Features to know about

Built for Work and Adventure: Trax Rail System

The built-in T-slot rails make this cover ideal for anyone hauling gear above the bed. You can mount T-slot-compatible racks from Thule, Yakima, or Rhino-Rack to carry bikes, kayaks, ladders, or rooftop tents while keeping the bed free for other cargo. The Trax Rail System doesn’t interfere with the retractable cover, so you can still open or close it easily even with racks installed.

Quick Bed Access: Retractable Aluminum Cover

Getting to your gear is simple with the smooth, retractable design. Sealed ball-bearing rollers let the cover glide open and closed without binding or needing lubrication. You can lock it in any position along the rails to fit tall or long cargo, or close it fully for complete protection. The pop-up locking handle works with one hand and keeps your cargo hidden and secure when you’re away from the truck.

All-Weather Cargo Protection: Sealed and Overlapping Design

This cover keeps your bed dry and clean through rain, snow, and dust. Weather stripping and foam seals line all sides, and the panel overlaps the top of the tailgate so water can’t leak inside. Two drain tubes in the canister channel away any moisture, keeping the retracted cover dry. The spiral track system also prevents the panels from rubbing together, reducing wear over time.

Strong and Sleek: 1" Thick Aluminum Construction

The heavy-duty aluminum slats are 1" thick and can support up to 500 lbs of evenly distributed weight. They resist impacts, dents, and harsh weather, while the matte black finish is scratch resistant and won’t fade in the sun. The low-profile rails sit just 1" above the bed for a streamlined look that blends cleanly with the truck.

Simple Setup: No-Drill Clamp-On Installation

There’s no need for drilling or complicated tools. The side rails clamp directly onto the bed rails, and the preassembled canister makes setup fast and straightforward. Once in place, the angled canister bottom leaves more space underneath for gear, giving you a cover that’s both strong and smartly designed for everyday use.

Video Transcript for Complete Breakdown of the RetraxPRO XR Hard Tonneau Cover

Hi, Matt here with etrailer and today we're gonna be taking a look at the RetraxPro XR line of hard tonneau covers. You want to use our fit guide here in etrailer to make sure you're getting the right fit for your truck. Now this is gonna be a great option for you if you're looking for something that's gonna help keep the things in the back of your bed protected from the elements or if you wanna save one some extra gas and you want something that's gonna be custom fit. So let's check it out. So the tonneau cover we're gonna have today is gonna be retractable canister style. So what that means is it's just gonna roll up into itself and save you on a lot of space.

We're also gonna have an aluminum construction with a matte black finish to it. And what's nice about that aluminum construction is it's gonna be very durable and strong as compared to if you had any soft covers. If you had a soft covered tonneau cover, then someone could come by, just cut it open and access whatever you had in your bed. In our case today, this is gonna have the ability to lock so no one will be able to open up your tonneau cover. And if you have a locking tailgate like we do, then no one will be able to access any of it.

But let's open up so we can take a closer look at it. So to do that we're gonna have this box right here. This is gonna have a door on top of it. When you remove that door, you'll notice we have that lock core. That's what I was talking about earlier about this being able to lock.

And with it in the unlocked position, you can just press this button, it's gonna release your tonneau cover, and you'll have the ability to slide this back. Now in some cases, if you don't want to pull it all the way back, you just wanna pull it some, you would actually close this back down until it clicks into place and it'll lock it in this position. The reason why you might want that is you might have something that you want to access a lot. Something like if you had to tote right here, try to get some tools out of here, but you have other items in the back that you don't want getting wet or being out in the elements. And the way that this rolls is pretty smooth.

