SmartPlug vs. Twist Lock
RV and boat owners have long relied on Twist Lock style connections for powering their rides. For years, it has been the best option for connecting to shore power. It's been reliable, but most know it's not without disadvantages:
- Curved pins make minimal surface contact, increasing the amount of heat generated
- Locking ring can be prone to breaking, cross threading, and stripping out
- Faulty locking ring puts strain on the connection
- Wear and debris can loosen the fit, further decreasing surface contact
- Circular plug shape isn't user friendly and takes some awareness of the orientation of the pins to insert correctly
SmartPlug's connector addresses each of these concerns and does all of the heavy lifting.
Locking arms grab the inlet, a clamp inside the plug body holds the cord, the inlet cap snaps to the top while in use, and the integrated seals weatherproof the connection. This helps prevent the wiggly, dirty connections that increase electrical resistance, which creates potentially dangerous heat.
Since it uses a square plug face, SmartPlug is able to use flat pins which create far more surface contact, further reducing the risk of high heat and electrical arcing. The square shape and flat pins also make it easy to plug in - no more twisting or guessing if the pins are lined up correctly.

I thought this was rather expensive until I received it. Very well built and so much more solid than the plastic one that came on my 5th wheel. My only complaint is that I wish there were an option for a 90-degree bend so the cord would hang from the plug rather than stick straight out. The weight of the 50AMP cord may cause an issue over time, but we will have to wait and see. My old connector was at 90 degrees, and it appears they offer this in the 30AMP option.

This is the third smart plug I have purchased. It is an excellent product. One small issue with all three orders is that it was short on quantity of screws. I had to find my own to complete the assembly. I still highly recommend this plug to replace the typical twist lock style which can fail and cause a fire.

Smart plug arrived missing set screw. I called Smart Plug customer service number and was told they would immediately send a replacement for the missing set screw to my home. I will not be home until November.
I asked if they would send a replacement next day and was told no they don’t do that.
I now have a smart plug to replace my defective factory plug that I can not install until November.
This is in no way an e-trailer problem.

This plug is great. I know that I have good solid contact each time I plug it in. My only complaint would be that I would like a male 90° turn down version to take the strain off plug rather than it sticking straight away out from the female plug base.

It has worked fine after some initial problems. The set screw was not stamped correctly from the beginning. I could not tighten it down on the wire as the allen wrench would not bite. I called the manufacturer and they wanted me to go through the long warranty process. etrailer fixed it for me.very quickly.

Good solid product. Seems to be quality built.
Install was a little difficult due to my existing cord wiring being opposite of the connections but with patience and a little thought I was able to connect it.

- Looking for Better 50 Amp Inlet and Connector for 2022 Forest RIver Sabre 37FLLHey Ricardo, you don't have to stick with exact same style of 50 amp inlet and connector if you didn't want to. A lot of people really like the SmartPlug setup so for a 50 amp in that style we have the part # SM96FR. Due to the increased contact area these are a lot safer and less prone to issues like overheating and even fires. Plus its a connector style you can use with one hand that's just easier than the standard twist in. These also are sealed up a lot better than other styles.
