When you need to haul large gear or tools, it’s nice not having to take your cover off. The BAKFlip MX4 folds up in sections so you can open as much or as little of the bed as you need. The integrated prop rods hold the cover upright when fully open, letting you drive with the bed completely clear. The low-profile, flush-mount design keeps the look clean and doesn’t block your view out the back window.
If you’re loading heavy boxes or climbing in the bed, you want a cover that can take real use. The MX4 uses 1/2" thick, rustproof aluminum panels with a premium density foam core for extra strength. It’s rated to handle up to 400 lbs of evenly distributed weight, so you can load gear on top when needed. The matte black finish resists scratches, scuffs, and UV damage, keeping it looking sharp through years of use.
Rain and snow are no match for the MX4’s solid build. Matte black rubber seals wrap around the edges, and an integrated drainage system channels water away from the bed. The rear seal lets you open or close the tailgate whether the cover is up or down, keeping your cargo dry without slowing you down.
With the tailgate closed and locked, the MX4 automatically latches each panel for a secure bed. You can flip open the cover quickly when you need access, then close it again knowing your gear is protected. The built-in buckle system keeps the cover steady in folded or upright positions, so everything stays locked in place while driving.
You don’t need special tools to get this cover installed. The frame rails clamp inside the bed rails for a clean, no-drill fit, and bolts secure the front hinge rail for extra stability. The aircraft-grade aluminum rails with a black powder coat finish add to the durability and tie the whole setup together. This is a cover built to work as hard as your truck, season after season.

