How To Install Hardwired Surge Protector In Winnebago Minnie Travel Trailer With Transfer Switch 30A
Published 09/23/2025 >
Question:
We’ve got a 2018 Winnebago Minnie Winnie 30 amp setup. Thinking about the Watchdog HU72VR hardwire surge protector, how tough is the install, and will it play nice with our existing transfer switch?

Jim, you’re on the right track. The Watchdog Surge Protector 30A # HU72VR is designed to be wired in ahead of your transfer switch, so it sees the pedestal power before your coach’s electronics do. That way, the transfer switch itself is protected along with your appliances. The install is pretty straightforward: disconnect shore power and turn off breakers in RV, cut your main line, and land the input/output leads on the labeled lugs. We recommend mounting near the power cord entry in your RV compartment, so you don’t lose much cord length.
If you’re handy, you can tackle this in an afternoon, but most folks prefer an RV tech or electrician for peace of mind. Do you usually DIY your electrical projects, or would you rather we walk through more in-depth install steps?
