Video Transcript for 2-5/16" Hitch Ball Review

Today we'll be taking a look at part number 63847. This is the Tow Ready hitch ball with the of 2 5/16 inch diameter and a medium shank, rated at 7500 pounds. The diameter of our shank is right at an inch, and the length of our shank is 2 1/8 long. This is going to fit ball mounts with a thickness of 3/8 of an inch to 7/8 of an inch. It has this nice strong finish which is going to help it stand up against the elements, and again it's rated at 7500 pounds. We'll go ahead and show you how it is installs. What you do is you take your ball mount and take your ball.

Slide it through the hole. Put on the lock washer and secure it with the knot. Now, you will want it to be sure to go and twerk it down to the manufacturer's recommendations. Once we would have that finger tight, what you do is you take your inch, secure it here at the holds. Take another inch and twerk it down to the specifications from the manufacturer.

Now, it's going to complete today's review of part number 63847, the hitch ball from Tow Ready. .

etrailer.com has the best customer service I have had the pleasure to work with in a very long time. Lets face it, everyone makes mistakes, but how you deal with those mistakes is what makes the difference. I have dealt with companies that did not take responsibility for their mistakes and it wound up costing me time and money. etrailer on the other hand quickly admitted their mistake and worked to correct the error with as little impact to me, the customer, as possible. I had a specific problem I was trying to address and I had been on several different sites looking for a solution. I was not finding what I needed. I saw some thing that may have worked for me on the etrailer site, but I needed more information then was available on their web site. So I called and got a Customer Service rep named Mike almost immediately. Mike took his time and answered my questions, and when it looked like the item I was looking at would not work for me, he looked though their inventory and found the exact item I needed to solve my problem. When I looked up the part # on the web, to view the part and see if it was what I was looking for, I found it was well documented and even had the one dimension that I needed to verify whether or not it would work for me, when most other sites did not provide that information. It was a great experience and I finally found what I needed. Thanks Mike! Then when my part arrived, I was impressed with the packaging. This heavy metal stuff was packaged better then a lot of fragile stuff I have received from other companies. I opened the package I found they had accidentally shipped one wrong part. The part number on the part did not match my order but it was basically the same part, but a slightly different size for the shank ( I can see where this would have been an easy mistake to make). I called and again had a great experience with their customer service (Katie). She answered the phone quickly and politely and when I explained that I got the wrong part, she apologized for the error and offered to make it right. They would send the correct part along with a prepaid label to return the wrong one. I am very pleased with all my dealings with etrailer and I would definitely recommend them to anyone. The ball mount and ball I got solved my problem by providing something I was not able to locate elsewhere, and the prices were good as well.

I am very satisfied with my purchases. They continue to perform as needed.

by:

It's a hitch ball. If you are checking reviews for hitch balls I'm guessing you have had something catastrophic happen in your past. This did not have any such problems.

by:

I was so impressed with how easy it was to make the purchase of my trailer hitch and wiring kit, and it was so much cheaper than my local trailer hitch people were charging. The YouTube videos made the attachment process much easier. Because I was nervous about whether or not I was ordering all the right parts online, I called eTrailer, and a nice person went through my order with me. Turns out the ball I bought was 2" and I should have bought a 1-7/8 ball. That was really my fault, but I wish the sales clerk had mentioned I needed to check that. Still, for an absolute novice at this kind of stuff, the entire experience was great, and I can wholeheartedly recommend eTrailer to any other novices out there who want to add a hitch to their vehicles!

by:

My trailer has cut through some of the chrome but the ball is holding up very well. We do not grease this one as we have with some in the past due to pulling it out and carrying it around a lot as we switch out sizes of hitches in the receiver for different trailers. Using a 10K hydraulic trailer on this ball and there are no signs of real wear on the ball itself.

by:

Recommendation by etrailer was perfect.
Easy
to install
Trailer pulls with no sway, wandering
Or porpoising.

Take the recommendation and go with it.
They know what they are doing.

Great

by:

I recently ordered a new Curt receiver hitch, ball, and a 4 inch drop receiver to put on a 2001 Gmc Sierra 1500. The truck had an old hitch on it for the last 10 years and couldn`t even get the receiver out. It had a closed end which always got rusted up so I went for a new receiver hitch. The worst part was getting the old hitch off. The new one bolted right up perfectly and shipping was a day earlier than expected. Great company, great service, great price, need I say anymore. If you need trailer hitch parts this is the place to go.

by:

I just bought a new trailer that is 7 feet longer than my last and heavier and I now have a truck instead of an SUV so I needed to get a new weight distribution hinge with sway control. etrailer had all the best brands at the best price and delivery was fast. Unfortunately that's all I can comment on so far. I'm not picking up the new trailer till mid April, so I can't comment on how well it works or show pictures. I'll update later.

by:

After purchasing a trailer hitch for my Nissan Xterra, I found finding the right ball at local shops difficult. I returned to etrailer's site, found the balls and hitch pin I needed, and received everything in just five days.

by:

Ordering on line was a breeze -- everything was explained in the descriptions and the photos were clear. I received the product quickly and I appreciated the post-sale communication to let me know the status of my order. I was impressed by the smooth welds and the finish on both the ball and the mount. I expect they will give me many years of care-free use. Thanks!
PS No photos yet -- we pick up our trailer next week and I'll snap a few then and get one off to you!

