Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area, on the driver's side and passenger's side. You will have to remove the floor coverings and some interior paneling to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - HM11142364 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a look at the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with the 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector. Now, this is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 2014 and newer Mitsubishi Mirage. On a custom fit part, I always like to recommend for you to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle, and it will show you if this will work for your application. Now this part will provide the 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer's signal lights. It is compatible with five-pole, six-pole, and seven-pole adapters that we do sell separately on our website. This does connect very quickly and easily.

Basically, you just locate your connection points, which are in the rear cargo area; plug in these connectors one on each side, one on the driver side, one on the passenger side; you have a white wire here that'll need to be grounded, and then you'll have a red power wire. This power wire is what will run to the front of the vehicle. Now this does include this tail light converter, which is this black box, here. This is to ensure that your vehicle's wiring will match that of your trailer, and it is a powered module. What that means is, this powered wire that goes to your battery connects directly to the battery. That's to avoid overloading your vehicle's electrical system. They do use protective connection terminals when you plug these in on all your connections to help resist corrosion.

Also, what you notice on the 4-way, it does come with this nice dust cover for the 4-way so when you're not plugged into a trailer, you can just put this on. That will protect those terminals from any damage or from the elements. It also has a nice packet of terminal grease, or dielectric grease. What that's used for is, any type of electrical connection you make, you do want to put some of that grease on to help resist corrosion. The maximum amperage on this harness - the stop and turn light circuits is 4.2 amps per circuit, on the tail light circuit it's 7.5 amps total. It does come with everything shown here on the table.Just quickly, how this all goes together - what you again would do is go to the rear cargo area and gain access behind your tail lights on each side.

What you'll want to do is start on the driver side. You'll have this connector that has the yellow and red wire in it. That's for the driver side. Plug this into the connectors on that side. Then what you'll do is take the other connector here and has the green wire, and it's a length of green wire. That's for the passenger side, so this will run all the way over to the passenger side.

Plug that in. After those are all plugged in . now your converter box here, you do want to attach that to a flat surface so it doesn't bounce around. They do give you some extra cable ties to attach it down with. Then you have your two wires - your white wire and your red wire. Now the white wire is a ground, so it has an eyelet on it. You do want to connect that to a good, clean ground, if there's one nearby. If not, they do include a grounding screw to make your own ground. Then the red wire with the butt connector is your power wire. That we need to run to your vehicle's battery at the front of the vehicle, so they do give you this length of wire to do that.So you just connect one end to that length of wire, run it all the way up to the front, and you don't want to connect this to the battery directly, you want to run it through this in-line fuse holder. So click the other end to the other end to the butt connector on one side of the in-line fuse holder, the other side, you'll notice the wire has an eyelet on it that connects to the battery. Pop open the fuse holder, take the included 15 amp fuse, install it into your fuse holder, put your cap back on, and your harness will be all ready to go.Again, they do also give you some extra cable ties to take up any slack in the wiring. That should do it for the review on the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with the 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector.
