SmartPlug vs. Twist Lock
RV and boat owners have long relied on Twist Lock style connections for powering their rides. For years, it has been the best option for connecting to shore power. It's been reliable, but most know it's not without disadvantages:
SmartPlug's connector addresses each of these concerns and does all of the heavy lifting.
Locking arms grab the inlet, a clamp inside the plug body holds the cord, the inlet cap snaps to the top while in use, and the integrated seals weatherproof the connection. This helps prevent the wiggly, dirty connections that increase electrical resistance, which creates potentially dangerous heat.
Since it uses a square plug face, SmartPlug is able to use flat pins which create far more surface contact, further reducing the risk of high heat and electrical arcing. The square shape and flat pins also make it easy to plug in - no more twisting or guessing if the pins are lined up correctly.

AJ What's up, everybody, it's AJ with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna be checking out the SmartPlug replacement RV power inlet, 50 amp, and the color is gonna be gray on this one. Is gonna replace the plugin on your rig. So you probably have the plug in and twist version, and there's some issues with that. It's not exactly waterproof. It does overheat from time to time.
There's a lot of stress on the cord, too, hanging out there. This addresses a lot of those. I know I had issues with the push in and twist version, just because sometimes you can't line up quite right and you go to turn it or tighten it down with one of those rings and it just won't tighten up. You can't seem to get it, especially at nighttime, when you go to put it in there, you might not be able to see it right away. You can see these problems are fixed on this one.
It's got a specific shape to the plug. So you can match up that cord for this plugin in very easily. Now it doesn't come with the cord, you'll have to get that separately, but this is just converting your rig to this system. The system works really well. It's got triple weatherproofing.
The straight pins there on the inside are way better, make a far better connection. Actually, with this connection, it's 20% more contact than the curve design, so this is gonna get more power through there and be safer about it too. I like it 'cause you can line up and plug in on the first try, even in the dark, you know. Okay, match the shape, plug it in. You got a seal on the top here.
It's gonna further protect it. It closes very well, I've got it right there. You see, I can't just open it with my hand easily. You kind of do have to get in there, open it, so I like that that sturdy cover's gonna stay shut. It's gonna be really easy to install, too, and replace your old one. So you can see it's color-coded here on the back. You're gonna match up those wires with the one on your rig side already. When you remove the old cover, strip back those wires, you'll connect those in there. Comes with the Allen wrench to tighten that down on each side, so here, here, here, and here, and that'll hold the wires nice and tight and keep them in place. You push this back onto your rig side with the gusset here on there. And once it's on your rig, you'll use the existing hardware you use to remove the old inlet, to install this one and you're good to go. It's pretty easy to install. It makes it very easy to use, too, just that straight plugin. Also takes some stress off the cord that, like I said, the other twist-in one hangs down there, this one has a sleeve design so it's gonna go in here, hang out a little bit more. And then the stress will actually be on the part here rather than on the cord that's hanging down. That about does it. Thanks for hanging out, and I hope this helps..
