Video Transcript for Pop and Lock Custom Tailgate Lock: The Breakdown

Speaker 1: Today, we're gonna be taking a look at Pop and Lock's line of power tailgate locks. You wanna refer to our fit guide to find the appropriate part number that will fit your vehicle. This power locking system's gonna keep all the cargo stored in the bed of your truck, whether it's behind a Tonneau cover or camper shell, no one can access it because it's locked safe. And since this power locking system connects directly to your vehicle's factory wiring, it's gonna work with your remotes and everything else, just as if it was part of the vehicle right from the factory. In addition to protecting the cargo that may be in the bed of your truck, it's also gonna protect your tailgate from theft. This locking mechanism is gonna interrupt your factory tailgate release handle, preventing it from opening the tailgate. It has a power actuator that will move a lever that will either engage or disengage your manual lever, allowing it to either open or not open. This is a permanently mounted option that's gonna be completely hidden with inside your tailgate. And since it's wired directly into your factory lock and unlock switch, you don't need any extra keys or anything. And while they're other locking systems out there that require you to use a key, back here at the back, this power system is gonna be much easier in the dark. You don't have to worry about fumbling with that key, finding the right one on your key chain. With just quick hit of a button, you can lock and unlock your tailgate and you're on your way.So not only does it work with your remote, but when you lock it up here in your vehicle, it also locks your tailgate.

Additionally, when you unlock it here in vehicle, it unlocks your tailgate. So what's great about that is that you don't even know that it's there, but it's there doing its job all the time. And the locking mechanism is made of a corrosion resistant durable steel, so you don't have to worry about anybody forcing your lock open, because they won't be able to.And that completes our look at Pop and Lock's line of power tailgate locks.

Works great just have fine tune!

by:

As advertised. I had it professionally installed, however. And they mentioned that there were several things they did differently from the instructional video(I sent them) because they had better ways to do it. This, I also highly recommend, though it's not a hugely complicated job, professionals just do it better...

I installed this lock on my 2013 Tacoma 4x4 Crew Cab. The lock was easy to install and took about 4 hours (taking my time). The Pop a Lock kit contained all the hardware required for the install and there was no surprises. The lock works well! I'm really glad I bought this.

I feel like my Ridgeline is now secure. Great add on for the Ridgeline onece you install a Toneau cover. Works great. The only difficulty with installation is taking the time to install and properly run the wiring to fuse panel.

by:

The Pop and Lock unit I installed on my 2019 Honda Ridgeline quickly solved all of my security and safety concerns. Due to the extreme weather in December in the Northwest I had Rainier RV install the unit for me. It took less than an hour and was a breeze. Everything needed for installation was provided and the result is outstanding. From delivery on time , product as described and promised to ease of installation, I couldn’t be more pleased.

I was looking for trailer parts and came across this site. Looked at what they carry and came across this tailgate lock. The main reason my wife bought this was to be a Xmas present, becuz i kept leaving the key in the tailgate lock after opening and closing the gate. Then go do something and then find I don't have my keys. I needed this bad enough she gave it to me early. Not bad to install after watching the video, fairly easy. Much easier to push a button in your pocket to unlock and lock than to fumble with keys. During the day, my job requires I carry tools and parts to jobs. Constantly opening and closing tailgate. This will make for an easy day. Just bought a 2013 Ford F150 FX4 a year ago. This is the only option it didn't have.

Works great, but directions could have been more explicit on wire connections. Using stick pins, finally found VOM activity on the third tan wire with yellow strip. The other pin was in a grey wire per the instructions, but a test run of the solenoid did not work. Moreover, the door locks stopped working altogether. At this point, contacting tech support, they said to look for a larger grey wire. After further unbundling, a larger grey wire was found, where everything was found to work properly. All other aspects of the installation went quite smoothly. That said, my only recommendation is that the directions state to look for the largest of the tan/yellow and grey wires in the bundle. This would save a lot of headache.

Pop-lock installed perfectly on my 2019 Honda Ridgeline Black Edition. I routed wire up through left side rear door seal area and then to door piller wiring bundle, instead of through fire wall to fuse box. Took extra care and time in routing and tying wire under vehicle. Used nylon ties provided plus 10 or so more. Rented a lift for 1 hour for ease of wire routing. When hooking up wires in door piller, Install purple wire to small red wire, and green wire to the smaller yellow wire. It was a very easy, and smooth transaction from etrailer. Product was as described in web site, and received lock within 3 or 4 days. Great product. Great seller!

it is an good lock for the tail gate it you have a one of the hard top bed covers but, you have to do a little modification to it. Ok just by installing to with the one screw (using a lock nut) if you apply enough force to the tail gate handle it will move from its place and the gate will open (Pop&lock needs to fix this problem). What i did is i use tie wraps to hold it in place so if you force the tailgate handle it will not move. I thinking on making a better modification but for the time being this works fine.

