Video Transcript for Yakima JetStream Crossbars Roof Rack Installation - 2023 Toyota Highlander

Hi, Matt with eTrailer, and today we're gonna be talking about the Yakima JetStream roof rack system, on the 2023 Toyota Highlander. Taking a closer look at our system, it's gonna be comprised of our 50-inch JetStream crossbars, our skyline towers, and our landing pad bases. Those are all gonna work together to kinda give you some extra space up top if you wanna carry any roof boxes or kayaks too. Our crossbars are gonna be made of aluminum with a black powder coat finish. It just means it's gonna be lightweight and corrosion resistant. Even though it's made of aluminum, it can still withhold 165 pounds.

And I would just always make sure, and make sure that the rest of your system is compatible with that. Just making sure that your roof can withstand up to 165 pounds. Taking a closer look at a crossbar, this will be the shape of a teardrop, it's gonna be fatter on one side, and it's gonna taper in on the other side. That's just gonna help reduce wind noise. And also, the rubber padding we have in this T track is also gonna reduce wind noise.

But it's also going to help protect any accessories that you plug in here. And beneath our crossbars, we're gonna have our towers. They're just gonna fit right into this base too, you can see the shape that they lined up with. And our base is gonna be a contour to fit the shape of our rails. Taking a closer look at the tower, it's gonna have the ability to squeeze in and open this back over here.

And that will allow you to lift up on this because we're gonna have two divots that pop out, that lock into place with our base. If you want some added security, you can get a lock core installed right here, just to make sure no one can come by and take this off. As for how they sit on top of your roof, we're gonna have just a little bit of overhang on the side. You might be able to hook on something to the very edge. But it's not gonna be far enough to where you're gonna bump your head.