by:

when I needed to supply my Tow Trucks with hitch balls I turned to etrailer because locally I could not get this price and the amount I needed in a timely fashion.

by:

All three items were great I especially The locking pin.

by:

Well made and the finish is very nice. The threads are smooth and there are wrench flats on the ball side, makes tightening the nut easier. It should be noted that the load rating on this one is 7500 lbs, due to the one inch shank. A good value at Etrailer.

by:

This ball fit perfectly on the hitch. The camper hooks up to it very easily.

by:

Fit as described, put on my brand new drop hitch!

by:

Ok it’s a trailer ball, as described, does what it was supposed to
Fast shipping great customer service

by:

ALL TRAILER BALLS PERFORMED GREAT AS US UAL

by:

Though the trailer ball was made in China, it appears to be very well manufactured.

by:

This is a great quality trailer ball. Exactly what I needed. Thanks!

by:

Thank you for handling/completing this order

by:

This thing is beautiful hunk of metal and it'll do fantastic job.

  • Reese Pole Tongue Adapter Compatibility With Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System
The Reese Pole-Tongue Adapter for Weight Distribution Systems - 14,000 lbs GTW, 1,400 lbs TW # RP58393 requires positioning on trailer tongue approximately 29 inches back from hitch ball. The Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control # RP66558 requires bracket positioning 25-32 inches back from center of coupler, so they will be compatible. You will need a hitch ball with your weight distribution system. I recommend # 63845 for a 2 inch ball or # 63847 for a 2-5/16...

  • Is Weight Distribution System Maximum Weight Or Minimum Weight Better?
You definitely don't want to be at the constant max capacity of a system. You want to be within the middle of the range when fully loaded for an ideal set-up. If you think your total tongue weight of your loaded trailer tongue along with any cargo behind the rear axle of your 2016 Honda Odyssey will be around the 400lb capacity of the # 66557, then I highly recommend you move to a larger system with the # RP66558 which has a range of 400-600 lbs total tongue weight. You will need a hitch...

  • Recommended 2 Inch Ball Mount With 1 Inch Rise
For a 2 inch ball mount that offers a 1 inch rise/2 inch drop and a 12K capacity, I'd recommend the Draw-Tite # 4284. For a 2-5/16 inch ball, use # 19286 which also has a 12K capacity. If you don't need that much capacity, go for the Curt # C45030 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball, use # 63847. This combination would have a 7500 lb maximum capacity. For either setup, you'd also need a # PC3 hitch in.

For your fixed ball mount with at 4 to 4-3/4 inch rise, I recommend the Curt Dual Length Ball Mount for 2" Hitches - 4-1/2" Rise, 5-3/4" Drop - 7,500 lbs # C45240. This ball mount will also need a hitch ball like # 63845 for a 2 inch option or # 63847 for a 2-5/16 inch option. I've linked a page to your option for 7500 lbs with that 4 inch or more rise.

  • Recommended Extended Ball Mount for a Boat Trailer
Sounds like you need an extended ball mount. The Hidden Hitch Ball Mount item # 80232 you were looking at would definitely give you plenty of turning clearance. It measures 15-3/4" from center of hitch pin hole to center of ball hole and has a 6,000 lbs capacity. Depending on your coupler size you will either need a 2" Hitch Ball item # 63845 or a 2-5/16" hitch ball item # 63847.

  • Ball Mount for with More than 11 Inches of Rise to Tow Trailer Level with 2012 Toyota Sienna
What I recommend is to use Convert-A-Ball cushioned ball mount # AMSC12 and then add a high rise ball. The ball mount takes a ball with a 1 inch diameter shank. If the trailer coupler takes a 2 inch ball use high rise ball # C40034. If you need a 2-5/16 inch ball there isn't a high rise version that would fit so you would need to use a regular ball # 63847. If the coupler does take a 2 inch ball then # AMSC12 with # C40034 will provide you with approximately 12-3/4 inches rise and you...

The ball mount is rated for up to 5,000 lbs n the drop position so you simply need to use a hitch ball rated for 3,750 lbs or more. I recommend the 2 inch ball # 63845 or the 2-5/16 inch ball # 63847 depending on which matches your coupler. Both are rated for 7,500 lbs so they will work well. The Convert-A-Ball Ball Mount...

I reached out to Gen-Y, who told me the thickness is approximately 1/2" for the Gen-Y Glyder Shock Absorbing Ball Mount for 2" Hitches - 2" Drop - 7K # 325-GH-12001 and the 6" Drop # 325-GH-12005. Along with that, the platform has a 1 inch diameter hole, so for a hitch ball you will need 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # 63847 or 2" Hitch Ball # 40038. It does not come with a hitch pin or lock, so I highly recommend adding a lock, the Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock for 2" Hitches # e98880.

I'll start off with the ball mount, and as someone who also has a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, a ball mount with a longer shank like the # D-26 will do the job-and honestly, in most cases unless the trailer has jack mounted close to the front of the frame a standard ball mount will work just fine. The # D-26 uses a hitch ball with a 1" diameter, so you'll want to choose a hitch ball that matches the coupler size on the trailer- if you've got a 2-5/16" coupler the # 63847 would be a good hitch...