Easy install and no issues at all so far

by:

I installed this late spring and it worked great during the summer however when it started getting cold, it would fail, sometimes staying open. It is not an easy install to remove the panels, so i waited it out.. Since I live in the northern climate, I was not using my truck bed to secure items on road trips.. Once it warmed ups this spring, it resumed correct operation. The install video was thorough but the product is iffy if you experience temperatures 50 degree F or below. I find that surprising since the manufacturer is based in Green Bay, Wi. I do like the product since I want to secure items in my truck bed and I cannot find any alternatives other than a manual lock kit that they also sell. hopefully they have redesigned since I will have to purchase another kit to fix this..

Seems to be a good product. Insulation is average too easy to do.

I have a 2012 Ram 1500 crew cab 4x4

Bought
this for the security and convenience.
Install was pretty simple.
There's an online video but it's 4 years old and there is no longer a relay but the rest is true...just run the large harness wires inside the vehicle.

The base mounting plate that fits over the two bolts at the tailgate handle didn't line up...just spread the "feet" a lil til it lined up and installed the nuts.
I ran the wires through the same hole as my back up camera and through the same protector plate in the body of the truck to make it seamless.

Zip tie every 8 inches or so...I used a lot more zip ties than those provided...get a bag..they're cheap and you will use them!
I wrapped the long harness in the wire loom as I had some...I do recommend!

I ran the wire harness with the plug down from by my firewall towards the ground instead of trying to feed up from the bottom as I was by myself. I had an amp put in so I used the same hole as the power wire to the amp through the firewall. There is a "spongy" plug that will lead right behind the dash on my truck.

I pulled off the kick panel/step guard to expose the insulation hiding the wires. Two push pins to pop out...not as easy as you would think...but once I got them out the harness was attached to the side of the body. There's a "y" of wires the wires the directions said to use were tan/white and tan/green. I spliced the green wire from the pop & lock to the tan/white and blue to tan/green. when I hooked the harness together and tried it it worked perfectly but on the driver door lock so one push of the remote button unlocked the driver door and tailgate...no big deal to me but you may want to try the other wires to work off the passenger doors or two pushes of the remote?

Once I was sure everything worked right I started to map out running the wires...this is not as straight forward as it may seem. There are many "clips" holding in the brake lines and I securely but not so hard to move the lines attached the wire to them running along the frame as much as possible. the tricky part was where the long gas tank sits from about midway of the rear driver door to the rear wheel well. I tried going over the top of the gas tank...NO GOOD!

Went back to the brake lines and the frame and with a lot of cussing and many trys I was able to get the zip ties over and back to be able to secure in that very tight of spaces along the frame.

Save the long zip ties for the area around the rear wheel. There is a mounting plate for the lines and it rides up on the wheel arch so having a lil longer zip tie makes a big difference in being able to hold the wire in place and grab the tie and feed it so you can tighten it!

I had a little wire left from both pieces so I just doubled it against itself and zip tied it to the electrical harness wires to the brake lights and such making sure to leave the clip area open so if I ever need to disconnect I don't have to cut the zip tie

This Pop & Lock system is awesome. No more worrying if I forgot to lock the tailgate or not when going somewhere. Simply lock or unlock using the keyfob, door locks, or personal combination entry system. Install took about an hour. All trucks need this.

by:

Works great. Tailgate installation was a breeze. Running the wire to the front took time and effort. Would have been easier up on a lift. Finding the correct wires in the bundle of a a couple hundred wires under the driver side entry plate was challenging. Turned out that the instructions said find the tan with yellow stripe wire. Was closer to a medium brown with yellow stripe wire. I close the grey wire that was the same size as the brown/yellow and it worked. Did have to exchange the two wires in the tailgate to have it in sink with the truck doors.

by:

Installation went well, however I needed to shorten the travel arm by 1/8", as it was binding with the sissors mechanisim.
Color codes for power were spot on.

by:

So, 2010 Ford Sport trac 4 door Limited, purchased this kit part # PAL8250, live in Canada and shipping was a little long but expected.
Installation, was very simple and straight forward, instructions were simple and correct for my vehicle. The only picture I will submit is the lock assembly bolted to the lock arms. I had watched the video and like that video I had to use the farthest opening in the tailgate to slide into position. Running the wires from rear to front of vehicle was straight forward just made sure the wires are clear of any heat source or moving parts.
I came through the firewall In the rubber grommet for the hood latch, I used a rod 1/8 “ diameter slightly sharpened with a hole drilled in the end to attach wires and pull through opening. Once inside vehicle I removed drivers kick panel and found the right colored wires, stripped a small opening to expose wires hooked up a tester to ground and hit the unlock button on fob or door closed control, on my vehicle light blue withe green stripe showed power on unlock, grey wire with tan fired lock, I found there were 3 identical looking wires in that loom ( I went through all three to find the right one) not a problem but after looking closely the other wires were not tan stripe, just taped the ones I did not use back up to prevent shorting. I then took the right wires striped back a 1/4 “ WITHOUT CUTTING ANY STRANDS twisted wires to each one and tested worked great so I soldered together each connection retested then taped the loom back up and put back in place along floor pan replaced kick panel. Took my time on this one no hoist so the longest part was running wires and zip striping. As for using soldering, connectors are provided I just prefer not to use them.
Start to finish maybe 1 hour.
The lock part is well constructed appears to be stainless steel pre formed and fit perfectly, so perfect you have to make sure you have everything lined up before it fits tightly in place, then just bolts in to hold secure with one nut.
I would give this a full 5 star review and the piece of mind that the tailgate is locked when the truck is locked is the best part

by:

