Specs:
This Powersports ATV recovery winch is designed for light-duty work and recreational applications. It's perfect for your small sport quad 4x4, 2-wheel drive ATV, or snowmobile with a maximum GVW of 1,000 lbs. It includes a handlebar-mounted rocker switch so you can control the winch from the seat of your ATV. The motor, gearbox, and contactor are sealed so you can confidently run your ATV through mud and water. And it includes a dynamic brake, a synthetic rope and hawse fairlead, and a universal mounting channel for installation.
This winch features a 1-horsepower, 12-volt DC motor with 2,000 lbs of line pull. The permanent magnet motor offers the same line-pulling power and speed as a series-wound motor of comparable size, but it's lighter and uses less current. The motor and gearbox unit is sealed to keep water out, and it's constructed of durable, corrosion-resistant materials including the powder coated housing and zinc-plated steel hardware.
The power unit contains 60- and 80-amp relay switches that transmit power from the ATV's battery to the winch motor. It has 18" leads that run to the vehicle's battery, 6' leads that run to the winch motor, and 12" leads with quick connects for the handlebar-mounted rocker switch. It will typically be mounted with included hardware under the ATV's front cover or hood near the battery.
The power unit has a weather-resistant seal between the lid and base and rubber seals where the wires enter the box. Both relay switches have an electronic assembly that has been filled with an epoxy pour to create a waterproof seal.
The free-spool clutch enables you to pull out the rope by hand. This saves battery power, prevents the brake from wearing down prematurely, reduces wear on the motor, and is much faster than waiting for the drum to power out the rope. To release the clutch for free-spooling simply pull out the hard plastic knob and rotate it 90 degrees so that the pins on the shaft rest against the catch. To reengage the clutch, rotate the knob 90 degrees and push it back in.
The clutch is driven by a single-stage planetary gear train. This provides more speed than traditional worm gear drives.
The dynamic brake uses resistance from the winch motor to control line speed. When the winch is pulling the rope in there is no resistance on the drum. As you start to slow the pull with the rocker switch the motor slows the drum's rotation. When the power is stopped the drum does not turn and the load is held in place.
Since there is no physical brake device the winch is lighter and has a smaller profile than winches with a mechanical braking system. This makes it easier to mount in places with limited space available.
The handlebar-mounted rocker switch lets you operate the winch from the seat of your ATV. It includes mounting hardware and an 8' wiring harnesss with quick connects.
There is also a wireless remote kit (BDW20099 - sold separately) that lets you control the winch from up to 100' away.
The synthetic rope is made of HMPE fiber that is lightweight yet stronger than steel. This synthetic rope is safer to use than a steel rope because it generates less kinetic energy - and therefore less kickback - if a break occurs. It won't stretch - or creep - over time like steel rope can. And it's also less likely to fray and create sharp strands so it's easier to handle and easier to spool.
The rope winds around a solid steel drum. The mounting flanges are strong enough to resist bending or breaking if the rope wrap becomes uneven and excess stress is put on the drum.
A 6' woven polyester protective sleeve at the hook end of the rope provides extra protection for your hands. A hand-saver strap is also included to use in conjunction with work gloves (BDW20070 - sold separately) so that you can safely handle the rope and hook.

The removable clevis hook is constructed of high-strength forged alloy steel that is heavy duty and rust resistant. It has a spring-loaded safety latch for quick fastening and removal. The hook attaches to the steel thimble on the end of the synthetic rope.
This winch includes a CNC machine billet aluminum hawse fairlead that is designed to be used with synthetic rope. It helps guide the rope as it's winding in and out, and it has a rounded hole to help prevent wear. The 3/4" thick fairlead has a black anodized finish that resists corrosion, and it installs with zinc-plated hardware.
Note: The hawse fairlead does not mount directly to the winch - it typically mounts to the included channel or to tabs on a custom mounting plate (sold separately). Bulldog Winch mounting plates - as well as most other aftermarket mounts - include these tabs.
The winch is constructed of strong, durable materials that are able to withstand any weather condition or terrain. The motor and gearbox unit is sealed to keep water out, and it's made of corrosion-resistant powder coated steel.
To install the winch on the front of your vehicle you will need a suitable mounting location. The winch and fairlead may be bolted to the included mounting channel. This mounting channel is a basic L-channel and may not be compatible with your ATV. In most cases you will need to bolt a custom mounting plate (sold separately) to the front framework of your ATV in order to mount the winch and fairlead.
The power unit will typically mount under the front cover or hood near the battery. You will need to drill 2 small holes in the mounting surface to secure the unit with the included hardware. Connect the 18" leads to your vehicle's battery and run the 6' leads to the winch terminals. Any excess wiring can be neatly tucked around the engine and secured with zip ties (not included).
