Video Transcript for Pewag 7mm LT Studded Truck Chains Installation - 2022 Toyota Tacoma

Hey, it's Ethan here at etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install these pewag Twist Links with the studs snow tire chains on our 2022 Toyota Tacoma. These are gonna be on tire size 265/70 R16. Make sure you check the fit guide on etrailer.com to get the right fit for your tire. Also, we have them on the rear axle as per our owner's manual. Make sure you're checking your owner's manual to get them on the right tire for you as well.

But these chains are gonna be some of the most aggressive that you can get. They're made for off-road purposes only whether that be forestry or ice road trucking or maybe you have some property and you just need a little bit more grip out in the mud. These are gonna be a good option for you so let's check 'em out. What really sets these apart again are these studs. They're seven millimeters long and they're gonna be built for biting into those off-road conditions that we just talked about.

They're super aggressive and you're definitely gonna feel this what you're driving. But for these purposes, you're probably not gonna be super worried about that. They are in a ladder pattern, which means they go straight across our tire parallel to one another. So again, they're gonna help you get that initial bite in whatever conditions that you're in and they're gonna be really high profile, so they're gonna be very bumpy but you're not gonna be worried about that. The chains are made of an alloy steel construction so they're gonna be durable and they're gonna be able to hold up to those off-road applications that we talked about.

There are also these cam tensioners. There are three of them in the chains which are gonna help you get that initial tension and help you get that really snuck fit but they're not gonna keep tensioning as you drive. So we do recommend picking up one of these rubber tensioners and we show you how to install that in the install portion but it's just gonna help you maintain some of that tension while you're bumping and the chains are shifting around. The chains do come two to a set and this light weight sort of plasticy, maybe nylon-styled bag. As you can see here with those studs we already have a hole poking through ours.

So if you do get these chains we definitely would recommend upgrading this to something that's gonna be more durable, maybe like a plastic tote or something that's gonna be able to keep the chains more secure and to keep the weather out. But overall, the install process, honestly for our tire size was a little bit tricky just finding the right way to set the links up in the front and the back. Not super terrible, but you can check out how we did that right now. To install the chains, the first thing we want to do is lay them out flat. We just wanna make sure that nothing is caught or twisted or tangled. We also want to make sure that we have these cams on the side facing us cuz we'll have to interact with those and we wanna make sure the chains are facing the right way. With these chains, it should be pretty easy to identify which way you want them to face. So obviously we want these studs against or away from the tread of our tire. We'd rather have this flat part making contact with our tire, but these hoops are another way to check. Again, we want this flat side, not this hooks but with the V bars it should be easier to tell. From here, we can grab towards the back one of these sets with the links and start draping them over our tire. Just go slow even though we have a good amount of wheel well clearance, we don't wanna scratch anything up with those aggressive V bars so just take our time, get them in place and then we can make our first connection on the backside. For that connection, we'll just fit this hook into one of the loose links on this side. Seems like we have a decent amount of slack here so I'm gonna go for the middle one. We still have the front connection and those cams to tighten up so there's a good chance we might have to come back and adjust that in a second if we need to. Now we'll do the same thing on the front side. We'll fit one of these loose links into our hook. We have a decent amount of room over here so I might go for the fourth one and I'm probably gonna actually have to tighten up that connection on the back before we start getting these cams. So we have our connection here now. I had to go back and forth from the front and the back sort of just tweaking which link I have the front and the back on to try to make sure we have an equal amount of chain on the front and the back so you might have to play with that too. But for now we can use this provided lever tool and we can start tightening down these cams. So I'm gonna start with this one down here and we'll just rotate that the other way I believe. Yes, so counterclockwise, we'll go around to the top, same thing and we should be able to get this third one as well, just like that. With the links set up the way we have them and all the cams tightened, the chains are really nice and secure on there, but we still recommend picking up one of the rubber tensioners just because we do get that initial tension into the chains but as you drive, you're gonna tend to shift things around. So basically you just install these like you would the tire you're putting it on and taking it off, hook side out going in a star pattern from top to bottom left to right just trying to keep things as evenly spread out as you can just so that again once your chains starts shifting around when you're driving you have something in place to try to keep them secure. Once you have the chains and the tensioner installed, that's it. Just make sure you get the chains and the tensioner installed on your driver's side tire as well. Roll forward or backwards a few times just to make sure that everything is secure. Also, we do recommend giving this a try in your garage before we end up on the side of the road trying to figure it out but once you do, you're ready to go. Overall, if you're looking for some of the more aggressive chains that you're gonna be able to get, these are gonna be that option for you. They're rated for off-road purposes only so you're not gonna be able to use these on the road. They're only gonna be used for those off-road purposes whether that's just moving something in the mud or you have some property and you need a little bit of help getting some traction these are gonna be that option for you. They've got that alloy steel construction so they're gonna be durable and hold up over time and I think overall they are a good fit for a 2022 Toyota Tacoma.

These tire chains are great! I work in construction and we had a semi with trusses get stuck on the ice. I installed these chains on all 4 tires and was able to pull the semi up the icy incline.
