 minutes!!

2013 Hyundai Tucson

Works great for all our needs. Grateful.

2015 Kia Sportage

All necessary parts shipped.
Had trouble
cleaning out nuts welded in frame. Two bolts went in after about
an hour of trying. Still waiting for the penetrating oil to free the rust and debri in the other two. This is NOT etrailer's fault. The installation would have gone very similar to the video if it were not for the frame-nut problem.
etrailer's customer service was very helpful.

So far, so good. I use it mainly for a bike rack, but it has been used to haul a small trailer. I am pleased and would consider buying another one when I buy a new vehicle. Thanks

Fantastic !! No issues

Great quality for a reasonable price

2013 Hyundai Tucson

Hitch and wiring system. Very pleased with both products. The corner of the hitch receiver was bent when I received it, luckily the person installing it was able to make the adjustment. The hitch itself was too low, but that was my ordering error. The wiring harness was easy to install. Great company to deal with. I was able to call and speak to a customer service representative because I had questions originally. And what company follows up after a year, unheard of. I would recommend dealing with e-trailer. Very positive

Alex and etrailer were great . Hitch came day sooner than expected. Didn't like prices shops wanted so decided to DIY install. So with one good arm and hand (and one not good- stroke impairment) used a windshield sun shield to get on cold garage floor. Got hitch up and rested on tailpipe And used hitch cardboard packing box with a small chair cushion to put hitch on to raise it up some. After figuring best position to use good arm, was able to push a bolt up on passenger side and started. Put second bolt also-feeling cocky now. Did same on drivers side-actually harder side for me. 2 bolts finally- all done. Son saw it and said "YOU did that?"
Birthday 87 in April .

Everything is as defined and instructions are clear and concise. Always have the best from When I order from them I am confident that I am getting what I need. Delivery was punctual as promised.

Easy to install. No surprises.

2015 Kia Sportage

The product arrived in a few days as advertised. The hitch looks well built, sturdy and well engineered. I put this hitch on a 2015 Kia Sportage. The only problem I had was with corroded threads in the existing welded nuts on the car. I could not get the bolts to take the thread even after soaking them with penetrating oil. The directions warned that this might be a problem so it was the 1st thing I checked. I drove to my local well stocked auto parts store (not one of the national chains) and bought a tap the same size as the nut threads, took it home and cleaned the threads. From the time I got home it literally took me 10 minutes to install the hitch. For the 2015 model I did not need to drop the exhaust. I just snaked the passenger side between the frame and the tail pipe, held up that side, ran a bolt in to hold it. There are no obstructions on the drivers side. It lifted straight up and into place. Using the slotted holes in the hitch, I adjusted it so it wasn't touching the frame anywhere and tightened the bolts. Done. Easiest hitch I've ever installed. The hitch does touch and deform the plastic rear bumper slightly, but doesn't cause any problem. Can't see it or hear it. So yeah. I'll get my next hitch from etrailer as well.

2011 Hyundai Tucson

Have a 2011 hyundai tucson limited, hitch was easy to install, just 4 bolts. Fits great, really sturdy and solid. I had a second pair of hands during install but definitely not necessary. Didnt even have to jack up the car or move the exhaust pipe. Definitely recommend cleaning the mounting holes beforehand with a toothbrush or wire brush and some cleaner (i used wd-40, it works just the same) and screwing in the bolts halfway beforehand to test fit before you're balancing a heavy hitch receiver trying to get the threads to catch. No complaints so far, haven't used it to tow yet. 2

2015 Kia Sportage

Trailer hitch arrived on time. Package was in great shape, and well designed to protect contents.Had a friend help, and it only took about 15 minutes to install.Looks great, I would recommend etrailer to any of my friends. I will be using my hitch for a bike rack and a cargo carrier.

  • How Much do the Hyundai Tucson Trailer Hitches Weigh
The really good news is that the weight of the trailer hitch does not count against your towing capacities. Reason being that the hitch basically becomes a part of the chassis of the vehicle according to our hitch manufacturers. That said I'll give you the hitch weights for the 2 inch hitches we offer for your vehicle. The Curt # C13066 weighs 26 lbs. The Draw Tite part # 75717 weighs 37 lbs

  • Will the Curt Ball Mount Part # C45036 Fit a 2012 Kia Sportage with Class III Hitch Installed
Yes, the Curt ball mount part # C45036 that you referenced would fit the Curt Class III hitch part # C13066 you have installed on your 2012 Kia Sportage. This ball mount will provide you a hitch ball that has a 2 inch drop. I attached a help article on how to pick out the correct rise/drop ball mount for you to check out as well.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation and Comparison for 2014 Hyundai Tucson
For your 2014 Hyundai Tucson there are a few options for trailer hitches. I would go with the Draw Tite part # 75717 as it has the highest capacities and best price but I can explain the differences too. The Curt hitches part # C13120 and # C13066 are both a fit too but these are different capacities. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendation for a 2015 Hyundai Tucson
Actually the Curt Hitch part # C13120 does not require the use of a stabilizer strap when carrying a non-supported load like a bike rack. The other Curt hitch part # C13066 that has been confirmed as a fit for your 2015 Hyudai Tucson would require the use of the strap since it is not rated for use with a weight distribution system. If a Curt hitch is not rated for a WD system then they recommend the use of the # 18050. If you have LED trailer lights the correct wiring harness would be...

  • Trailer Hitch and Towing Accessories Recommended for 2011 Kia Sportage SX Turbo Model
Hidden Hitch, Draw-Tite and Curt now make hitches that are compatible with the SX turbo model, although that wasn't always the case. I'd recommend the Curt Class III hitch, part # C13120 because it has the highest tongue weight capacity at 525 lbs and is the least expensive option. Curt makes a high quality product, so the fact that you'll save a dollar or three won't mean you have to compromise anything. If you'll be towing with the hitch, you'll also need the following accessories: Trailer...
