User purchased RV used and it was missing the central vac, but the hoses and dustpan were already there, as was the wiring/breaker. Just the main unit was gone. So was the wall panel in the basement where it was mounted, so it looks like they removed the wall to access something and it never got put back. No idea if they removed because old vac failed or if it just happened to be there.
Install of new vac was super easy, even though I had to rebuild the wall to mount it. This kit SKU came with the vac base unit and the tool kit with the head unit (floor brush) and hose, and additional tools, such as smaller brushes, crevasse tool, etc. However, per the manual, there were missing items to be able to do a clean install. There was no hose from the back of the base unit to the plate you mount in the wall (which did come) to allow the two to connect. So you had the piece you hold in your hand and the hose you plug into the plate mounted under the step, which has a set of contacts to detect you plugged in the hose and automatically turns on the vac. However, the "stuff in the wall" that would connect that to the base (the short hose, the wiring and hose couplers were not there. I contacted etrailer and they indicated it was a new product line for them. They worked with the manufacturer, who dropped shipped the extra pieces. By now, they should have worked out the issue.
As for the vacuum, there were a couple issues/comments:
- Hose for connection of the various tools inside the RV is SUPER heavy duty. But it stretches to 35' long to reach everything. This means it is also very heavy. It probably weighs as much as regular upright vacuum and way more than a simple stick vac.
- The connection to the back of the base unit is simply a press fit, so you can remove for maintenance, etc. Seems fine, but over time, might vibrate loose. It is PVC, similar to plumbing tees, but I would NOT glue them. You would have to unscrew the hoses every time you need to service the system.
- The wall plate where they hose gets connected (and option flip-up dustpan if you have that) have a 24V wire connecting them to the base station. This is a simple set of contacts that meet a piece of metal on the hose to close the circuit and tells the vac to start. However, the wires at the base unit are not labeled. Just two wires hanging loose. Not sure if there is a polarity that needs to be observed, as it powered up on first try, but the instructions said, "if you plug it in and it doesn't work, swap the wires". Really? How about labeling the wires, then?
- The base unit has a separate place to connect the hose. This means you can take the hose/tools outside and use the vacuum outside if you mount the base unit strategically in the storage compartment. I demoed this to the customer by pulling my truck close and vacuuming out my truck cab with it. They that that was REALLY cool.
- Base unit has a switch. Turn it to OFF to control with the dustpan/wall panel. Turn it to ON to have it on ALL the time. Only useful when you are using from outside.
- Unit comes with only one bag. You may want to purchase more at the time you buy the unit. Uses Y11 bag, which has two rubber seals, one for rear connection (to the hose in the wall) and 2nd for front facing, where you plug in hose for using "outside" or in the RV basement.
- Suction seems pretty good. No long-term experience (my first install of one of these units), so don't really know if the hose gets kinked, clogs, etc. But it is a pretty large hose and again, is really heavy duty. Accessories seem on par or even heavier duty than those that come with home upright vacs, etc.
- Overall, I was suprised to see ALL the accessories (the floor head, the 35' hose, the extra brushes, etc.) fit into a pretty small storage tub. I think it was about 16"x11"x8". I picked up the tub for the customer to store it in at the orange big-box home store and it all fit great. The customer was really happy and commented that it only took as much storage space as the stick vac would have. Probably true. Note, the hard wand tube that connects the hose to the floor head did NOT fit in the tub, but has to be stored next to it.
Sorry, didn't think to snap a few pics of the install. Due to confusion over items and having to travel three times to site, when I got the last items, I just did so quick, I didn't think to grab any.
Overall, if you want a central vac system, this one seems pretty good. Personally, I would prefer a Dyson stick-vac or similar, but I get those that want more power, etc.
