Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/ESP functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are great for giving you a little extra traction in the snow. But if you live somewhere where you experience heavy snow often, you'll definitely want something more heavy duty than cables. Because these cable chains are lightweight and don't take up a lot of storage space, they are also perfect for keeping in your trunk if you occasionally travel through areas that require you to have chains on hand.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new cable chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow cables that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile cables can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Cable Chains

Installing cable chains is easy.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the cables.

Cross cable connections have a smooth side that goes against the tire

2. Where each cross cable attaches, you'll notice there is a smooth side and one with an edge. Make sure the smooth side faces in to sit against your tire's sidewall as you drape the cables over your tire.

Feed the cable through the connection loop

3. On the front of the tire, feed the cable through the connection loop until it's tight, then feed the extra cable through the second loop to keep it from flapping as you drive. Repeat this on the backside of the tire.

Optional rubber adjusters ensure a tight fit

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) are recommended to help ensure a tight fit. Connect these to the front side of the cable in a star pattern. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

  • Correct Konig Self-Tensioning Tire Chains for a 2014 Subaru Legacy with P225/50R17 Tires
The correct Konig Self-Tensioning Tire Chains for a 2014 Subaru Legacy with P225/50R17 tires is part # TH00023100. These chains have a self tensioning mechanism to maintain the correct level of tightness, nylon bumpers to protect the vehicle's wheels, and a class s rating for the best clearance. They will need to be installed on the front tires only. Please note, the owner's manual may have other stipulations for using tire chains you'll want to review before use.

The Thule CS-10 tire chain has an external quick release system, they are self tensioning (just put them on and go), they have 10 millimeters clearance inside and on the tread, they feature a diamond pattern with icebreaker reinforcements for added grip, they have anti-scratch nylon bumpers to protect vehicle rims, and they have a color-coded assembly design. The CG-9 chains are also self tensioning, but do require one stop to fit the chain properly. They have 9 millimeters of clearance...

For any vehicle, to know it is safe to use tire chains you will want to consult the owner's manual. Some cars can use chains only on one axle; others may be able to use tire chains only on specific tire sizes. The final authority on the question of tire chains is always the auto maker. The Glacier # PW1034 cable chains are a fit for 205/55-17 tires and are Class-S compatible, which means they are ver low profile for vehicles with limited space in the tire well. When using snow tire chains you will always need to make sure you use a snow chain that is designed for your particular size tire. • Tire Traction Device for 2020 Subaru Impreza With 205/55-16 Tires
Spring chains are really just another name for a traction device that does not actually use metal chains, although nobody actually calls them spring chains so Subaru's designation in the owners manual for these devices is somewhat odd. Nonetheless, it can be the law in some areas to have some type of traction device, so if that the case for you there are a couple of options I recommend for your 2020 Subaru Impreza, assuming you have the standard 205/55-16 tires. Using snow chains on 4 tires would provide more traction than if you were to use snow chains on 2 tires, but whether or not it is safe to do so is entirely up to your vehicle manufacturer. Some vehicles are only permitted to use chains on either the front or the back tires depending on clearance and if there are any components that are liable to become damaged. • Snow Chain Recommendation for a 2005 Honda Accord with 205/60R 16 size Tires
The chains that feature actual chain instead of cable should provide you with more traction than the cable snow chains, therefore giving you better handling and control. However, since your owners manual specifically says to use low clearance cable style chains you should stick with their recommendation and get that style snow chain, otherwise you may damage your 2005 Honda Accord. I recommend you get Glacier Tire Chains for the 2005 Accord by Honda, part # PW1034.
