Features to know about

Smooth Hookups and Easy Releases: Stainless Steel, Non-Binding Arms

Hooking up on uneven ground can be a hassle if the arms won’t budge or need perfect alignment. The stainless steel, telescoping arms on this tow bar slide in and out smoothly and lock automatically when you pull forward. When it’s time to disconnect, non-binding levers let you release tension with one quick pull. Even on angled sites, it breaks free without the tugging or rocking.

Built Tough but Light: 35-lb Aluminum Body with 8,000-lb Capacity

The aircraft-grade aluminum body keeps weight down to 35 lbs while still handling up to 8,000 lbs of towing capacity. It’s rustproof, powder-coated, and built to take road grit and weather without wearing out. The inner stainless steel arms and self-lubricated bushings keep movement smooth and dependable trip after trip.

Cables and Wiring Stay Neat: Integrated Cable Guides and Included Components

No more tangled cords or dragging cables. Built-in cable guides route the included safety cables and 6-way electrical cord right through the tow bar arms. The vinyl-coated cables resist corrosion and the spring-loaded latches keep them secure. Everything stays organized, protected, and ready for the next run.

Easy Storage on the RV: Folds and Locks in Place

When the trip’s done, the bar folds up and stores directly on the back of the RV. Just push the arms together, tilt it up until the latch clicks, and swing it to either side. It stays locked in place and out of the way, keeping your setup clean and ready for the next hookup.

What You Need to Flat Tow

Flat towing can be a much more convenient way to take your car RVing with you than using a trailer or a tow dolly. It'll save you storage space both at home and at the campsite, and it takes less time and hassle to hook up.

To flat tow your vehicle, there are 5 basic components you're going to need: a tow bar, a base plate kit, a safety cable set, tow bar wiring, and a flat tow braking system.

For the RV Between the RV and Towed Car For the Towed Car
Hitch Tow bar Base plate
Wiring plug Safety cables Braking system
Wiring adapter cord Wiring kit/diodes

The custom-fit base plate installs on the frame of your toad so you can connect the car to your RV with a tow bar. Hook up safety cables between the vehicles to ensure that the toad does not separate from the motorhome if the tow bar becomes detached. Tow bar wiring syncs your vehicle's signal lights with your motorhome's tail lights, as required by law in most states. Finally, the flat tow braking system - also required in most states - activates the brakes in the toad when you hit the brakes in the RV, making for smoother, safer braking, and preventing wear on your motorhome.

Video Transcript for Review of Roadmaster Tow Bar - Hitch Mount - RM-586

Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Roadmaster Sterling All-Terrain Non-Binding Tow Bar for the Blue Ox Base Plates, has an 8,000-pound weight capacity. Now, this tow bar here is gonna let you tow your vehicle safely and securely behind your RV. The shank portion right here is what'll slide into your 2-inch trailer hitch receiver on the RV. There's no ball mount necessary.

And if you notice, it does include the pin and clip for securing it. This is gonna give you a large hookup radius, makes connecting a breeze at any angle, even if your vehicle isn't perfectly lined up with your RV. It offers a self-aligning design. You just hook up and drive the RV forward. And the extra-long, I think the arms right here, you can see, they'll extend into a widget, non-ready towing position.

And if you notice you heard 'em, they automatically lock into place, and you're all ready to go. It is a non-binding design, so it's gonna allow you to release your vehicle at any time, anywhere, even on unlevel ground. And to show you how to do that, I just wanna zoom in. The main thing here is this latch. This latch here, if you just lift up on it, makes it very easy to release the tension that can build up in these telescoping arms.

When the RV and the tow car not perfectly lined up, all you have to do is just flip the latch up. That'll release the pressure, and then you see the arms will be able to telescope freely back, makes it very easy to disconnect the tow bar from the base plates. This is gonna allow you to disconnect even when you're at a hard angle or out of level. Now, the extra-long telescoping arms right here, these are gonna allow for better maneuverability, easier towing, arm length. Lemme just show you on this one right here that pulls out all the way, the arm length, which is gonna be measured from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the quick disconnect bar.

