Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if they might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are great for giving you a little extra traction in the snow. But if you live somewhere where you experience heavy snow often, you'll definitely want something more heavy duty than cables. Because these cable chains are lightweight and don't take up a lot of storage space, they are also perfect for keeping in your truck if you occasionally travel through areas that require you to have chains on hand.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's user manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Cable Chains

Installing these chains is simple.

Lay chains on the ground.

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.

Drape chain over tire.

2. Drape the chain over the tire or lay the chain out and drive onto it.

Connect cable behind tire.

3. Reach around to the back of the tire and fasten the rear side cable by running the end with the metal stops through the eye of the hook on the opposite end.

Secure excess cable.

4. Run any excess side cable through the metal clip.

Repeat around front.

5. Repeat this process on the front side of the tire.

Install rubber adjusters

6. Drive forward 1 car length, then check the chain and hand tighten it again if needed.

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) are recommended to help ensure a tight fit. Connect these to the front side of the cable in a star pattern. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chains, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Titan Cable Snow Tire Chains Review

Colin: Hey, everyone. It's Colin here at etrailer, and today, we're going to take a look at the line of Titan Chain cable snow tire chains. Now, there's a variety of sizes to fit your specific tire, so make sure you enter your year, make, model of your vehicle in our fit guide, and enter your tire size. It'll lead you to the one that'll correctly fit your tire. Now, it's always a good idea to keep a set of chains in your vehicle, and with these cable chains, these are something that's going to be a really good investment for if you live in an area where during the winter months you're only going to be getting snow or ice a couple of times over the winter months. These are going to just give you that extra traction through those lighter conditions. Now, if you live in an area where over the winter months you're getting really heavy snow or ice storms a lot during the winter months, I'd recommend maybe looking into a more heavy-duty set of steel chains. Titan Chain makes plenty of those, and we have them available here at etrailer, but again, back to these cable chains.

These are going to do very well through those lighter snow and ice conditions. These chains are also going to be a really economical choice, so you can have that safety net in the back of your vehicle in case you ever we're to encounter one of those lighter snow and ice situations. To be honest, with those set of steel chains, if you try to use those in lighter conditions, it's going to make for a very rough ride. It's going to wear down on the chain much quicker than these steel rollers will. The steel rollers, along with the low profile chain, make for a very smooth ride for having a set of chains on your tire. Now, each tire chain isn't specifically designed for one size tire. Each set of chains is going to fit a variety of tire sizes in a range.

Now, you can see that they're pretty loose on our tire right now, and we do have them really as tight as we can go, but that's where these rubber adjusters come in handy. These are sold separately here at etrailer. I highly recommend picking up a set if you're going to grab some cable chains as well. What these are going to do is pull down and keep tension on your chains and keep them snug against your tire, so you get a much smoother ride and keep getting that good traction. Let's go and show you how to install them real quick. It's really pretty simple.

You can see how it's pulling on each side to help make sure we get that traction that we need. You can see right there. Now, our chains are much tighter on our tire, so we're ready to hit the road. Now, the base of the chain isn't actually a chain. It's this really durable cable, and this cable is making up, like I said, the entire base all the way around and the cross-links. The cross-links are going to be kind of covered with all these low-carbon steel rollers.