We're gonna have some ball bearings that go along this track on the inside that just slide right down until it goes all the way back to the canister. And what I also do like about this is we don't have any hinges or anything like that that can get gunked up over time or get damaged. So since this just rolls into place, you don't have to worry about a lot of extra things breaking. Continuing on with the rails, they're gonna sit up just about an inch on the back of our bed, which isn't bad at all. It's actually pretty low profile for how like robust and sturdy they are. And something that really sets it apart is that we're gonna have this T channel that runs through either the side of our rails. So what that T channel's gonna allow you to do is mount up any accessories or if you wanna put anything up like ladder racks or bed racks and you still want to use your tonneau cover, you're gonna have that ability and it's still gonna be compatible with a lot of our more popular brands on our website. You probably noticed when we're opening up our tonneau cover, we have this 5th wheel back here. That might be a concern of you if you have anything like that back here. And the total height that the 5th wheel we have today is gonna be a little bit less than 20 inches and we still have clearance to open up our tonneau cover. Now let's check out our canister. So like I was talking about earlier, what's nice about this is it doesn't take up a lot of room up behind our cab, so it's not blocking anything, but it is gonna take up a little bit of room in your bed. So we get some measurements. The first measurement I'm gonna get is gonna be the total length it adds, and that's gonna be about 13-1/2 inches in your bed. So the bed we have today is about 6-3/4 feet long. So you're gonna lose about a foot. Now the feature of the canister is it's gonna have a spiral design. So what that means is the way it rolls up into itself is it's not gonna making contact the entire time. So you don't have to worry about it rubbing against itself, making some wear and tear over time. And at the bottom we're gonna have some drain holes. You'll notice we'll have a tube that runs down. You're gonna have two of those in total. So the reason why we want to have drain tubes on our tonneau cover is because it's gonna prevent any water from pooling up inside and provide that water to run through so we don't have any rusting from occurring. Another thing that's gonna keep water out of here is gonna be our weather strips. We're gonna have one on the back of our canister so you don't have to worry about any water coming into your bed. Another area we're gonna have a weather strip is gonna be on our rails right underneath here, so you don't have to worry about water pooling up underneath them either. What's also really nice is this isn't gonna require any drilling for at least mounting it onto your vehicle. We're gonna be using these clamps. There's gonna be four in total, but it's just gonna grab on to these rails and your bed rails and secure it into place. But when you're ready to go, roll this out, just make sure it's unlocked and just pull it out. It shouldn't be very hard if you measured everything right and just make sure to lock it back up so it doesn't roll out on you. Overall, I think it's gonna be a great option for you if you are looking for something that's gonna be very secure where people won't be able to access underneath it and you're looking for something robust, sturdy, it's gonna have a clean finish to it too. And the fact that it's able to work with ladder racks and bed racks up to 500 pounds, it's gonna be great because you'll be able to load this up with a lot of items. If you are doing that, just make sure you check what your vehicle is capable of hauling. You can find that in your owner's manual. And your ladder racks and bed racks just make sure you know how much that can handle too. And that completes our look at the RetraxPro XR line of hard tonneau covers. Thanks for watching.

Install crossbars (sold separately) in the slotted rails of this heavy-duty cover to carry your bikes, kayaks, and more above your bed. Manually operate the cover with the pop-up, locking handle, which gives you the best security for your cargo.

by:

We purchased these to allow us to mount the rails to carry our bikes. So far, that’s worked out perfectly to use with the tonneau cover. The whole setup has been extremely simple for us to use while traveling.

by:

I have these tops on both of my trucks. Very durable and the powder coating is still in excellent condition.

by:

It is great. Took about 2 hours to install. You will need 2 people to put the assembled cover in the bed. I do have the multiplex tailgate and rain water will get into the bed because of the gap in the tailgate sections.

by:

Love the look and feel of the cover.

by:

Need I say more... :)

by:

Tonneau cover was delivered to my door with no damage. Hope to install it this weekend, weather permitting.

by:

It doesn’t lock into any position very well, either have all the way open or close. At time after I unlock it then I have to open the tail gate pull it to get it to unlock.

by:

Showed up quickly, this is the 3rd purchase from etrailer.com, they have great customer service, they know their products, prices are reasonable and they ship fast. I also purchased the Curt Hitch from them.

by:

Order was processed quickly and arrive in the specified shipping time. Easy two person install and fine tuning is an easy one person job. Great quality top and rugged. Perfect top for your pickup. Bed stays water tight so storing sleeping bags or luggage is no problem on long trips.

