Question:

I want to find a solution to attach a rooftop tent to my 2017 Toyota Highlander XLE. Most 3-4 person tents I have found require 30”+ spacing between crossbars. Since the Highlander only has fixed mounting points at about 28” center to center it seems my options are pretty slim. However, the Yakima LockNLoad Platform kit that is compatible seems like a great solution. It’s says the weight rating for this is 165 lbs. Does that mean 165 lbs on top of the platform, or do I need to factor in the platform weight and deduct that from the 165 lbs to get my true weight capacity? The tent I want weighs 160lbs.

The Yakima LockNLoad Platform part # Y05045, # Y53TR, # Y05042-2, and # Y00242 would work great for your tent setup. This will give you a 165 lb dynamic weight capacity which is the standard capacity needed for tents which would use a static capacity instead and would be much higher. This is a creative solution to give you the additional spread you'd need for your tent too!
