Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the taillight housings. You will have to remove the taillight trim paneling to access these connection points. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Breaking Down the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector-C87ZV

Hi everybody. Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a look at this CURT T-Connector vehicle wiring harness with 4-pole flat trailer connector. Now, this vehicle wiring harness is specifically designed to fit your 2023 and newer Toyota Crown. And on custom fit parts such as this wiring harness, I do recommend taking advantage of our vehicle fit guide. Simply input the year, make, and model of your vehicle, and our fit guide will confirm if this harness will work for you or if we have something comparable that will work for you.

Now, this harness is going to give you a 4-pole flat trailer connector at the back of your Crown to power your trailer signal lights. This is going to be compatible with 5-pole, 6-pole, and 7-pole adapters. And those adapters are sold separately. And included is this dust cap for the 4-pole flat connector. And this dust cap is going to cover up those connection points when the plug is not in use.

Now, the black box on this harness is a powered taillight converter. This is going to ensure that your vehicle's wiring matches that of your trailer. It connects directly to your vehicle's battery to avoid overloading the vehicle's electrical system. And it's also going to reduce strain on your vehicle's wiring system. CURT builds each converter using surface mount technology for consistent, reliable performance.

It maximizes trailer light yield and intensity while producing minimal heat, ensuring superior operation in rough road conditions. So this harness is designed to connect quickly and easily. You will have to locate your vehicle's wiring harness located behind the taillight housings, and you will have to remove the taillight trim paneling to access those connection points. And once you locate the connectors, then you're gonna separate the connectors, being careful not to break the locking tabs. And then, you're going to insert these T-connectors between your vehicle's wiring connectors and lock them into place.

These T-connectors are custom fitted for your Toyota Crown, so they are going to match up perfectly with the connection points on your vehicle, and they snap and lock together for a tight, secure fit. So once you have these plugged in, you will need to make a good ground connection. And the ground wire is this white wire, and it has a ring terminal attached to it, as you can see. It does come with this self-tapping screw, and that's going to help you get this grounded to a suitable location, such as your vehicle's frame or cross member. You do wanna make sure that the surface is clean and rust free. Next, you will need to mount this converter box to a safe out-of-the-way location. And you can do that with another mounting screw that you might have on hand or with this included double-sided adhesive tape, or with one of the many table ties that's included with this kit. Next, you will need to run the hot lead to your vehicle's battery, and that's this short black wire coming out of the converter box. This short black wire is going to get connected to one end of this included bundle of black wire using one of the included butt connectors. And then, the other end of this bundle is going to get routed to your vehicle's battery. And once you have this routed to your vehicle's battery, you're going to then take this fuse holder, and you will snip these wires in half, and you'll connect one of the wires with the second butt connector to the routed wire. And then, you will take the other wire and attach the included ring terminal to it. And that's going to connect to the positive posts of your vehicle's battery. This does come with a 15-amp fuse, and that fuse will pop right into this holder. And as you can see, it does have a cap, and that's going to keep that fuse protected and safe. Now, you can secure any slack in your wiring with the many included cable ties, and once installation's complete, the four-way connector can be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your trunk. And the maximum amperage of the stop-turn lights is five amps per circuit. And for the taillights, it's 7.5 amps per circuit. Instructions are included to guide you through that installation process. It is also recommended that you use a small amount of dielectric grease on all of your electrical connections, like the plugs on the vehicle and the 4-pole connector itself. It is designed to help prevent electrical failures caused by corrosion and moisture. So on your screen, you see an item number there for a tube of that grease. You can take that item number and put it in the search field of our website, and that will take you to that grease, and you can add that to your order if you so desire. Well, that's gonna wrap up our look today. I do hope that the information was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me.

I have installed quite a few trailer 4 pole connectors and this by far was the most challenging. First the rear tail lights are very difficult to pull out. Secondly it is extremely difficult to get the new connectors up to the tail lights. I ended up cutting the connectors off, ran just the wires up and used butt connectors to resplice. It was also tricky to tuck one of the connectors out of the way on both sides so the lights can be slid back in place. The connectors are also difficult to remove from each light.

The Curt product itself is great. The problems I listed are all Toyota design challenges.

Worked for a short time & it doesn't work now. I hope it is a simple repair like a fuse or something but I will not know until I pull it into the garage and work on it.

When you can, you may want to try double checking the ground wire. You'll want to be sure its a secure connection direct to metal - no rust or debris or paint. You also can check the connection points and make sure things are properly seated. If those things don't help, let me know and we can keep trying!

@BrookeM I did get my vehicle in the garage and what I determined was the converter doesn't work. The hazard lights/blinkers function ptoperly but the running lights only have 1.3 mv coming out of the converter which is less than what is going into it (3.1)

  • Can a Hitch Extender Be Used With The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver on a 2024 Toyota Crown
When you use a Hitch Extender # e88YR with the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C77ZV on your 2024 Toyota Crown it is important to remember the extender reduces the receiver weight capacity by 50%. So rather than being able to hold 350lbs it reduces to 175lbs minus the weight of the Extender(12lbs) to get 163lbs maximum for your bike rack and bikes. With the low ride height of your Toyota I recommend staying away from the hitch extender and selecting the Yakima StageTwo Bike Rack # Y47VR...