Honestly, I'd actually recommend maybe even going one size up, so you can have a little more room on the end. But, as for how much space we have beneath it, we're gonna have just about 3.5 inches, which is gonna give you plenty of room to clamp underneath. And above it, we're gonna have just about five inches. So this is gonna stick five inches from the top of your roof. That's just something to keep in mind for when you have any accessories on top of here. I would measure how high that accessory is, plus the five inches from your roof rack, and that should give you your total height of your vehicle, just to make sure you can fit in tight spaces or low clearance areas, like maybe a garage. As far as our cross spread goes, it's gonna be a fixed 31 inches. That just means it won't be able to be adjusted. So there's a couple ups and downs to that. The downs are, you won't be able to adjust for different crossbar spreads to accommodate different accessories up top. The ups, though, it won't obstruct your sunroof. And it makes for a really easy install process that you don't have to kinda maneuver and measure everything out. But speaking of the install process, if you need any help installing this, just stay tuned and we'll show you how to do that now. The first thing you're gonna wanna do is lay out all of your supplies. So we're gonna have our 50-inch JetStream crossbar, we're gonna have our towers, and on the other side we're gonna have our fit kit with the hardware. It's gonna come with two tools, an Allen key, and this other key as well. And we recommend you get a tape measure, a couple of these trim tools, and this screwdriver or flathead that we've taped off at the bottom so we don't damage our vehicle. We're gonna start by removing this cover here, on your rails, with a trim tool. I like to kinda put it through the center. And prop it up a bit. Just so I can find the tabs that hold this cover down. After, when I kinda slide down a bit, I'm able to find that first tab. I can get my screwdriver underneath there. And try to pry it up. 'Cause you wanna try to put pressure on the tab that's behind there. I'll just do the same thing on the other side. Next up, we're gonna take our landing pads, and we're gonna have two of each, two of the B, and two of the A. The Bs are gonna go one on the front passenger side, and then one on the rear driver's side, and vice versa for the As. Putting 'em on there, you just have to line up this block here, between these two screws, and lay it down. You'll notice it fits pretty flush, with this fatter side on the outside, and the thinner side on the inside. Next up, we're just gonna take our base. You can just remove the cap on it that says Yakima. I'm going to put ours to the side. After you've removed it, you're just gonna line it up here, with these designs put here. You might have to move it around a little bit, and it'll plug right into place. Next up, I'm gonna take our bolt and washer. And line it up in there, and you start to screw it in. Something to note, it does have that blue patch on it, that's just a thread lock. It's just gonna help it be more secured when it's all the way threaded in. But it's also gonna make it a lot harder to bolt in, so, keep that in mind, if you're having issues bolting it in, just take your time, and keep going 'til it's all the way secured. And once you've tightened it down all the way, just kinda shake it to make sure it's secured. And once it is secured, just make sure you do the same process on the other side. Next up, I'm gonna get my crossbar ready. So I'm just gonna take it, and flip it over so the bottom's showing. And I'm gonna remove my end cap. Like that. And I can now take one of my towers. And to get it started, I'm just gonna take this adapter piece, and plug it right in here. You'll hear a click when it plugs into place. I'm gonna take our block here, and just line it up with that bolt on the bottom. And I have to tighten it up a little bit too. You might see this metal piece here, I'd just like to push that out of my way. And get my Allen key on there. Just tighten it up enough to hold it on. You're gonna wanna gap here, so you can slide into that T track. And when I do that, I can come over here and just line it up, and push it right down here. I don't wanna tighten it all the way, just because I wanna be able to adjust it with this ruler at the bottom here. That'll help you kinda make sure each side is even. It's kinda harder to see in ours since this crossbar's been down here for a little bit, so, it's been kinda roughed up a bit. But, you'll be able to see it on yours much easier. I'm gonna take our end cap again. And plug it right on the back of here. And I'm gonna open the back of this. This is gonna let me tighten it once it's up there, just by squeezing on either side of here, and peeling that back. And once that's done, I'm gonna do the same thing on the other side. With both your towers secured on here, and the ends opened up, we can sit on top of our roof. We're just gonna line it up with our bases here. And if you need someone else to help ya, it's gonna help a lot, because, when you set it on top of there, you really don't lock into place. So, you might need extra hands. But, if you can just do one at a time, you can just slide it through here, that'll lock into place. And I can go on the other side and lock the other side back into place, and then we can get our measurements from there. To get it even on both sides, you're just gonna wanna shut this here. You'll hear it click into place. And just get the measurement from the back of it, to the end of your crossbar, and I'm gonna get a measurement now. And I'm just gonna make sure it's that same measurement on both sides. Once it's even on both sides, I'm just gonna take off the lid, and to do that, just squeeze on both sides and pull away. That's gonna reveal this bolt back here, and I'm just gonna tighten that down with our included tool. I like to squeeze the very back of it so it gets a nice secure hold on it. And when you tighten it down, you'll hear a click, because this has a built-in torque to it. So you don't tighten it too much. And once that's done, we're just gonna close it up, and repeat the same process on the other side. And once you've installed everything, you can give it a good shake test. Just to make sure everything's secured. Once it is, you can take it on the road. And that will conclude the install and the look at the Yakima roof rack system on the 2023 Toyota Highlander.

Works perfectly. I am always impressed that Yakima continues to make parts for the "old roundbars" since they have since moved on to the superior JetStream bars.

Fit our Subaru Forester perfectly. Install was a breeze. For the money I wish they came with the core locks.

I ordered the Yakima roof rack, with the Hullyrollers for the back crossbar and the Mako saddles for the front crossbar to use with my kayak. It arrived just like they told me and I put them on my car the eveningit arrived. Got to finlly use the roof rack on June 22 to go out kayaking and it worked great. Only thing is I did not know about the air reflector piece for the front crossbar. Now I will be ordering it to help with the wind noise.

Great rack, go on fast, easy to install and work well on my VW TDI wagon. Care has to be given and follow the instructions for the install to what type of rails you have. Works great carrying the VW luggage carrier and plan on using it to carry kayaks as well. Just have not decided what kayak rack type to get yet.

by:

Very nice quality towers. Very heavy duty! They have a cool "snap" on / off mechanism for quick removal and installation.

by:

I've attachec a few pictures of the Yakima rack on my Audi Q7. It took a few attempts to find the right combination of attachments, but in the end, the pin attachments work best with the access points on the factory flush-mount rails. Great product!!!!!

by:

roof racks showed up in great condition, and showed up as one package.... I should have ordered the J racks from here but I found them cheaper locally so Thule J racks compliment the whole setup and i am just about ready to hit the water :)

Kimberly has shown that great customer service is not dead! etrailer and Kimberly are great to work with and have earned my business and will always be the 1st and last place I look for my rack+ needs!
As for the application, I needed more space to fit my cargo box on top of my 4Runner TRD Pro’s rack. I came up this this… Thank you!

by:

Very easy to replace. Fit perfectly. I had a slight disaster with roof rack and Yakima showdown but fortunately replacing the landing pads was all that was needed. Very happy about the ease of finding, installing and using.

by:

Everything from etrailer is timely and of good quality! The Yakima crossbars are no exception - they are indestructible.

