Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/ESP functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are great for giving you extra traction in deep snow. But if you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with square or V-bar links that can really bite into the ice for more traction.

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new snow chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. These can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Snow Chains

Installing tire chains is easy.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.

Cross chain connections should have the prongs facing away from the tire

2. Drape the chain over your tires, making sure that the prongs attaching the cross chains to the side chains face away from your sidewalls. Drive forward about half a tire rotation.

Connect chains on the back and front of the tire

3. On the back of the tire, pull the chain tight and hook the ends together. Repeat this on the front of the tire, then clamp the lever to fasten extra chain links and keep them from flapping as you drive.

Use tool to tighten cams on the sidewall chains

4. Insert the included tool into the cam and twist to tighten the sidewall chain. Twist as many cams as it takes to get a tight fit.

Rubber adjusters ensure a tight fit

5. Drive forward 2-3 vehicle lengths and recheck the chains tension. Tighten any loose cams.

If needed, rubber adjusters (sold separately) can be used to get a tight fit. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Glacier Twist Link Snow Tire Chains with Cam Tighteners Installation - 2017 Lexus RX 350

Speaker 1: Today on our 2017 Lexus RX 350 we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Glacier Twist-Link Snow Tire Chains, part number PWH2229SC. Keep in mind, we are going to be installing these on tire size 235/55-R20. It's going to have an H pattern twist-link design. It's going to give you great starts and stops in snow and ice. It's going to be constructed of a low carbon steel, and these are designed for highway use. However, they are not intended for off-road applications. One thing I like about these chains, it's going to have Cams to help maximize the tension while the chain's on the tire.

It also has an included tool to help us take out that slack, and these come in a quantity of two. IF you'd like to purchase an extra set, just use the same part number. If your vehicle is an all wheel drive vehicle, it is recommended that you put chains on all four tires. However, if you're only going to use two, it is recommended that you put them on the front tires. Now, it's a good idea not to exceed the maximum speed of 30 miles per hour while these chains are installed. First thing you want to do is you're going to lay out your chains and make sure you don't have any kinks or knots.

Next, you want to make sure your cams are facing out, and if you notice at the end of our cross link, you're going to have a hook-style connection point. You want to make sure that this open end is facing up, so when it's installed, it's not touching the tire.Next, we're going to drape our chain over our tire. We're going to grab it from this side. Over like this. Next, we'll move around to the back of the tire.

Connect the links. You just wanna make sure you get them as snug as possible. Now we'll take our hook, we'll hook it in, I'd say, probably this center one, third one in. We're good. Then we'll move back to the front of the tire.

We're gonna try to match the link that we did in the back, give or take one. Now we can flip our lever over and hook our extra link on.Now we'll take our included tool and we're gonna start by turning our cams. Keep in mind you don't have to use all of them. Start with one till it gets tight. We're good. Now you're gonna repeat that same process on the other side of the vehicle. Then you wanna get in your vehicle, drive it forward a couple feet, check the tension, and make any adjustments necessary. Now it's not required, but it is recommended to use a rubber tensioner to maximize the tension on the chain while it's installed. You can pick one of these up using part number PW105. You'll notice the hooks. You want to make sure the hooks are facing out away from the tire. We're just gonna go around and hook them on. Then again, you're gonna wanna repeat that same thing on the other side of the vehicle. That'll do it for a look at and installation of the Glacier Twist-Link Snow Tire Chains, part number PWH2229SC on our 2017 Lexus RX 350.

The order was handled very fast, and I got the snow chains in no time.
Those are chains for big vehicle, they are heavy and sturdy.
Comparing to diamond pattern chains that I had perilously, the new chains almost impossible to tangle. It takes just 30 seconds to lay them correctly on the ground.
In my garage I put them as instructed in the video on etrailer web page. But in real life scenario, on highway shoulder, I would probably lay them down on the ground, drive 2-3 feet forward and try to close the chains on top of the wheel (versus crawling on the ground and trying to reach behind the wheel).
The tension system is simple and intuitive. Comparing again to diamond pattern chains, this tension system is much more robust.

The only downside of those chains, they miss caring bag. The bag they where shipped in, has no zipper, and cannot be closed once open.

Great chains! Get them on as tight as possible with all the cams facing out, drive a short way and then tighten the cams where needed. Very easy install and the grip is excellent - got us safely through the snowstorm that just hit Tahoe.

Etrailer's online ordering website failed to accept my snow chain order, but my phone order was handled very efficiently, and I got useful advice while on the phone. I probably won't use the snow chains for a while, hopefully never, but they look fine. Delivery was fast and price good.

Delivered the wrong size chains. I ordered 255/55/20 I received chains for 15 inch rims. Dealing with a Phillip H at your company no positive solutions.

by:

Had to pull the chains out for the first time last month when my 1991 F-250 got held up on a very slick and steep ice covered road. They fit over my LT215/85R-16 Firestone Winterforce LT E tires very nicely and on the first try with no problems. I have only used chains on smaller cars before this but these installed very easily with the caming links and included tool for tightning. These chains seem to have a good range of adjustment and were also easy to remove. They seem sturdy and well made and of course traction was very solid once they were installed. Highly recommended.

by:

Great tire chains! Good quality, good price, and excellent service!!

by:

Excellent chains on 2005 GMC Sierra. Cam Locks are good but you really need to use a tire bungee or equivalent to pull the chains tighter. I use wire ties for the extra length of chain on the inside and outside firewall. Turns the truck into a total snow beast, I have yet to get stuck and have never used the winch I bought for that purpose.

  • Difference Between Pewag and Glacier Tire Chains 2229SC
So Pewag and Glacier are both made by the same company with the Pewag brand being the premiere line and the Glacier line being more budget friendly. The # PWE2229SC is the Pewag version is made from a stronger steel and is reversible which means that it's going to last considerably long whereas the Glacier # PWH2229SC will fit and function the same but won't last nearly as long.

  • Tire Chains for a 2016 Toyota Highlander with 245/55-19 Tires
According to the owner's manual for your 2016 Toyota Highlander, tire chains can only be installed on the front two tires and cannot be greater than 3 mm thick on the side chain and 4 mm thick on the cross chain. The Glacier Twist Link Snow Tire Chains with Cam Tighteners part # PWH2229SC will fit your 245/55-19 tires but have a side chain thickness of 5.9 mm and a cross chain thickness of 5.5 mm therefore, I cannot recommend you use these tire chains. • Tire Chain Recommendation for a 1999 Chevy Silverado With Chrome Rims
Snow chains and even cables have metal parts that could potentially scratch your chrome wheels. It is more likely that scratches will occur during the installation process because when moving the chains are, ideally, in the correct position away from the rims and centrifugal force and tension will keep them in place. Probably the safest bet in terms of keeping your chrome rims pristine is to use something like the Glacier V-Bar Snow Tire Chains with Cam Tighteners, # PWH2229SC. With the...
