Should I Get a Roof Rack or Cargo Basket for My 2023 Lexus GX 460 (Flush Rails)

Question:

Good afternoon. I have a 2023 Lexus GX460 with the factory low-profile roof rails. I am reluctant to remove / replace the factory rails with a backbone but would consider it if enough advantages. Would like to mount a platform, or basket, or pod - undecided. Can I keep the low profile rails and attach a system that would allow platform / basket options which would not be limited to light loads? What would you suggest? Thank you.

Hey Henry,

The best option for you is the Yakima SkyLine Roof Rack # Y59TB because it mounts to your 2023 Lexus GX 460 without you needing to take the OEM flush rails off. It also gives you the ability to carry a wide variety of accessories, think platform/basket/box, whereas going with a platform can be pretty limiting since you either have to hope there is an adapter for something you want to use, or you're stuck with what the manufacturer made for the platform.

Yakima rates this system as being able to handle 165 lbs which is just under what Lexus lists as the max capacity for your roof (176 lbs according to page 179 of the online manual). I think this has to do with a luggage carrier directly from them though so being at the 165 lb weight rating is a good thing, especially since it's been the industry standard for a while and you know you won't be overloading your roof.

I'm not sure what kind of carrying system you're wanting, but I'm kind of partial to the Yakima CBX Rooftop Cargo Box # Y86FR. Yakima really outdid themselves with this box with the upgraded mounting system and handles on either side of the box to open it up.

I'm linking a video where you can see Evangeline go over the ins and outs of this box, but if you end up wanting to go with something else please let me know and I'll be more than happy to make a different recommendation for you!