by:

Short version, LOVE IT!!! This was a lot more money than I wanted to spend but it was well worth it. While not water tight it is close. Easy to install, easy to operate. Does not make noise even on washboard roads. The loss of space by having a canister has not impacted me. But I saved the best for last. My daughter wanted one for her truck so I ordered another one. It was damaged in shipment and the best customer service representative in the world, Kimberly O, helped me out by getting me a new replacement quickly. I highly recommend this Tonneau Cover. I also got T-Slots and use my Rhino crossbars with the cover. No problems, just like they were made for each other.

by:

I had a solid tonneau before and liked it. Only problems with it were you could not drive with the cover up and it was a bear to remove even with the help of my wife. That truck was totaled by a drunk driver. So the replacement truck had to have an easier cover and wile I was at it, why not some racks as well?
It looks great! Fits perfectly and was a synch to install.
On the down side it is not completely dry and it did freeze up once in the winter. Other than that I do like it and gave it 4 stars

by:

Thanks etrailer. Ordered the Yakima Overhaul ladder racks and the Retrax tonneau cover. It’s the perfect solution for our camping/kayaking trips. Both products are solid and top notch. Installation was a breeze on my 20 Tundra.

by:

Nice product. Had shipping damage etrailer made it right.

by:

Really like this cover. Installation was fairly straightforward I was able to do the install myself but another person would have been helpful.

by:

The Retrax Pro XR cover performs and looks like new after 1 year. Took 2 of us to install and adjust properly. Very minimal water leakage around tailgate sometimes which is expected. Read reviews of water leaks but must be due to improper installation/adjustment. Very satisfied and looks great. 2024 GMC 2500HD Denali

Retrax Pro XR with Rhino Rack Cross Bar set for the XR

This has greatly simplified my bicycle transport. Before I was using separate ladder rack on back of trailer, and hitch rack on truck. Compared with my prior setup, here are the improvements:
-- removes ~75 lbs from back of my trailer
-- not dealing with separate truck and camper bike racks (esp hitch rack taking up bed room while towing)
-- don't have to unload bikes to check something on camper roof
-- bikes are easier to load (even with lifting)
-- cross bars detach in seconds and lift off for full bed access or car wash (the cross bar and bike rack assembly stores on hook in garage)
-- Don't have to remove and store bike seats (they extended well past right side of trailer when on ladder rack)
-- Bikes are more protected above tonneau cover than either on hitch rack or ladder rack.

by:

The Retrax Pro HR and Yakima Overhaul HD is a perfect combo and works well together.

by:

We really like the bed cover. Wish it was more waterproof but still really nice.

by:

Great fit. I had on on my old F150 and like the fit even more on my new Ram 2500.

by:

I couldn’t be happier with this tonneau cover for my F450. It shipped well, arrived quickly, and was packaged securely with no damage at all. Everything was organized and protected right out of the box.

Installation was surprisingly easy — clear instructions and no headaches. I had it mounted in no time, and it fit my F450 perfectly. The alignment was spot-on and the clamps secured tightly without any modifications needed.

The cover looks great, feels durable, and gives the truck a clean, finished appearance while keeping the bed fully protected. It opens and closes smoothly and feels solid once locked down.

If you’re looking for a tonneau cover for your F450, this is a great choice. Fast shipping, easy install, and excellent quality — 5 stars all the way!

by:

Quality and fit and finish seem strong. Straightforward install.
Would be 5 stars if the cover could close while using the Toyota tie-down system. The locking components knock up against the OEM tie-down brackets and stop the tonneau cover from closing.
Secondly, the OEM Toyota tie-down brackets cannot be used in the accessory T-slots as the OEM brackets have a larger T and cannot slide into the RetraxPRO accessory T-slots.