I like this product but better info for wiring it at the door would help. There are 2 grey wires and 4 tan wires, letting people know that they need to choose the larger gauge grey and tan would help. Also when I was preforming the test run, the metal piece that slides kept popping out of the plunger hole. That piece needs to have something to hold it in place. I sent some pictures so you can see what I did to get it to work

1. Watch the video before installing!

2. My 2012 F150 Supercrew has the reverse camera and assist step in the tailgate. Installation of the lock assembly was simple and easy. I did use, and recommend a set of mechanical fingers to make wire harness routing through the tailgate much easier. I ran the the finger through the tailgate and out of the hole in the bottom of the gate. Also, if you have the camera harness like I did, routing is much easier if you remove the tailgate from the right hinge only, and move it away from the bed slightly to allow better access to the hole in the bed. I also routed the wire from underneath the bed and then through the tailgate due to the camera wire harness. I installed spiral wrap around the harness in the area of the tailgate to provide additional chaffing protection. I purchased the split sleeve to protect the wire harness routed from this area to the front of the cab.

3. Instead of drilling a hole in the rocker panel box, I found a hole with a rubber plug installed, at the rear of the passenger door rocker panel. I used a 1/4" gasket punch to cut out the center of the plug, routed the wire through the hole, and sealed it with black silicone. The wire went right into the wire tunnel. I routed the wire harness up to the driver door rocker area, and connected into the truck harness there. I did wire my gate lock to unlock with the passenger door, so the wire colors were Grey with a tan stripe for locking, and Purple with a grey stripe for unlock. I secured the harness in the rocker tunnel with nylon cable ties.
I have several friends who own F150's with locking tailgates, and they all indicated they would be looking into getting one for their trucks!

Install was relatively easy on 2020 Frontier. Tied into the wiring in the passenger side B pillar. Instructions are vague. Video for an install on a 2019 Frontier made all the difference. Tied blue to purple and green to light blue wires in the B pillar. Just like in the video. Worked perfectly. I think earlier models will be different. Can’t attest to longevity, just installed it yesterday.

i ordered this product to go along with my extang solid fold on my 05 ram 3500. the installation video was very informative! i watched it two or three times while waiting for this to be delivered, and by time it arrived i barely needed the instructions. the main wire that goes from back to front of the truck was barely long enough following the trucks oem harness. i also didnt use the battery tirminals for power, i think that looks cluttered. i used the positive battery post in the power distribution box, and a main ground on the frame right next to it. very clean looking. i feel much better leaving my golf clubs in back during the summer, and transporting hunting equipment and firearms legally through the fall and winter. thanks!

This is an excellent product, however when I opened the box it was plain to see there was no split loom covering over the supplied wiring harness. etrailer was very apologetic and was willing to send me the split loom or credit me the cost of the covering. ($6) Plus they were available to answer the phone on a Saturday!

The installation video posted on this site was very helpful. My particular vehicle is an access cab, so there were a few differences. No need to go beyond the driver side kick board covering to find the correct wires for connection. I also drilled my own hole and used a 1/2" grommet in the bottom of the tail gate for a cleaner install. One tip I would suggest is to find a block of wood equal to the gap between the tailgate and body of the truck for drilling this hole. I noticed on the video the technician did not do this. Very important if you want a clean hole in the metal.

Product works as advertised. Not going to lie, I was upset with the lack of split loom covering on the wiring harness. Overall I think etrailer.com is a great source for parts and information.

I have a locking sliding bed cover and to know the tailgate is locked when I click the key fob makes me feel very secure that my belongings are locked safely in the bed of my truck. Installation was not too difficult, but that has nothing to do with the quality of the product. Once installed, it has worked flawlessly. Watch the videos and take your time.

Exactly what I needed to get my 2011 ram 1500 5.7 tailgate to work with remote

by:

The locks, one for the hinge and one for the latch were very easy to install and work just as advertised, It took about 10 minutes to install the hinge lock and about 1 hour to install the latch lock, most of that getting to the wiring under the dash. Very nice product, very pleased with the equipment and the ease of installation.

  • How can the Tailgate be Unlocked if the Pop and Lock Powered Tailgate Lock Fails
If the locking mechanism of the Pop and Lock Powered Tailgate Lock, # PAL8320, fails, the only way to unlock the tailgate is to break into the tailgate to remove the lock. I spoke with my contact at Pop and Lock and he said most lock smiths can do this, even if you do not have an OEM keyed lock on the tailgate. If the failure is a result of the truck losing power, you could simply use another power source to run a positive and negative lead to the connector that connects the smaller wiring...
