SmartPlug vs. Twist Lock
RV and boat owners have long relied on Twist Lock style connections for powering their rides. For years, it has been the best option for connecting to shore power. It's been reliable, but most know it's not without disadvantages:
SmartPlug's connector addresses each of these concerns and does all of the heavy lifting.
Locking arms grab the inlet, a clamp inside the plug body holds the cord, the inlet cap snaps to the top while in use, and the integrated seals weatherproof the connection. This helps prevent the wiggly, dirty connections that increase electrical resistance, which creates potentially dangerous heat.
Since it uses a square plug face, SmartPlug is able to use flat pins which create far more surface contact, further reducing the risk of high heat and electrical arcing. The square shape and flat pins also make it easy to plug in - no more twisting or guessing if the pins are lined up correctly.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this SmartPlug replacement female connector plug. This is going to replace the shore power plug on your RV or marine power cord. This connector is going to wire to that existing power cord, so you will be cutting the current connector off to put this in place, but it is a pretty straightforward process to get this all wired up. They do include very detailed instructions to walk you through, step-by-step, that whole process, and you can see these terminals are color coded so that you can make sure that you're getting the right wire put in place. Everything you're gonna need to get it connected is included here.
And then this is of course going to provide that 30 amps and 125 volts so that you can connect to your shore power and enjoy your time outdoors. This 30-amp female connector will plug into the SmartPlug, 30-amp male inlet, like so, very simple to get that installed. If you don't already have a male inlet, we do sell those separately here at etrailer.com, but I would recommend getting a kit that includes both the female plug connector and the male inlet here. You can find them in several different varieties, depending on the finish that's gonna match best with your exterior, so black, white, gray, or stainless steel, like we have here, all available here etrailer.com. You can find them using the part numbers that you see on the screen there.
So the sleeve design is gonna make this a much better option for you if you are considering switching over to the SmartPlug system. This is going to help keep the weight and tension off of the electrical pins of your inlet. So that's going to make sure that you're not going to wiggle those loose, cause resistance and electrical problems in the future. The body is actually going to bear the weight of the cord, and if you we're to trip over it, that sort of thing, it's gonna hold it there, instead of resting that weight on the pins, which can become loose if they we're to have to hold that weight themselves. This does have a straight-in connection, rather than your twist type of your older style, so it's gonna make it very easy to get connected, even in the dark.
It only does the one way, so plug it right in and be ready to go. It does have triple waterproof seals to it so that you're not gonna have to worry about any water getting in there causing damage to your electrical components. And it also has this multi-point locking. So we've got these two sleeves on the side here, which kind of difficult to do without actually being installed, but those will click into place. This one's doing a little bit better for me for demonstration purposes.
We'll just show that one. So this will click into place to make sure that it is firmly connected to the inlet there. Just push on the tab there to disengage that and pull it off. But then also our lid is gonna come down and is gonna kind of act as a secondary latch there to make sure that the plug can't get pulled out. So it is gonna be nice and securely connected once you have it plugged in. It is constructed of nice high-quality materials, so our plastics are a UV- and heat-resistant resin that are gonna hold up really well. And then our external metals are marine-grade 316 stainless steel. So it is gonna be a really nice quality for you if you are considering upgrading to that SmartPlug system. Of course it is made here in the USA, so you can trust it's made to the high quality standards that we've come to know and trust for products that are made here in the US. So if you are considering switching over, or if you're just needing to replace your existing SmartPlug female connector, this is gonna be a great option for you. This is the 30 amp. There's also a 50 amp, so make sure that you're getting the one that's gonna work best for you. That's gonna complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..