So when it's extended like this, it's gonna be 52 inches. We released it and retract it all the way. The measurement retracted is 40-1/2 inches. The arms themselves, they are a stainless steel construction. The inner arms are allows for nice smooth operation. Now, this is a strong, corrosion-resistant tow bar. It is built to last. It does meet the FEA testing, which will guarantee a strong finished product. The self-lubricated, nylon bushings will eliminate friction between the inner and outer arms for a longer lasting, better functioning system. And the finish on this is a nice, high-tech, powder coat finish, provides additional durability. Also, another feature might be hard to see for you, but on the bottom side of this, they have cable guides, which will protect the included power cord right here and the safety cables 'cause you can run it through there, and it'll keep 'em from dragging on the ground so it keeps 'em from getting damaged or tangled. And to store this, it's a very simple, secure storage alongside your motor home. All you have to do is simply fold the tow bar arms together and then flip it up towards the RV. And this will lock right into this built-in storage latch here and keep it upright out of the way. It's a very fast, easy hookup and disconnect using these included pins and clips. Parts are made in the USA. Again, the compatibility on this one is it works with the Blue Ox Base Plates. You can see it includes the adapters for the Blue Ox Base Plates, so you don't have to purchase any extra parts. Application fits 2-inch x 2-inch trailer hitch receivers, and the weight capacity on this is 8,000 pounds. That's gonna do it for a look at the Roadmaster Sterling All-Terrain Non-Binding Tow Bar for your Blue Ox Base Plates.

My second Roadmaster tow bar. Wouldn’t use anything else. Quick connect for the towed vehicle is easy to remove and maintains the original look of towed vehicle. Others can’t tell you tow it by looking at the front

I purchased the Sterling All Terrain Tow Bar along with the EZ5 base plate kit and wiring kit for my 2015 Jeep Wrangler. Everything was easy to install and work great. The people in customer service at etrailer.com were very knowledgeable about the products they sell and extremely helpful. Very pleased with everything. thanks etrailer!

Am very happy with the tow bar. Easy to install and use. This was a replacement for a 20 year old tow bar that I was no longer able to refurbish. This Roadmaster Sterling tow bar is a quality unit

by:

Exactly what I wanted and it looks grea t!

by:

I love this tow bar....it can usually be disconnected no matter what angle the towed vehicle is at. Very easy to connect up also. If it does bind I can free it up by starting the towed vehicle and cycle it into drive momentarily.

by:

The Roadmaster Sterling tow bar works great so far. Easy to attach to my toad and is non-binding. I did not use the crossbar that came with the tow bar due to purchasing the Blue Ox base plate for my vehicle. I did, however, purchase Blue Ox adapter brackets which were needed. Everything was packaged and shipped in good condition, and the equipment came in as expected.

Excellent , easy to use n I love it.
Best
purchase I made.

Recently I ordered a Roadmaster Sterling All Terrain Tow Bar (RM-576) and a Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plate Kit (RM-521453-4). The included Roadmaster installation instructions were very good and easy to follow. A few minor questions came up during the installation, but eTrailer's excellent installation video by Shane cleared up any confusion. Overall the installation of both the base plates and the tow bar was pretty simple and straight forward. The tow bar is easy to use and works great. I think eTrailer's product and installation videos are a great help in picking the right item and installing it.

One year ago I purchased the equipment to tow my Jeep Grand Cherokee 4 flat behind my motorhome from etrailer. I received the items within 4 days, and was able to do the install myself thanks to the fantastic instructional videos provided by etrailer.
I have towed it from Iowa to Colorado, and several shorter trips. It is easy to
hook up/unhook and tows fantastic. I went with the Roadmaster Sterling tow bar as well as the roadmaster crossbar with removable arms. I would HIGHLY recommend this setup! I also put the roadmaster diode wiring set in the Jeep to use the tail lights. Works flawless! I have used etrailer for several items and have always been completely satisfied. Preston was super helpful in helping me choose the best equipment for my application! Can't go wrong with etrailer!

The tow bar is excellent quality and simple to install. Connecting and disconnecting are a breeze. I had the old style tracker tow bar, but had to upgrade for a heavier vehicle. It fits well on a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

by:

Arrived quickly and well packaged. Took less than an hour to install on the RV with the included safety cables and wiring.I haven't pulled our Bronco with it yet but the tow bar appears to be well built and a quality product.