You can mount the rocker switch on either handlebar but it's typically mounted near the brake on the handlebar opposite the throttle. This allows you to control the winch and accelerate the ATV at the same time. It includes mounting hardware and an 8' wiring harnesss that connects to the contactor with built-in quick connects.
| Layers of Rope | Capacity (lbs) | Total Rope on Drum (ft) |
|---|---|---|
| 1st Layer | 2,000 | 6-1/2 |
| 2nd Layer | 1,630 | 14 |
| 3rd Layer | 1,380 | 23-1/2 |
| 4th Layer | 1,190 | 35 |
| 5th Layer | 1,050 | 40 |
The line pull capacity of your winch is determined by the maximum load your winch can pull with a single layer of rope on the drum. As more layers of rope are wound onto the drum, pulling the same load requires more force, leading to a loss in winching power. With a 2nd layer of rope around the drum, your line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 14 percent. With 3 layers on the drum, the line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 23 percent, and with 4 layers on the drum it is reduced by approximately 35 percent.
Note: It is recommended that you begin any line pull with a minimum of 5 wraps and a maximum of 2 layers of rope on the drum.
Increase the pulling capacity of your winch by doubling up the rope with a pulley block (BDW20023 - sold separately). Secure the pulley block to a tree saver strap (BDW20051 - sold separately) with a bow shackle (BDW20006 - sold separately) to provide a strong anchor for your double-line pull. Or use the Bulldog Winch 7-piece rigging kit (BDW20034 - sold separately) that includes everything you need for heavy-duty recovery. Using double-line operation will approximately double your winch's pulling capacity.

Today we're taking a look at the Bulldog winch Powersports series ATV winch and the Powersports ATV recovery winch is designed for recreation and light duty work applications. This is perfect for a 250 to 350 CC sport quad 4x4, two wheel drive ATVs, and snowmobiles. It's recommended for ATVs or units with the maximum gross vehicle weight of up to 1,000 pounds. It features a 1 horsepower permanent magnet motor which delivers fast and safe line pooling. The motor is lighter and uses less current than a series one motor. And it is sealed when it comes to the motor and gear box, so that keeps water out and prevents internal corrosion from taking place.
It has the sealed power unit with dual relays to transmit power from the vehicle batter to the winch motor. It mounts with the included hardware under your ATVs front cover or hood. Now the winch itself features a dynamic brake which holds the load while minimizing winch creeping. It's an all steel single-staged planetary gear train, which provides increased drum speed when compared to traditional worm drives. And it comes with a rocker switch located right here. This lets your control the winch from the seat of your ATV, so it's got plenty of wire in there and you can mount it to the handlebars with the included handlebar mount kit.It also offers a free spooling clutch located right here, so you pull this out and it moves it to free spool mode.
So that's going to insure fast route payout and reduced wear on the motor. It comes with a 40 foot long synthetic rope, very strong and durable. It's also light weight and safer to handle when compared to a steel cable. And then it comes with a steel hook with the safety latch mechanism to prevent accidental disconnecting. It comes with the pin and clip, so it attaches to the end of the synthetic rope.
It's also got the metal plate in here so that's going to prevent the hook as it rotates from doing any type of damage to the rope itself. The hawse fairlead is included. This is a heavy duty CNC machine billet aluminum Hawse fairlead, has the rounded design to it which helps prevent friction damage to the rope. And it has a black anodized finish to resist rust and corrosion. It also comes with an universal mount plate and hardware, so that's included for winch and fairlead mounting. Now you may need a custom mounting plate which is sold separately.
That may be required to mount the winch and fairlead to your specific ATV. You can check out options at eTrader.com.We're looking at a durable black powder coated steel body and motor to resist rust and corrosion. The rated line pool for this unit with a single layer of synthetic rope around the drum is 2,000 pounds. That's the static load. Motor is a 12-volt DC motor. Line pool is zero pounds. Power drill is 8 amps. Line speed is 10.5 feet/minute. Line pool at 2,000 pounds, which is max capacity. Power drill is 120 amps with a line speed of 2.9 feet/minute. Gear ratio is 153:1. The dimensions of the drum, that's an 1 1/4" diameter drum, measures 2 13/16" long. And the winch itself is about 11 3/16" long by about 4 5/16" wide that's front to back, by about 4 1/8" tall top to bottom.Again, it comes with everything laid out here on the table, so you get the wench, you get the rope, you get the hook, you get the rocker switch with all the necessary wiring, universal mount plate, hawse fairlead, all the necessary hardware for the installation, handlebar mount, and then you get the control box with the included wiring on there. Everything has quick connect design to it so you have your connectors already installed, ring terminals already installed for easy connecting to the winch. Connection posts as well as to the battery posts. That's going to do it for today's look at the Bulldog winch Powersports series ATV winch.
