1. Count the lug holes
Look at the wheel hub or the back of the wheel and count how many lug holes there are(also called bolt holes).
Common configurations include: 4-lug, 5-lug, 6-lug and 8 lug
2a. For even lug counts (4-lug, 6-lug, 8-lug)
Measure from the center of one lug hole directly across to the center of the hole opposite it.
Common configurations: 4 on 4", 6 on 5.5", 8 on 6.5"
2b. For odd lug counts (5-lug)
Measure from the center of one lug hole to the outer edge of the hole directly across (not center-to-center since there's no directly opposite hole).
Common configurations: 5 on 4.5" (most popular), 5 on 5", 5 on 4.75", 5 on 5.5"

Today, we're gonna take a look at this Americana 14 inch by 5-1/2 inch AM01 Series Gunmetal Gray Machined Aluminum Trailer Wheel with the 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now, this is an aluminum wheel. It's very durable, lightweight, rust proof. And we mentioned it's an AM01 Series Wheel, which you can see is a five-spoke design in a Gunmetal Gray finish.
And then they have a machined finish on the face of the spokes, even on the edge of the lip, which provides a nice, bold, sleek look. They do use a clear coating on both the front and even on the back of the wheel to help protect the finish. A few measurements we're gonna give you on this wheel is the diameter and the width. And when you measure the diameter of the wheel, you're always measuring inside to inside because you're measuring bead seat to bead seat. Basically, when a tire is mounted on this wheel, the tire beads are gonna seat right here, so the diameter of the tire is gonna be bead seat to bead seat.
So when you put a tape measure on this wheel, if we go inside to inside, you can see there's your 14-inch diameter. And the width will be the same way. It's bead seat to bead seat, so inside to inside. And there's your 5-1/2 inch width. Now, the bolt pattern on this wheel is a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern.
And if you want to measure that on the wheel that's an odd number of lugs, like in this case, five, what you'll wanna do is pick any one of the holes, let's say this one, and then you're gonna measure across to either one of these holes. But when you measure it from the center of the starting hole to the furthest edge of whichever hole you measure to. On this one, it'll measure 4-1/2 inches, so that means it's a five lug, 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. Does use a wheel lug size of a 1/2 inch by 20, and the weight capacity on this wheel is 2,150 pounds. Now, one of the main features I like on this wheel is the steel inserts that they insert into the lug nut wells here.
They press them in. Helps keep your wheel securely in place on your trailer hub. Basically, what those steel inserts do is when you put your lug nuts on your stud, torque it down, prevents these holes from elongating or wearing down. So eliminates the need for constant re-tightening of your lug nuts. If you noticed, the center cap is not included. If you do want a center cap, we do sell those separately on our website. You do wanna make sure to get a center cap that'll have the same diameter as this pilot hole 'cause this center cap is installed through this hole. The diameter on this pilot hole is 3.19 inches. This wheel does meet the DOT, Department of Transportation, specifications and the SAE J2530 standards. The aluminum wheel I purchased came today. The packaging was incredibly well done. The wheel had plastic rings on each side protecting the edges from any potential shipping damage. Additionally, the wheel was wrapped in a protective foam sheeting. More packing paper was added to all sides to fill out the box keeping the wheel from moving around in the box. It was like what I would have done if I were packaging it myself. Thanks to all who filled this order.