So,. I've paid for two different tie down systems , Toyota and Retrax and still don't have a solution. At my age I should have known better and done more research.

by:

Replaced my "soft" tonneau cover that was tearing, fading, and falling apart after 10 years of faithful service. Bought this tonneau cover because of the retractable operation and the aluminum construction. While it is obviously built tougher and the operation is smooth, it does have its downfalls (which I didn't think of too much at the time). One being the space that is lost in the front where all that retraction goes, I guess there is around 8 inches of height at the very front. Additionally, where it lays is slightly lower than the bed rails which takes away at least around an inch of height compared to my previous cover. This makes a big difference when getting tall containers and the like to fit. I do enjoy the elevated level of security the new tonneau cover offers, even though I had zero problems with the previous cover.

by:

Easy to order and find the correct fit. This is my third cover from this brand and my first with aluminum slats instead of polycarbonate due to a different truck size. Installation took about two hours from start to cleanup, and I needed a couple of neighbors to help lift it since the aluminum version is heavier. My previous polycarbonate covers didn’t leak and worked well, but they became slightly wavy over time. I expect the aluminum version to hold up better.

Installation note for 2026 Ram 3500 Dually: when positioning the clamps at each set of plastic allen screws had to adjust front and back clamps The front clamp near the cab bolts were a bit short due to the wider gap between bed and tonneau rail, so I removed the top back piece of the clamp to secure it properly. The lower supports did not fully reach the side walls, and the rear clamp near the tailgate required removing the lower support bolt to clear the cargo light. The middle clamps fit as intended with no adjustments. Something for the manufacture to consider as new trucks come out with different accessories.

Overall, I’ve been very happy with this brand over the years and am satisfied with this purchase.

by:

Was relatively simple to install and works as advertised. Not my first of these covers so I am a return customer and also new what to expect with installation. The PDF instructions are good, but not quite Lego or IKEA level. I haven't installed the Yakima HD Overhaul System yet, but do not expect any issues.

by:

I installed the RetraxPro XR tonneau cover myself and it wasn't bad at all. I had to do a lot of adjusting to get it perfectly straight and even. The hardest part was having my wife help me lift the cover in the truck after it was assembled. I wish they would include some kind of a reducer to be able to fit the drain hoses into the smaller holes in the bed of the truck so no drilling would have to be made. Other than that, great bed cover and can't wait to add T-slot accessories.

  • 2026 Ram 1500 Tonneau Cover Compatible with RamBox
Hey Jeffery, Instead of having to remove your factory rails, you can use RetraxPRO XR Hard Tonneau Cover - Retractable - Aluminum - Matte Black - Accessory T-Slots # RTX82XR on your 2026 Ram 1500. This model is specific to the Ram 1500 with RamBox installed and also is compatible with the multi-function tailgate, you won't have to alter much (if anything) on your truck to make this fit. I do see in the instructions that some bed liners would need to be trimmed for clearance, but that's...

Hi Mike; the Rhino-Rack that is typically paired with the RetraxPRO XR # RTX82XR is the Rhino-Rack Vortex Crossbars for Retrax XR and Mountain Top EVO-M Tonneau Covers # RRVA165B-RRRLT600. However, I'm not sure if this will interfere with the use of your RamBox system. These are 65" crossbars so I would measure to see if it will cross the point where the storage opens. Depending on your measurement and how far apart the T-slots in the cover are you may be able to use the Rhino-Rack Quick...

  • Retractable Tonneau Covers That Work with Powered Tailgates on Ram 1500
Hi Adam, That’s a great question, and you’re right to pause on it because this is one of those details that can make or break how everything works together. For most retractable covers, including many Pace Edwards options, the “not compatible with powered tailgates” note is accurate. The way those covers seal at the tailgate and how the rails sit can interfere with the power release, either preventing the tailgate from dropping cleanly or causing it to bounce back instead of opening smoothly. The...

To combat this you would need to install a Retrax cover with Explorer Rails like the RetraxPRO XR Hard Tonneau Cover # RTX82XR and use a ladder rack that can slide into the accessory slots like the Yakima OverHaul HD Adjustable Truck Bed Ladder Rack # Y01151-5855.
