Features to know about

Smooth Stops Under Heavy Loads: 20,000-lb Surge Design

This hydraulic actuator delivers strong, even braking for trailers with disc brakes and up to 20,000 lbs gross towing weight. When your tow vehicle slows down, the actuator’s surge system automatically applies hydraulic pressure to your trailer brakes. The unique roller design keeps the movement straight and smooth through the stroke, so you get consistent braking even when hauling heavy or multi-axle trailers.

Backing Up Without Brake Drag: Built-In Electric Lockout

The integrated electric reverse lockout makes maneuvering easy. When you shift into reverse, the solenoid stops hydraulic pressure from reaching the brakes so you can back up without them engaging. It wires directly into a 5-pole flat, 6-way round, or 7-pole connector and is protected by a built-in shield to keep dirt and moisture away from the valve.

Flexible Setup for Any Build: 5-Position Adjustable Channel

The offset drop-channel has five different mounting positions that let you match the lunette ring height to your pintle hitch or other coupler setup. The built-in drop is ideal for tall trailers, helping everything line up level behind the tow vehicle. The sturdy steel channel also makes it easy to switch out couplers if your setup changes later on.

Built for Corrosion Resistance and Long Life: Zinc-Plated Steel Construction

The heavy-duty steel body with a corrosion-resistant zinc finish stands up to weather and road salt, making it well suited for boat or equipment trailers that see wet conditions. It resists bending in tight turns or jackknife situations and includes a breakaway kit for added safety if the trailer ever disconnects.

Simple Mounting: Bolt-On Fit for 3" Tongue

Installation is straightforward thanks to the bolt-on design sized for a straight 3" wide trailer tongue. Once mounted, the actuator’s drop channel and lunette ring are ready to go with minimal adjustment, giving you a reliable braking setup that’s solid and easy to maintain.

Video Transcript for Review of Dexter Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - T4869820

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we take a look at this Dexter bolt-on disc brake actuator with the lunette ring and the five-position adjustable drop channel. This has a 20,000-pound gross towing weight capacity. Now, you're gonna use this actuator to synchronize your trailer's disc brakes with your tow vehicle brakes. Basically, this lunette ring is gonna couple to a pintle hitch. The open diameter of this lunette ring is three inches.

Now, this is a hydraulic actuator. This will activate your trailer's brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. Basically what happens is when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs, and the momentum is gonna push your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. So with the surge brake system, when it goes towards the rear of your vehicle, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while that tow vehicle slows. So this inner slide of the actuator is gonna telescope back into the outer portion, and it applies a force to the master cylinder in the back here, which will in turn supply the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brake.

If you notice the rollers right up here and right down here have the grease zerk fittings on 'em for lubrication. These unique roller design will reduce the resistance during the telescoping to create a nice, straight line movement. If you notice it has a corrosion-resistant zinc plate finish on it. We mentioned the adjustable channel right here. It has five different mounting positions for your coupler.

A built-in drop on, this is great for tall trailers. The height of this channel, adjustable channel is 12 inches. It is a sturdy, durable steel construction and will resist, resist bending in any jackknife situations. And if you notice, this chain with the hook on the end, this is a breakaway cable, and it is required by law because it will prevent a trailer runaway situation. Basically what happens is when you go to hook up, you'll hook up your lunette ring, and then you'll take this chain with the hook on the end and hook that to your tow vehicle also.

So this will be hooked up, and what happens if by chance it comes disconnected from your tow vehicle, that chain is gonna pull on this lever, which is gonna activate the lever, which will activate pressure again to the master cylinder, which will then apply the brakes, so it prevents a trailer runaway situation. And this breakaway chain or cable is required by law and it is included. Now, in the very back, underneath the shield here is an electric reverse lockout solenoid. What that does, it's attached to the back of your master cylinder. This is gonna let you back up without actuating your trailer brakes. The electric reverse lockout on the actuator is gonna automatically activate when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse. The wires on the end will wire into your trailer connector, which connects to your tow vehicle so that it can detect when you go into reverse. And when your vehicle goes into reverse, the solenoid ensures that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer's brake, thus allowing to back up your vehicle. Now, to use that lockout feature, you must have either a five-way flat, six-way round, or a seven-way trailer connector. We mentioned you notice the protective shield over the solenoid protects it from any damage. We mentioned it's a bolt-on installation. It is designed to fit straight, three-inch-wide trailer tongues, and again, as we mentioned, this is for trailers with disc brakes. The gross towing weight capacity on this is 20,000 pounds and the tongue weight capacity of 2,000 pounds. But that's gonna do it for a look at this Dexter bolt-on disc brake actuator with the lunette ring and the five-position adjustable drop channel.
