Hi Robert,

Yes, using a hitch extender will typically reduce the capacity of the trailer hitch by at least 50% because you're now leveraging the weight further out. The only time you won't see this is with a TorkLift SuperHitch and SuperTruss Extender, but these are for heavy duty truck applications and have bracing to accommodate the weight being further out.

The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76171 you were looking at is for a Honda Odyssey so I'll assume that's what you have, which would rule out you going with a TorkLift hitch. What exactly are you trying to do? I can possibly find a better solution for you.

pulling a pontoon about 2300 GTW, Can't get in water with current standard ball without submerging muffler and almost fender. Thought an extender would get the 20 ft pontoon, 26 ft trailer in far enough.

@RobertA You can switch to a longer ball mount like the Hidden Hitch # 80232. Since it's one piece instead of an extension and then a ball mount it doesn't have the same stipulations. This ball mount has a 15-3/4" long measurement from center of hitch pin hole to center of hitch ball hole, which should be enough to keep your muffler out of the water. That being said, you are still leveraging the weight further back so you'll likely see a bit more sag. Your boat doesn't weigh that much so it might not be too significant of difference, but I would just take a look at home before going out on a trip to see if some suspension enhancement is needed. If so, some Timbren's # T26FR (2018 - 2024 Honda Odyssey) might be just what you need. If you go with the Hidden Hitch # 80232 and need a hitch ball then you can use one of the following depending on the ball size of your trailer's coupler: 1-7/8" Hitch Ball # C40002 2" Hitch Ball # 40038 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # 63847
