BOLT (Breakthrough One-key Lock Technology) has solved that problem by designing a line of locks that can operate with a key you already have handy - your vehicle ignition key.
When you insert your own key into the cylinder, spring-loaded plate tumblers move up and down until they are matched exactly to that key. The first time the key is rotated, the cylinder is uniquely coded to that key. When the key is removed, the cylinder moves into the locked position. When the key is turned again, it will rotate to the unlocked position.
A new tailgate can cost you hundreds - the Pop & Lock saves you the cost and aggravation of replacing a stolen tailgate.

Ellen: Hey everyone, I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com, and we're going to be taking a quick look at the Pop & Lock Custom Tailgate Lock. This allows you to convert your tailgate into a locking door, so that way you can keep any gear, accessories, tools or anything else you might be storing in your truck bed under your camper shell or total cover, safe from anybody getting access to it. It's going to replace the existing handle and give you a nice lock to keep everything safe. The cool thing about this is that it does code or keys to your ignition key, uses BOLT Lock, which is a one lock technology. So as soon as you put your ignition key in there, it codes to that key, and will allow you to then use that one for the rest of the time that you have this. With that you want to be sure that you don't remove this sticker until you're ready to put your ignition key in there.Use the key that you're going to be using every day.
That's going to make sure that you have the best outcome possible with that locking technology. If you use a spare key or something like that, it might be a little bit different and it can sometimes cause a little bit of issues. So use the one that you use all the time. That makes it really easy that you don't have to keep track of that second set of keys, just uses that ignition key right there to lock and unlock. There's going to be a manual lock.
So it doesn't work with the power function. If you do want a powered function, we do have those kits available here at etrailer.com. This particular lock housing is going to work for the 2005 through 2015 Toyota Tacoma. This is the black sand pearl color. So it should match with your factory paint, Has that nice high gloss paint color.
There's a little bit of a pearly shade to it, but it's a pretty nice dark black.Handle gives you good access to get in there and open that up. There's a little notch in here. If you want to pop that out to allow for a backup camera, you can put that in there as well. This reuses all the existing hardware from your original locks. So there's no cutting or drilling required.
It's just going to use the existing stuff that you have back there to get this in place. So you put your clips into this mechanism to operate the lock and all the stubs here or weld nuts are going to allow you to thread that in place with the existing hardware.So pretty straightforward. It does come with instructions on how to do that, and it should make a nice addition to your Toyota Tacoma. It's covered by a one-year warranty and made in the USA, and that's pretty much going to do it for our look at the Pop & Lock Tailgate Lock. My Honda has an after-market alarm that won't allow for the installation of the electronic version of the Pop&Lock. The manual locking version of Pop&Lock was my only option. Installation was straight forward once I found a YouTube video. Installation took about one hour; but, I wasn't in a hurry. Pictures in the instructions that came with the product were blurry and didn't provide enough detail to be useful; but, the YouTube video was more than adequate. Pop&Lock should solve my need for locking the tailgate; manually.
Item arrived on time and the quality met my expectations. It took about 30 minutes to install with no issues. My only disappointment was finding out after installation that the key cannot be removed unless in the locked position. Why? This poses a great inconvenience when opening and closing frequently where security is not an issue.
I installed the etrailer Pop and Lock tailgate lock on my 2018 Honda Ridgeline. The item was delivered very quickly. The instructions were clear enough but there were several YouTube videos that made the installation easy.
Since I installed it I can't believe I went 3 years without it. Coupled with my trifold tonneau cover, I now have a secure place in the back of my truck.
Just need a tailgate lock for trips/vacations, so the manual fits my needs well without the wiring install. Good instructions and the install went well.
Easy install. Shipping sucked, took 7 days from Missouri to Florida, by the USPS. It's not called snail mail for no reason. I'm sure UPS or FedEX would have been faster, but I would have gladly paid shipping and receive it in way less time.
Part fit perfectly, however, mechanism had a LOT more play in it than the original part. I may just mount the lock cylinder that came on the new part on the old part so there is less play in the system. First time I locked the tail gate with the hard cover closed, I had to break into it to get the tail gate down.
When I first received and installed this lock I was very impressed with the quality, fit and finish! Also with the ease of installation! I notice now that, for some reason, you can't remove the key when it's in the unlocked position, which means it must be locked at all times the key is out of the lock. This makes it a bit inconvenient when you are loading and unloading several items in a short time frame and you really don't need to have it locked. The good point is thought, there's no chance of forgetting to lock it!
Thank you for the opportunity to let you know how pleased I am with my purchase. The website was easy to negotiate and the ordering was easy. The delivery time was great for the times we are going thru. A great match for my truck easy to install. I scoured the web for this part and you were the only place I found it available. The replacement cylinder alone from GMC was $58.00, and you had to configure your ignition key to fit it. I ain't no locksmith.
The product was so easy to install that after I finished; I thought about installing them for a living...Hahahaha. No, but it was very easy, and works great!

