Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

T-One Connection Location Points Behind Tail Lights

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - HM11142304 Review

Today we're going to review part number HM11142304. This is the Hopkins plug-in vehicle-specific wiring harness with the 4-pole trailer connector. This is a custom fit part number. It is designed to fit the Ram ProMaster starting in 2014. Now this plug-in wiring harness will provide a no hassle, quick and easy way to install a 4-pole connector on your tow vehicle. With this 4-pole connector installed on the vehicle you can plug this into the 4-pole on your trailer and provide power for the lights on your trailer. This is a plug-in custom wiring kit which will utilize these pre-wired factory OEM connectors for water-tight protection, guaranteed fit, and an easy installation with the plug-in connectors.

This connectors here will connect to the rear of your vehicle's taillights. There's no cutting or splicing required. The 4-pole here, this 4-pole flat trailer connector, it does use the corrosion resistant terminals and it has this nice rubber dust cap that when you're not using it you can just pop it over there and you can protect it even more. Everything shown here on the table is included in this part number. Comes with this powered converter module with all the wires attached to it. Comes with this length of 14-gauge wire to connect to your vehicle's battery.

Comes with this fuse assembly that you'll want to put between the power wire and the battery to protect it. It even has the 15-amp fuse that goes in there. Comes with this grounding screw that would be used to ground the white wire on your module. Comes with some cable ties that you might want to use to take up any excess slack of this wire when you run it from the back to the front of your vehicle. Comes even with this grease packet that's just some dielectric grease that you'll want to put on the 4-pole when you connect it to the 4-pole on your trailer. Now basically this powered converter module right here will adapt your vehicle's wiring system to work with the trailer.

It will safeguard the vehicle's wiring system by pulling power for the trailer lights directly from your vehicle's battery, not through the existing wires in your factory wiring harness on your vehicle. Basically what you'll do is take this assembly and go to the rear of the vehicle. These connectors will attach to the back of your vehicle's taillight. What you'll do is unhook the connectors in your taillights, and then plug these in line to it to connect to it. Now what you'll want to do is you'll see there's two sets, one for each taillight. The set with the yellow wire right here, this is for the driver side.

You'll run this to the back of the driver's taillights, unplug it, plug these in. Then this other set of connectors which is a single green wire, this will go across the car to the passenger side. Again, these connectors would plug into the back of the passenger's taillight. Then you'll have two other wires here that need to be connected. You'll have a white wire and it will have an eyelet on the end. This is what you want to use as the ground wire. If there's a nearby screw that you can attach this to and get a good clean ground you'll want to do that. If not, they include this grounding screw that you can drill a hole and put in your own ground connector. Now the other wire is this red wire with the butt connector on it. This is the wire that will run to your vehicle's battery to supply the power to this module. What you'll do with this is take your extra length of this 14-gauge wire, take one end, connect it to there, run this wire from the back of your car all the way to the front. Then the end of the wire that you'll run to the front, you'll connect to this fuse assembly to the butt connector. Then the other side of this fuse assembly, it has a wire with the eyelet on it; this will connect to your battery. Then what you'll want to do before you use it: take your 15-amp included fuse, pop it into the fuse holder, put the cap over it, and then your system would be ready to go and it's protected by that 15-amp fuse. Now on this module itself, it does have a maximum amperage. The stop and turn lights can be 3 amps per circuit max, and the taillights would be 6 amps. that should do it for the review on part number HM11142304, the Hopkins plug-in vehicle-specific wiring harness with the 4-pole trailer connector. .