Bill at Etrailer was good to work with to make sure I had the necessary parts needed for my tow package. Shipment was promt and all parts as per order. Their on line installation videos are a plus to the printed instruction that comes with the parts. I was able to set the computer by the car and pause and start the instruction as needed. Great help.

by:

The new Sterling All-terrain towbar is much better than the one that it replaced. Hooking up and disconnecting is much easier, especially on uneven ground. Working with the team at e-trailer was a great experience, with prompt responses to my emails. All promised delivery dates were met and I appreciated the free shipping offer that applied to my order. I'm totally sold on e-trailer's personnel, philosophy, and operation.

Excellent service from etrailer.com. Their web site is all about helping with the purchase and the installation. The follow up after the sale is a nice touch as well.

The All Terrain non-binding Freedom Latch is an important improvement in the RoadMaster Sterling model. I had an older model and almost always had to fight with the release when trying to unhook the towed car.

by:

This is my second Roadmaster Tow Bar. I purchased the first one in 2010. It gave us 10 years of great service. However it was ready for a tune up and I just didn’t have the time to do it. This purchase is very similar to the previous one. It has everything needed to get you on the road. It included safety cables with an improved method of connecting it to my toad. It also has a heavy duty electrical cable. I did have one issue. The box was damaged and I was missing one bolt. It wasn’t a big issue, I was able to get another one at the local hardware store. The tow bar is very well constructed and has a great appearance. I’ll be hooking between my Jeep Rubicon Unlimited and my Tiffin Motorhome. Can’t wait to try it out.

I installed the Roadmaster tow bracket on our 2017 Ford Cmax Energi and am very pleased with the results. The instructions were good, but the video provided by etrailer was outstanding and made the install much easier. Coupled with the excellent Sterling tow bar, it made a challenging install a reasonable proposal. It took me (I am 66 years old) about 5 hours total (not including wiring) to do the physical installation. Way to go etrailer!

First, received the package and upon opening, found that the linch pins were missing. One phone call and issue was resolved and replacement items were being expedited to me. Appears the box came open on one end during shipment and parts came out before carrier retaped the tear. Good on E-Trailer for outstanding and prompt customer service! Now, the Sterling All Terrain towbar - very impressive unit as I had bought this on reputation only as no dealers had any in stock (they say it is too costly to carry in store). Very well made, excellent finish and welds. Instructions are quite clear and easy to follow. I like that when you purchase this unit, it is a “total package”. There is nothing I could see that is cheaply made - all quality. This was my first purchase from E-trailer, and based on how this order went start to finish, and having to deal with missing parts on an order - I am very pleased and will deal with them in the future.

by:

Great product. Everything works well....it's solid, durable and well built. The only complaint I have is the two plated bolts that hold on the tow vehicle knuckles are rusting and look terrible. I'm going to have to paint them I guess.

by:

I received the Sterling tow bar on time and great condition. It took less than 1hour to install and went great. We can’t wait to hook up and start our exploring retirement. The ease of removal, attachment, and security will make our travels so much easier. Thanks again for your help and a great product!

by:

When it worked it was awesome compared to my old Falcon. However, it fell out of the snap in park position while driving at 9 mo, and ground it up on the freeway. Had to buy another. Warranty would not replace it or fix it. Bought another one. Have now used straps to tie it down if driving in parked position. Howevrr, The new one has a much stronger snap compared to the old one was far looser. I think it was defective, but not covered. So Roadmaster is not a honorable company.

by:

Received order today via UPS. Excellent delivery. Look forward to replacing my old toe bar with this new unit! Included pins, electrical cable and connectors. Thank you!

by:

Replaced my old Roadmaster Sterling All Terrain with a new one exactly the same. etrailer was great. Matthew helped me make sure my replacement choice was a good decision. He answered all my questions about installation and parts to make my rock catcher mount properly. He made sure the package had everything I needed.when I received the tow bar pack, I found all those little parts and bolts that should be replaced just in case. Took me about 2 hours to take off the old and install the new, including rock catcher, new electric pigrail, and the emergenct breakaway cords. Easy. I did have to replace my vehicle 6 pin socket and do a little rewiring. The corrosion was bad. That was in addition to tow bar install.
My old tow bar pistons had begun binding even by hand. ROADMASTER RECOMMENDS REPLACING OR AT LEAST A GASKET KIT 60K TO 80K MILES. I was at 11 years and 110k miles. And, etrailer had info and vids on line that made the job easier. Thanks, Matthew. I appreciate all your follow up, also!