Terrible product. Instructions are super vague and the reference pictures it gives you are blurry, so worthless. Put everything together for the mechanism to not work. It takes a lot of torque to lock the tailgate. I then tried to unlock it and it would not budge. The key started to bend I was putting so much effort into twisting. I was able to unlock the tailgate by pushing on the actual mechanism itself. I tried changing everything but to no avail. I looked at every part of the unlocking mechanism to see if I could find the problem. It seemed like just turning the key could not generate enough force to unlock the tailgate. I'm glad I tested it before I put all the trim back on or I would've been screwed.
I installed the tailgate lock within 5 minutes, you provided very good and easy to follow instructions. Great product and supper fast shipment.
The actual assembly process was pretty easy. The lock cylinder was having real difficulty . turning until I put some white lithium grease on the riveted hinge bar. Finally it opened enough to work.
The locking tailgate handle installed very easy with very detailed directions. Works great and feels about the same quality as factory. Looks great and matches perfect from original.
Very happy with my purchase. Received multiple emails notifying me that my purchase was received and also shipped which also provided tracking info. Received my replacement locking tailgate handle in two days and it only took five minutes to install. Looks factory and looks and works great. Will definitely order from etrailer again!
My truck did not have a locking tailgate handle and I put on a tri fold cover and wanted to be able to keep things safe. So I shopped around and this is really the only one I can find. I was able to install it in under 15 min. It does what it's suppose to but it just seems very cheap. Not as durable as the stock one. But it works and looks good!
The installation went very easy. The instructions were clear and almost perfect. The only thing I found wrong was it said to use a 6mm driver to unscrew to bolts mounting the handle. It is actually a 10mm. The final look is great.
Found this item via google and decide to order it. After ordering I also looked [online] and seen it was some what cheaper. But went ahead and kept this order just to keep it for more of a local business. Opened the package and thought wow this is nothing but a piece of plastic. Well I installed it and while taking out the old one it too was all plastic. The only thing the clips that hold to the rods are a little more flimsy than the original. Got it installed and it wouldn’t lock unless I kinda flipped the handle while turning the key. I thought oh no this isn’t going to be good. I got out the old faithful WD-40 and sprayed the moving parts and it works like it should. So far I am pleased with the item. It is just chrome covers plastic but with normal care should last a good long time.
Looks good also on my vehicle. ( picture below).
I would recommend this item, pay a little more here but it keeps them in business. Deleobert was very fast and packaged well.
Installation went OK. Used key to lock tailgate. Using key to unlock is very stiff. Afraid I may twist off the key. Also having problems getting the top trim cap in p.ce. not easy.
So far I love it. I am replacing another locking handle that quit working in the traditional mode. Installation was easy and quick (less than an hour). The only thing I had to do differently than the instructions called for is ream out a hole slightly in the mounting bracket. But that was easy.
Thank you for what appears to be a quality item, so far, anyway. I am including a picture of it installed on my Ridgeline.

I bought one in 2015 and it did great until someone tried to force my tail gate open and the plastic lever broke. I bought another one this year (2023) and install went just as smooth as last time. Works perfect.
