Features to know about

Get a Head Start on Freezing Mornings

After your vehicle sits outside overnight in subzero weather, a cold engine can be reluctant to start. This 400-watt Zerostart heater warms the coolant inside your engine block before you turn the key. That preheating makes cold starts easier on the engine and gets it closer to operating temperature before you head out, so you can spend less time waiting for it to warm up.

Install It in the Correct Engine Opening

This heater has a 36 mm threaded connection that screws into the designated opening in your engine block. Although it's categorized as frost-plug style, it doesn't press into a core-plug hole or slide into a dry cartridge cavity. Fit and installation location depend on your specific engine, so check the vehicle fit information and the applicable manufacturer installation guide found following the Specs section before you start.

Installation involves draining the coolant and removing the specified threaded plug. Follow the instructions for sealing and tightening the heater, then refill the cooling system, check for leaks, and remove trapped air before plugging it in. The element must be surrounded by coolant whenever power is applied.

Work Preheating into Your Winter Routine

The included 5' silicone cord connects the heater to a standard 120V outlet and can be detached if it needs replacing. Route it toward an accessible spot at the front of your vehicle, securing it away from hot surfaces and moving parts. Phillips & Temro recommends plugging in a block heater at least 3 to 4 hours before departure. Also, remember to unplug it before starting the engine.

Know Who Makes Your Zerostart Heater

Zerostart is a Phillips & Temro brand. You might recognize that manufacturer from original-equipment engine-heating applications even if the Zerostart name is new to you. Phillips & Temro develops block heaters for individual engine applications, so there's more behind the brand than an unfamiliar name on the box.

Important Notes:

1. Coolant and Installation

Use a 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol antifreeze and water. Never use straight antifreeze or a mixture containing more than 65% antifreeze, as this can shorten the heating element's life. Avoid stop-leak additives in the cooling system. Follow the installation instructions for the correct sealing and tightening procedure; overtightening can damage the threads or compromise the seal.

2. Testing Your Heater

Never plug in the heater before installation to see if it works. Without coolant around the element, it can overheat and cause serious burns. Instead, with the heater disconnected from power, use a multimeter to check resistance across the heater pins. The manufacturer's general testing guidance specifies a reading between 5 and 100 ohms.

3. Using Your Heater Safely

Make sure the element is fully submerged in coolant and any trapped air has been removed before plugging it in. Unplug the heater before starting your engine. Running the engine with the heater plugged in can create an air pocket around the element, causing it to overheat and fail prematurely.

4. Disconnecting the Power Cord

When disconnecting your extension cord from the heater cord, firmly grasp each plug and pull them apart. Never pull or yank on the cords themselves. That can damage the connections and potentially cause an electrical short.

Video Transcript for Review of Zerostart Vehicle Heaters - Custom Fit Frost Plug Style Engine Block Heater - ZE97KR

Hi, everybody, Andy here with etrailer. Let's take a quick look at the Zerostart Custom-Fit Frost Plug Style Engine Block Heater. Now, this is designed to make cold weather starts really a non-issue for you. This is going to prewarm your engine so when you turn the key, even in those freezing temperatures, this is going to help your engine start smoothly instead of struggling. Now, this is not just about convenience. This is going to help warm things up ahead of time, and that's going to, in turn, help reduce wear and tear and the strain that normally happens during cold, dry starts.

And of course, that can be very hard on your engine over time. This is made specifically for your vehicle's engine so you don't have to guess whether this is going to fit or work properly. So, because this is custom-fit, please use our Vehicle Fit Guide here at etrailer. Enter the year, make and model of your vehicle, and answer any other questions that it might have for you, and our Fit Guide will confirm that this works for you. This is going to work with H4, H6 and I4 engines.

So, again, do use our Vehicle Fit Guide to confirm fitment, and if this isn't going to work for you, our Fit Guide will point out another item that will work for you. Installation and compatibility are gonna be straightforward and in terms of performance, it's going to give you a steady 400 watts of heating power at 120 volts, and that's gonna help keep the coolant warm and help the engine stay at a more startup-friendly temperature. The cord is built to last as well, and it's removable, so as you can see here, you're gonna be able to unplug it from the heater. So, that's good because in case this plug or this cord rather gets damaged, you're not gonna have to replace the entire heater. You can just replace the cord, and then you'll be good to go.

Another thing that I like is there is a cap for the outlet plug here, so when it's not in use, the cap is going to protect those prongs, so that's a nice addition. I don't see that on a lot of other engine block heaters. So, overall, this is gonna be a practical upgrade if you deal with cold weather and you want easier starts, less engine wear, and a setup that's designed specifically for the engine of your vehicle. If you happen to have any other questions, whether it's about this heater or any other products that we have here at etrailer, don't hesitate to reach out. We wanna make sure that you have exactly what you need.

Well, again, my name is Andy, thank you for joining me.
