These chains are great for giving you extra traction in deep snow. But if you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with square or V-bar links that can really bite into the ice for more traction.
If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new snow chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.
We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.
You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. These can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.
Installing tire chains is easy.
1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.
2. Drape the chain over your tires, making sure that the prongs attaching the cross chains to the side chains face away from your sidewalls. Drive forward about half a tire rotation.
3. On the back of the tire, pull the chain tight and hook the ends together. Repeat this on the front of the tire, then clamp the lever to fasten extra chain links and keep them from flapping as you drive.
4. Insert the included tool into the cam and twist to tighten the sidewall chain. Twist as many cams as it takes to get a tight fit.
5. Drive forward 2-3 vehicle lengths and recheck the chains tension. Tighten any loose cams.
If needed, rubber adjusters (sold separately) can be used to get a tight fit. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.
Quick Tips:
To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Today on our 2016 Ford Explorer, we'll be doing a test fit on the Glacier Twist Link snow tire chains, part number PWH2229SC. That's tire size 245-55/R18. These Glacier tire chains are intended for on road use only. They feature twist links, so they're going to provide you with adequate traction on snow and ice. The ladder pattern is very effective during starts and stops. It's going to help you get the bite you need to get going.
The cams make installation and tightening very easy compared to most chains. The tool is included. They have a maximum speed rating of 30 miles per hour and they come in a quantity of two. Let's go ahead and show you how easy they are to get installed. We're going to be putting tire chains on the front tires of our Ford Explorer here today because it is driven by the front axle. To begin our test fit, I've gone ahead and laid the chain out.
It's a good idea to make sure there's no twists, kinks or any tangles in them. You also need to be sure that the hooks here, the open side, is facing up, and that the cams here are in the loose position, so this position here. Now, let's go ahead and drape the chain over our tire. It's a good idea to make sure that it's even on both sides. An easy way to check that, grab the front, feel around to the back and to make sure it's about the same.
Then we can finish draping around our tire and we'll hook up the back first. Here on the back side what we want to do is take our hook here, and our links here, and connect them together. We don't want to hook too many of the links together because then we won't be able to connect the front side evenly. Let's go ahead and hook the third link. We can always adjust it later. Now we'll hook the front side. Here on the front side, we're going to do the same thing.
Only this time, we've got a lever that's going to help us tighten it down. Let's go ahead and hook as many links as we can. It looks like it's going to be the fourth one. It helps to push the link all the way down the lever. You can easily fold the lever back, and then we're going to hook it into the keeper link here. With the excess chain, we can either cut it off or use a zip tie to tie it up. Now we can take our included tool and tighten down each one of the cams. We'll start right here at the top. We'll just put it in and then turn it. You can see how it's starting to tighten up the chain. You don't have to tighten up all the cams, just until your chain is nice and tight. We've got one more to do here, let's go ahead and try. As you can see, we've used all the cams. The chain is nice and tight and we can go ahead and repeat the same process for the other side. Once you get both sides done, if you'd like to, you can pick up a rubber adjuster. It's not required, but it can help keep the chain tight around your tire while you're on the road. You can pick up two with part number PW105. They're very easy to install. Be sure that the hook is facing away from the tire. We'll just hook it on top. Go directly across and then just work your way around. It is a good idea to drive a short distance, stop, get out, check to see if you need to make any adjustments. That's going to complete our test fit of the Glacier Twist Link snow tire chains with cam tighteners, part number PWH2229SC on our 2016 Ford Explorer.