Like I said, the roller makes for a very smooth ride, gives you that extra traction that you need, and the low-carbon steel construction is going to be very tough and durable. It's also going to resist rust and corrosion. These chains are also going to be classed as certified, meaning they're great for vehicles with limited wheel well clearance, which isn't necessarily the case for our SUV. Right here, you can see I've got plenty of space, but for smaller vehicles like sedans, maybe even vehicles where you bought some bigger tires, and it's taking up more space in the wheel well, these are going to be a great option. The chains do have a ladder pattern design, meaning they're forming these cross-links all throughout the chain. They are going to be very effective for starts and stops, and you do want to keep in mind that they do have a speed rating of 30 miles per hour, so just make sure you're keeping it slow out there and staying safe. We do get this nice durable case that makes for very easy storage when they're not in use. You can just roll them up, throw them in here, and then toss it in the back of your vehicle. Now, whenever you get a new set of chains, whether it's these Titan Cable chains or any other sets you might get, I always recommend getting it out of the bag or the case, practicing installing them on your vehicle before you go out into the weather. If you're in your driveway or in your garage, practice using them so that when you get out in those situations, if you run into any problems, you'll know how to work through them. Now, I'll go ahead and walk you through that install process right now. Now, the first thing you want to do is lay your cable chains out, and just check them over for any tangles or kinks or twists. Get all those out. After you've used them a couple of times, it's never a bad idea just to go ahead and check for any broken links or rollers. With these being new chains, and if you've only used them a few times, then you're probably not going to have to worry about that. What we'll do is just grab them and then drape them over the top insides of our tire. Now, here on the backside, we need to make our first connection. That's just feeding this cable into the channel right there. We want to get it as tight as we can. We got to the second one, and that should do for now. If we go to the front and we find that it's still a little loose, we can come back and tighten it up a little more. Let's go to the front side and do the same thing.Just feed it through. We're at the second one right there, which is the same number we did on the backside, but if we want to, we can go one more up. That seems to do the trick and keep our chains snug. See if we can go to the fourth. Looks like we can, so that does get our chains a little bit tighter. However, per the instruction, we want to make sure we're staying within one. So from here, you have the option of going back to the third or going back to the backside and adjusting it, whichever way you feel more comfortable with. We're going to go ahead, go to the backside, and make that adjustment. Now, if you decided to get the optional rubber tensioner, go ahead and throw that on as well. Then from there, go ahead and repeat this process for the other side. Once you've done all that, you're going to be ready to hit the road.Well, I hope this information helped you guys out, but that's going to do it for our look at the line of Titan Chain cable snow tire chains.

Order 2 pairs for my car, got 2 different cables, one set blue the other set green. You can tell instantly because the bags are blue and green and oddly the different colors weight different amounts. Emailed customer service to get cables that match and they said that the label invoice number are the same on both bags, So it's the same product. So if you don't care that you can get 2 different colors from ordering 2 sets in the same order you can try for these.

by:

The bag is in rough shape. Torn handle, covered in stains and dirt. Cable rollers have rust all over them. Entire kit looks used

by:

I’m going to write these as a one before I even use them because each trailer sent me a used set. This is unacceptable that they would sell me something brand new and send a use set the bag is all beat up. They are clearly marks on the chains as they have been used before, I’ve ordered products from them before and they’ve never done this to me. In addition on the website, it says that these fit the size of tire that I have 275, 7018, but on the label on the side of the bag, it does not list that size.

by:

Now that the holidays and medical scares are over. The chains came sooner than expected. I was able to fit them to the trailer tires! So we are ready for more snow! I read that vehicles with trailers over 10,000 lbs have to have chains for one axle of the trailer, (when chains are required). Hopefully I won't have to use them!
THANK YOU ETRAILER!

Just received my chains yesterday. I have to say, first of, customer service is EXCELLENT! I had questions on which chains were best for my SUV and I was promptly responded with suggestions and links to videos. I went with these tire cables for my 2015 Dodge Durango SXT Plus. There was question about clearance issues with brake lines on the Durango and these seem to be very low profile and made for lower clearance. The price was right too. I did a dry install today and it was a breeze. Took way longer to fold these back up and put back into the storage bag! Lol! (That's not these chains fault, it's user error...) I took some pictures but note it was my first time installing tire cables so I'm going to have to center them a bit more. I purchased the Titan chain multi arm rubber chain adjusters and they did make a difference on how snug the cables fit, so I would recommend them. We only plan on using them on very rare occasions when we venture up the mountain, so in sure if you live where it snows all the time, you will probably look at higher prices chains, but I think these are perfect for the occasional use. I will update after our Big Bear trip if we use them to reflect actual use. Thank you etrailer, they also upgraded my shipping to get here a couple days earlier just because... that was amazing!

