Recommended Tire Replacement for 155/80R13 Tire on a Shorelander Boat Trailer

Question:

I have an older Shorelandr boat trailer that is in need of new tires. Current tires, SR155/80R13, are now obsolete. Viable options: 530x12 and 145/80R12 D/E? What are the pros/cons of each? Thanks.

Helpful Expert Reply:

I recommend the 145/80-12 over the 5.30-12 simply because the it comes in a Radial construction while the 5.30-12 is only available in a Bias construction. Either one can be used for a boat trailer, but Radial is overall better for highway use which is why I recommend going that route.

For a 4 on 4" bolt pattern I recommend the part # AM31208HWT which comes with an aluminum wheel but if you have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern the galvanized wheel kit # AM31202.

I'm linking some review videos of each tire/wheel combo for your reference.

Jon, As I get closer to taking action on tires, I have more questions. I like your recommendation. Would you suggest I purchase the 145/80-12 radial tires pre-mounted or have a local station mount/balance on some existing 12 inch rims with bias tires that I have (new in 2017)? Or is that strictly a financial decision? I have the 5x4.5 pattern. Thanks

@Jim It's purely a financial decision. If you choose to keep your current wheels and have a shop mount the tires then you'll just need the Kenda Karrier S-Trail # AM10130 instead of the whole tire and wheel combination.