The installation of this rack system went very well, all of the instructions were easy to read and use. I have attached some pictures of our installation. The vehicle is a 1994 Honda Accord EX four door sedan

Great products though, again, written instructions would have been nice.

Have been rocking my Yakima rack from etrailer.com for a year now. I am using rack in conjunction with a Tepui tent. Once I added the air deflector, I would say it's the perfect setup. The Yakima gives more clearance over the factory rack, so I was able to get my hands under it to secure the tent hardware. If you're thinking of upgrading your factory rack, I would not hesitate to use etrailer.com

by:

The Yakima roof rack system is an Outstanding product. I purchased the product to replace the OEM roof rack because it was too flimsy to carry the tandem bike mount and my bike. The Yakima roof rack is solid and provides me the peace of mind while hauling my bike on the roof of my car. etrailer provided the product for the best price as always.

by:

The rack has been so useful since I purchased it. Staff at etrailer.com were exceptionally helpful in getting the best option for my car and answering questions. I recommend this company, for its 110% customer service, excellent prices and timely delivery.

Yakima CoreBar Crossbars - Steel - Black - 50" Long - Qty 2, part # Y00421 SkyLine Towers for Yakima Crossbars - Fixed Mounting Points, Flush Rails, and Track Systems - Qty 4, part # Y53TR Landing Pad 16 for Yakima SkyLine and Control Towers - Qty 4, part...

  • Recommended Roof Rack to Use the Yakima SideWinder on a 2018 Toyota Highlander LTD
I recommend installing a Yakima JetStream roof rack on your 2018 Toyota Highlander because they provide a clean looking installation that allows you to utilize the full 165 lb weight capacity and can be keyed alike with your SideWinder # Y02071. If you have a naked roof (no rails running from front to back) then you need the 60" JetStream Bars # Y00426 the BaseLine Towers # Y28TR, and the BaseClip # Y06130. For flush mount rails you would instead need the 50" JetStream Bars # Y00425,...

  • Can Yakima LockNLoad Platform For 2017 Toyota Highlander XLE be Used with Roof Tent
The Yakima LockNLoad Platform part # Y05045, # Y53TR, # Y05042-2, and # Y00242 would work great for your tent setup. This will give you a 165 lb dynamic weight capacity which is the standard capacity needed for tents which would use a static capacity instead and would be much higher. This is a creative solution to give you the additional spread you'd need for your tent too!

  • Can Two Sets of Yakima Y04073 JayLow Kayak Carriers Fit on 2018 Toyota Highlander Factory Roof Rack
Each of the # Y04073 JayLow kayak carriers will take up approximately 10.3 inches of space on the crossbar. Factory crossbars won't extend past the roof side rails, so even though you should be able to fit two sets of the carriers on the roof, you might not be able to place them far enough apart on the crossbars to accommodate the two kayaks you'll want to place in the center. What I'd recommend you do is measure the length of your factory crossbars, and compare that to the combined width...

  • Recommended Roof Rack For A 2019 Toyota Highlander To Carry A Thule Hullavator 898
In order to use the Thule Hullavator Pro Kayak Carrier and Lift Assist with Tie-Downs - Side Loading, part # TH898, on the roof rack of your 2019 Toyota Highlander, the crossbars need to extend between 4" and 8" past the the towers/feet. My recommendation would be to go with a 60" crossbar for your roof rack. I have two roof rack recommendations for you. The first rack is for a Highlander with flush rails. It will consist of the following items: Yakima CoreBar Crossbars - Steel - Black...

  • Roof Rack Recommendation to Carry Thule Pulse Box on 2018 Toyota Highlander
In order to carry the Thule Pulse Large Rooftop Cargo Box # TH615 on your 2018 Toyota Highlander you will need crossbars that are perpendicular to your vehicle body so that the box can be parallel with the vehicle body. I really like the Yakima JetStream roof rack system because the crossbars are higher quality with that aero-style design and the legs have adjustments so you get the best fit possible. I'm guessing you have a naked roof but in the event that you do have the flush mount rails...