Hi, I'm Daniel with etrailer, and today we're going to take a look at and I'm going to show how to install the BAKFlip MX4 hard tonneau cover. This tonneau cover is one of the premium ones we have on our site. It's basically going to turn your truck bed into a huge trunk. And these are really nice because it's going to keep water out as well as would-be thieves. So it's going to give you that peace of mind. All your stuff in here is going to be nice and safe.
This cover has a ton of cool features that others don't. The first being you can open your trunk with this fully closed and vice versa. Some, you have to close your trunk before you close your tonneau cover. So I can get this open here and close it without a problem. A lot of the other ones, there's a seal in the way and it could damage it, but this one there's no issue there.
And to open this up, you can do it from either side, but there's a pull cord. You pull that and it'll just flip. Each section will have a pull cord. And another nice feature is you can drive around with this folded up. So if you're hauling around really heavy stuff that sticks up above your tonneau cover, most of the time you'll have to take your hard tonneau cover completely off, which is a huge hassle.
But with this one, there's a prop rod and you can loosen this knob, slide this down, tighten it back up. Just do that on both sides and you're good to go. You can drive around with this. And they did design this so each section would be small enough so it folds up and you can still see your third taillight. So again, when you're driving around, you can have it folded up and still view that taillight.
If you are planning on driving around with it folded up and you might be worried that this vibrating against your cab might damage it, but they do give you durable thick pads you can stick on here. So that won't be an issue. You can also fold it down once and there's clips. So you can clip these on both sides, tighten them down, and that'll keep this from vibrating if you want to drive around with this in this position. This kit is really nice because it's super easy to install. These side rails will just pop on and then you're going to have three clamps per side. You just want to tighten those down and then you get this inner section in place and that's really it. Now another thing I want to mention is when this is folded up, it's going to be super flush to your bed. So this really only sticks up probably less than half an inch. So it's going to be nice clean sleek design. This is also super durable. It's aluminum panels and this can support up to 400 pounds evenly distributed. So if you're at a job site, you maybe want to throw some tools up here or even some plywood, this can handle a lot of weight. But like I said, this is going to be your premium option, but the neighbor who owns this truck, he likes it so much. He actually had three of these. He originally had an F-150 that he got, but he traded in for a F-250, got the same version, and now he's got an F-150 again and got it again. So it's definitely a great tonneau cover to get. Now if you have any further questions about this product or anything else for your truck, please feel free to reach out and I'll be happy to point in the right direction. And like I said, install is super easy on this. Won't take you long at all, but if you don't have the time or tools or space to do this in, you can check out our installer locator and we can find an installer local to you to get whatever you need installed. If you want to do this yourself, follow along and in this video, I'll walk you through the process. Starting off, you want to put the weather seal on the front of the truck. You just want to stick this down. It has a sticky backing on it, and you want to clean this really well with alcohol. And sometimes this rough texture, it's really hard to stick to. So I have sanded it down before with a file or sandpaper just to make it a little bit more flat just where you need to stick this. We can get our side rails up in place and you'll get this over the lip of your bed and push this all the way forward. So your drain tube is going to be facing forward, just want to push it all the way towards your bulkhead. We'll get our clamps on. I already got the front two. We want to get this one about eight to 12 inches from the front. I got that tightened up. And then for the middle one, I got that one roughly in the middle. If you have an eight-foot bed, you are going to need two of these in the middle. And what you're looking for is you want this rail to be perfectly flush with your bed, so you don't want this tilted down or tilted up. But how you get these clamps on, it's pretty straightforward. All you have to do is go in kind of at an angle kind of like this and then go down. I'll clip in like that. For the back part of our clamp, it's going to have the side with the long bend and you want the teeth facing in. I'll get that put in place. That's in the lip of our other bracket. Then I'll take our bolt with a flat washer, get this tightened in. There are filler strips that come in the kit and these can just stick onto the rail. We just want to stick these one closest to the tailgate, the other closest to the front, and then one in the middle. I'll use a 13-millimeter socket and get this snug down. And we can get all of these torqued down to these specs in the instruction. Now we can attach the drain tube on the part of the end of our rails and you are going to have to run this out. So if you don't have a plastic cover you can remove, you are going to have to drill a 7/16 hole. So our neighbor doesn't want this installed. He doesn't want a hole in his bed because he doesn't have any of those plastics to remove. But the best place is probably right here. You can just run this down right there or there is a hole right here, you could open this up a little bit, and run it right next to it. For our clips, we can get those installed and there's pre-drilled holes in here and you can just put your screw in, use a Phillips head. Don't use any power tools, just use a hand drive on this and get that tightened down. On the backside, there's going to be some inserts you'll just have to put in. That's what these thread into. These slots are going to be for our clamp. It's going to be a knob attached to a carriage bolt. I'll slide this in, and this part with the groove, this is going to go on our rail. That'll allow us to tighten this down. So I'll get this on both sides. We can take our tonneau cover. I'm going to lift this in place. We want to push this forward until this weather seal completely covers the front and you can always adjust this front and back a little bit later if needed. You're going to have more pads that come in the kit and you can stick this on this part where it contacts your cab. So just lean this forward and put them wherever you want. And we're ready to put this bracket and this groove on the lip of our side rails and I'll just tighten this down. With both sides tightened up, we can unfold this, make sure it clicks into your rails. And we'll shut our tailgate and you want this to be covered so water doesn't get in there. And if it's not enough, you can always scoot this back a little bit to how you like it. And that does it for look at our MX4 hard tonneau cover. Thanks for watching.

The BAKFlip after 2 years is still functioning great. I fixed the curling cushion by applying some strong adhesive to the spots that had detached, taped it in place and let cure for a couple of days. That solved that issue. Would continue to recommend the BAKFlip to others.

You mentioned that the glue holding the pads are failing. I wanted to see if you would be able to send a picture to show the locations.

The cover is still excellent and keeps our items dry and secure on those road trips. I stand by my initial review and still wish the weatherstripping would stick the the spray in liner better but its only been a minor annoyance that hasnt resulted in any water getting into the bed.

Thanks for the great feedback! We're glad you're enjoying the tonneau cover and that being able to use almost the entire truck bed when it's open has been such a big plus. It's also nice knowing your gear stays secure when you lock the tailgate. We appreciate you mentioning the clamps too—that kind of feedback is always helpful. Thanks again, and we hope you keep enjoying your new cover!