Cables fit my Bronco Sasquatch LT 315/70R-17 tires just fine. Clearance appears to be okay. Did use tensioners. No opportunity to use them yet. Great price and fast safe shipping.Website useful and informative.

by:

These Cable Chains were the easiest to install of any others I've had. The instructions that came with the chains weren't great, but I watched the video on etrailer which was very straight forward. I watched the video 2 times then took the chains out of the bag and had both on in less than 5 minutes.

by:

Please discontinue this product, putting these ( rolling cylinders, NOT CHAINS ) on my tires, was like trying to walk on roller skates, they absolutely do not work.

by:

4 stars only because I just got them and have not used them. Nice bag, looks like a great pair of emergency cable chains for that rare snow/ice storm.

by:

The chains went on easily in dry conditions to practice installing. I have not used them on snow yet. I only expect to use them for short periods of snowy conditions on my Ford Transit. And I liked the price.

by:

Chains do not come with lever fastener. Wish I had known that before purchasing. Great quality chains. Great customer service.

Purchased Titan Tire Chains for Wide Base Tires - Ladder Pattern - Square Link part TC3229S for a 2018 Ram 2500 with OEM 275/70/R18 tires. These are great chains and very heavy-duty for wide base tires. I mounted them on the rear axle of the Ram and discovered the chain in close proximity to the P-Brake cable, too close for my comfort. I believe the wide base chains are too wide for these OEM tires and fit was pretty loose.
One could gain more clearance near the E-Brake by attaching the inside hook to the end (last) link. Then using a chain a tightener do your best to take up all the outside slack. I just was not comfortable with the overall fit so I send these chains back. Very painless return made easy by etrailer because they emailed a return UPS label.

After reviewing tech info and reviews I purchased Titan Alloy Tire Chains - Diamond Pattern - Square Link part TC2533 for the 2018 Ram 2500. These are regular duty and a better fit. These chains offer a lot more clearance for the P-Brake cable. They are a cleaver design, have great carrying case and are fairly quick to install. I have not purchased winter tires for this vehicle so the Ram need chains to pull a travel trailer up and down our snow-covered road.

by:

This is my 4th pair of tire cables. Never have used any of them, just carry them in case. Maybe I should stop buying different vehicles, lol.

by:

Got chains delivered sooner than estimated. Chains are a great product for the price, and performed great while driving up in the Big Bear Mountains.

by:

Like brining an umbrella. When you have it, you won't need it

by:

Haven’t used them yet and hope I don’t have to but they are good to have in the tru.

by:

Titan Chain Cables are great quality and so easy to use. We were able to intuitively put them on and take off quickly. Etrailer has the best prices I've seen after researching.

Also, they have the BEST customer service, specifically Jane S. & Tammie P. I was not familiar with cables and our Subaru had specific clearance requirements. They made sure I received the correct type, fit and clearance for my car.

We highly recommend!

by:

Easy to order, better than promised delivery, well packaged and excellent quality product. Purchased for a mountain drive next weekend, so haven’t installed yet, but will do in a few days.

by:

When I put the tire chains we purchased at etrailer on our Subaru Ascent, the inside fastener part of the chain rubbed against the shock absorber. We Googled it and this happens and would wear a hole in the shock absorber casing after a hundred miles or so. etrailer refused to refund our $$ because it was over 6 months from the date of purchase. We hadn't used them until we got enough snow to need them. I wouldn't recommend buying from etrailer but if you do make sure to test drive the chains as soon as you get them so you can return them if necessary. I can tell you for sure that etrailer tire chains will not work on Subaru Ascent.

by:

Did the job and got me to the mountains!
Here’s
a pic from Sequoia National Park.
Would definitely use with the bungee cord type tire chain adjusters to help keep the chains tight.

by: 11/02/2023

Great product. Works perfectly, easy to install and strong enough to handle normal snow driving.

by:

Could have died without these lol.

by:

I generally do not provide reviews but ordering, processing, and receiving was seemless and I would recommend etrailer to anyone. Great to see such good customer service.

by:

I haven't had to use the chains in snow yet, but I have checked and they fit my tires well. The only confusion is that the instructions refer to a lever for tightening the chains when attaching them, but there is no lever. So there is no difference between the chains on the inside of the tire and the outside of the tire.

by:

Easy to put on tires but difficult to place back inside carry bag after use. Would be nice if carry bag was larger.