  • Recommended Platform Rack System without Crossbars for 2019 Toyota Highlander XLE
For a low profile platform style rack similar to a Rhino Rack Backbone System, the only available option is the Yakima Roof Rack and Platform System that uses parts # Y05045, # Y53TR, # Y05042-2, # Y00242. This kit combines the Yakima Lock N Load Platform # Y05045 and Yakima Skyline towers # Y53TR to give you the platform without a crossbar for the low profile setup you're looking for. The additional parts are for the footpack and adapters to allow you to mount the towers to your 2019...

  • What Do I Need To Install The Yakima RocketBox 14 On My 2015 Toyota Highlander
First let's get you a roof rack system! I also like the Yakima Jetstream Bars # Y00425. If you have flush rails on your 2015 Toyota Highlander then you'll need the SkyLine Towers # Y53TR and the Landing Pad 16 # Y00242. If you have a naked roof, still grab the Jetstream bars along with the BaseLine Towers # Y28TR and the BaseClip Fit Kit # Y06130. You won't have any issues with opening the rear hatch. If you take a look at the video attached, the RocketBox has plenty of room on a 2012...

  • Will Yakima CoreBar Roof Rack for 2015 Toyota Highlander Allow fit Yakima Showdown Kayak Carrier
I checked with Yakima just now and they have their Showdown Assisted Kayak carrier part # Y04081 as a fit with the CoreBar roof rack you also mentioned part numbers # Y00421, # Y53TR, and # Y00242. The bars are long enough for the carrier to fit and work well but wouldn't be obnoxiously long. You wouldn't have to worry about hitting your head or anything.

  • Yakima Roof Rack Landing Pad 16 Wont Line Up On 2019 Toyota Highlander
There are two roof configurations on a 2019 Toyota Highlander, bare roof and flush side rails. The Landing Pad 16 part # Y00242 is designed for models with flush side rails. If you have a bare roof you need to use the BaseClip Fit Kit part # Y06130. I think you might be looking at the pre-drilled holes in the roof used to attach the flush side rails from the factory and if so these can't be used and you would have to use the rack for bare roof models. I have attached a video below of the...

  • 2014 Toyota Highlander Yakima Rack Fit W/ Round Crossbars
It really depends on the accessory in question. Most rack manufacturers are going with elliptical shaped bars. These bars help with wind noise and fuel efficiency. Oftentimes, these racks will utilize crossbars with t-channels. Now if your accessory does not have the ability to attach to a t-channel it will have to clamp to the crossbars. If your accessory is designed to only clamp round or square crossbars you will need an adapter, but not all accessories are compatible with an adapter....

  • Roof Rack For 2018 Toyota Highlander w/ Flush Mount Rails For Rooftop Tent
We have a roof rack and rooftop tent for your 2018 Toyota Highlander with flush mount rails, though the crossbar spread on your Highlander is set at 27-1/2 inches. The reason for that is roof racks install at fixed mounting points on the rails, which means a tent requiring a larger spread won't work. That said, there is still a really nice option for a rack and tent for your '18 Highlander, and let's go ahead and start with the rack you'll need, which is from Yakima: - Yakima JetStream...

  • Installing Roof Rack on 2019 Toyota Highlander w/ Flush Rails & Can it Use Longer Crossbars Bars
Good questions so let's start with the installation of the roof rack feet on your 2019 Toyota Highlander and you do need to install the feet at the locations indicated in the directions, which is what we show in the linked installation video. A short crossbar spread really is a positive, as it allows you the use of more accessories, which will fit that spread compared to what looks to be a very long spread if you install the fit in different mounting locations. You can use longer crossbars...

  • How To Carry a Cargo Box and Two Kayaks On a 2015 Toyota Highlander with Flush Rails
In order to carry a cargo box and two j-style kayak carriers on a 2015 Toyota Highlander with flush rails you'll need to use at least a 70" crossbar. The problem with this is that most crossbars only have a certain amount of channel underneath to attach to the mounting feet so you can't just use order a larger bar. The Yakima Corebar however does not have this channel underneath so you can use part # Y00423 with part # Y53TR and part # Y00242 to fit all your accessories.
